View Full Version : Should Christmas tv ads be banned until 21st Dec or so? 1960boy 19-10-2009, 23:12 I don't know about you lot but i can see me being a nervous wreck by the time christmas comes around! Nataliie 19-10-2009, 23:13 Nooooooo, I love the Christmas ads, especially the Coca-Cola one :D KTHFB 19-10-2009, 23:41 I'd say ban it until around the 28th... Nataliie 19-10-2009, 23:43 I'd say ban it until around the 28th... You're all so boring :hihi:. Throw a bit of tinsel about and sing some Christmas Carols. :D Vague_Boy 19-10-2009, 23:49 Thank goodness I don't have a TV. Christmas is OK but when the build-up lasts for months, when it finally arrives one is forced to quote Peggy Lee, "is that all there is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Is_That_All_There_Is%3F)"? dw82 20-10-2009, 10:15 So who would be responsible for having them banned, then? Just out of interest. 1960boy 20-10-2009, 10:28 Government could do something to restrict ads i'm sure. decaff 20-10-2009, 10:41 Not sure about the 21st but they should at least be banned until december. dw82 20-10-2009, 11:23 Government could do something to restrict ads i'm sure. Ok, that's a start - but on what grounds? That they annoy you is not a good enough reason to get them banned! Companies only start showing Christmas ads so early because the market is so competitive these days, and because we as consumers obviously respond positively to them. Figures will show that enough people are looking at buying Christmas stuff already to make it worth a company's while to start their campaign. Tess 20-10-2009, 12:13 No definately not - i'm excited already! Found myself singing "all I want for Christmas is you" this morning - bring it on! 1960boy 20-10-2009, 12:16 They do annoy me,especially from as earlier as October, i don't feel Chrismassy until a few days before and i do feel the early ads desensitize me to the festive period. PuressenceUK 20-10-2009, 12:19 No I don't agree with the OP at all. The should be banned until the 24th of December Bah Humbug medusa 20-10-2009, 12:54 I feel really sorry for people who work in shops, salons and the like and who have to endure the same Christmas soundtrack all the way from November to Christmas. I wouldn't be at all surprised if their feelings about Christmas are murderous- I'm sure that mine would be the same if I was force fed the jollity and festiveness too. The jolly soundtrack is one of the reasons that I do my damnedest to avoid shops in the run up to Christmas (along with the crowds, all the things that you've gone to buy being out of stock etc). boutiquechoc 21-10-2009, 08:51 I think Christmas mass advertising should not be allowed air time until around 1-5 Dec. No need for adverts in Oct. It is wrong! The pressure some people get under because of all the fuss is ridiculous. small_hall 21-10-2009, 08:55 no i love christmas ads. I always get a fluttery feeling the first time the coca cola advert comes on :hihi: I do think that they should only come on the 1st december though. I have to admit come christmas eve i am normally sick to tghe back teeth of them in particular the boots one  Billy Casper 21-10-2009, 10:03 Have to agree to a certain extent, I love chrimbo, but ads in October?? No thanks! daftlad 21-10-2009, 10:50 yes. keep christmas in december Lexi 22-10-2009, 09:44 I had a temp job working the Christmas shifts in a retail place and over and over again we would hear the same CD day after day and it really really grated on you!! I love Christmas, I love the whole deal of buying presents and getting ready to be with the family but I feel it's being brought on far too early this year, I was expecting it to all start next month but I was obviously wrong!! I can see why they do start early though, It's like 2 pay days til christmas really so people will be starting soon and every year I see people saying "I'm going to start christmas shopping earlier this year" so I guess they ads are targetting these people. I have to admit though, If I had the money I would of started by now, I'm due to start night work soon so being out in the day with the rush of christmas shoppers isn't something I'm going to be looking forwards to!! debsx23 26-10-2009, 10:11 No I cant wait to see the xmas ads they should be on earlier not later! Plain Talker 26-10-2009, 11:09 There'd be a need to ban most children's programming, too, as the programmes are little more than twenty-five/ thirty- minute advertisements for the products.(think "Thundercats", think "He man", think "Yu-Gi Oh!" think "Pokemon" and "Digimon", thin "Transformers" think those karate players with the coloured suits, etc, etc, etc, ad infinitum. Tess 26-10-2009, 11:18 Only 9 Weeks and 4 Days to go people! *runs* CashBack13 23-11-2009, 19:48 I don't know about you lot but i can see me being a nervous wreck by the time christmas comes around! BIG YES! Along with anything else that comes out far too early regarding Xmas. It's 1 day and people shove it down your throat for 2 months in advance! Vague_Boy 23-11-2009, 20:15 It's 1 day and people shove it down your throat for 2 months in advance! Exactly. And judging by the increase in divorce applications in January (40% up apparently (http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/tim-lott-santa-claus--the-new-superhero-of-the-dysfunctional-family-christmas-577263.html)), it's often not even a particularly joyful day for many. It seems to be an excuse for the following: (a) Excessive alcohol consumption. (b) Excessive gluttony. (c) Having to spend time with relatives you avoid the rest of the year. (d) Getting into unmanageable debt. (e) Forced and insincere bonhomie. Now if we could just convince the great unthinking mass of cattle that is the modern UK population that they don't need an excuse to act like complete pillocks, we can do away with Christmas completely. Bah! Humbug! Bloomdido 23-11-2009, 20:38 So true. The cattle are so programmed, they do it without even thinking why they are doing it. Comsumerism at its ugliest. What has it got to do with 'The little baby Jesus'? Are we celebrating Saint Nick or what about the real reason for celebrating the 25th December (The rebirth of the sun, rising again in the sky)? |
