Wow hands down for success and user satisfaction.

As a neewbie to rpgs, the star wars universe may be more familiar initally but learning about the world is what makes WoW so compelling IMHO, its you standard fantasy fodder, ripped straight out of Tolkien and Moorcock. So shouldn't be too unfamiliar that it won't immerse you entirely. Only problem I'd say is that you will ahve tp prepare to lose your social life if you buy WoW, less so with SWG. I guess that could be a good or bad thing.

I play Wow and Matrix Online and can recommend both... although personally I prefer the Matrix Online.

Alternatively if you're undecided you could always wait a bit as D&D Online is coming out end of this year/start of next and that is rumoured to be excellent (as it should be with D&D universe to base it in)...

...and if you're really not bothered about waiting there's Warhammer Online planned for release in 2007 which from what I've heard/read should be awesome (am most definately getting that when it comes out!!).

Neither...get City of Heroes instead! Create a superhero, and quest in one heck of a huge, and ever expanding world...and with less (ie practically none) of the 'power snobbery' that you tend to get in many MMORPGs.

Bought it 3 months back and play it almost everyday. Recommended it to loads of people who are all as hooked on it as I am. Even better, each copy of the game comes with 2 full activation codes (so you can get a mate/ your other half to play it too)

I'd get World of Warcraft pal.

Get yerself on Doomhammer realm and say hi!!! Theres a guild on there where half of the members are Sheffielders.

not played any other recently than WoW and it's pretty good.
