Oldest football club Sheffield FC wants EU backing

Sheffield FC was founded in 1857, six years before the FA and three decades before the Football League.
Members helped devise the rules of the game, inventing the corner kick, throw-in and crossbar.
Now they are hoping to play a blinder in a three-month consultation period with the EU’s Trade Marks Office in Alicante. Barring own-goals they should be over the moon next summer when they are granted copyright protection for their crest and motto – The World’s First Football Club.
