The Mariners have parted company with manager Mike Newell. It comes as no surprise to me. His tenure has been no better than the previous managers of Buckley and Rodger.

I think that one of the comments has probably got it right for the 'irretrievable differences'.

"Back me with substantial funds, or sack me."

Grimsby are in a terrible mess though. Short of a lottery win, or a Cup run of epic proportions (the former is more likely), no funds are going to be available.

Seemingly wasted two years salary to pay-off Newell but where will the funds come from for the planned new ground?
Fenty, the chairman, claims:"We'll get it right." How many more managers will he employ before he does?

Personally speaking, he should concentrate on on-field activities whilever Blundell Park has a safety certificate. If they're not careful, they could end up having the best ground in the Blue Square North.

HOPE POWELL - dismisses Mariners' link.

I think this was always going to be a non-starter without being sexist.
Mariners' available funds must be limited. On Newell's appointment, I was told his salary was affordable in comparison with what Peter Taylor asked for and got at Wycombe.

As a long-time Scunny supporter, I should be feeling a certain schadenfreude at the chronic misfortunes of the Cod Heads... But I can't... Grimsby were traditionally the high-fliers (stop sniggering) in our area, and Scunny (apart from one delightful season when we were fighting Liverpool for promotion to the First...) the perennial underachievers. How things have changed... But what saddens me is how poor the teams are in England's two largest counties (as was). Scunthorpe are the best that Lincolnshire can offer, and Hull the best from Yorkshire...
