I wonder if anyone recalls an Arc De Triumph type structure that spanned West Street, somewhere around the Bee Hive pub. I saw an old photo of this with the trams going underneath the main structure and the pedestrians having a smaller arch either side of the road. I asked my mother who is Sheffield born and bred , yet she can offer no ideas. I would love to know why it was built and moreso why it was removed.

I can remember seeing a similar photo - I think it was erected temporarily to celebrate Queen Victoria's jubilee or something.

I am not certain, but the caption udnerneath said that it was then dismantled and moved to one of the parks?

Always thought that the Arch in question was jusr down from the Town Hall in Pinstone Street.

Could it be this one? (http://tinyurl.com/dh6ka) ...erected for the visit of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, 12 July 1905. [there were similar arches for Victoria's visit].

from the Local Register (digest of local newspapers):

12 July
King and Queen visit Sheffield. His majesty opens new University, presents new colours to the 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and unveils a memorial in the Parish Churchyard to the men of the York and Lancaster Regiment who fell in South Africa during the Boer War. Afterwards their Majesties visit Vickers, Sons, and Maxim's works, where they witness the rolling of an armour plate, the tapping of a steel furnace, and inspect finished guns. Their Majesties lunch with the Lord Mayor in the Town Hall, receive addresses from public bodies in the city, and copies of Mr R.E. Leader's new history of the Cutlers' Company. Ten miles of loyal subjects cheer the King and Queen, and the whole proceedings pass off with gratifying success. [plus several honours conferred]

...in that photo, the decorators with the advertisement on the gable is 79 West St, and the turning to the left just before it is Rockingham Lane. So, a little bit closer to town than the Beehive.

Thanks for pointing to the Pictures Sheffield site - I had forgotten about that. The arch pictures which I remembered were there (search for 'victoria_queen') - now I come to see them it was not the one over West Street but the Barkers Pool one I recall.

I am still sure that one of these was dragged off and used somewhere else though

I've always assumed that those arches were not very substantial. The one in the picture appears to have 'guy ropes' attached to it. so it may only be made of wood and canvas ?!

I think I may be getting these mixed up with an Arch that was built in London for some major Royal Event - that was moved to Euston Station and stood at the entrance for many years until the station was revamped in the 70's

All that been said I am fairly certain that in one of the Sheffield parks is some monument etc. that originally was used somewhere and then moved.

This (http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=9870) seems to be Victoria's arch from 1890.

"Queen Victoria's visit to Sheffield showing decorative arch at junction of Broad Street and South Street, Park, photographed from South Street looking towards Broad Street. Premises in background include Broad Street Cafe "

Oops ! - and this (http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=9871) the one in Barker's Pool...

and Commercial Street (http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=9869)

and Pinstone Street (http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=9868)

and Blonk Street (http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=9867)

and
Victoria Station (http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=7273)

Couldn't we have these back again? They look a lot better than what's there now...

Blimey, they look ridiculous. Did the Queen enjoy driving through an amateur theatrical group's stage set do you think?
