did anyone here check out the cagefighting show on saturday night?

There were a few kickboxing bouts as well

What did you think from what you saw?

I didn't, but a friend into MMA did. She thought that the quality was low and testosterone levels were high. I respect her opinion as she's pretty damn good at MMA herself.

she's running a course on Training methods and injury prevension (http://www.planetjitsu.com/viewtopic.php?t=12965&highlight=) if you'd like to meet her. I'm sure you'd be welcome at the course, and anyone else who's interested.

Hi cyclone i was at the show
I saw that all the MMA figths ended in stoppages and tapouts
As did 2 out of the 3 kickboxing bouts.

The kickboxing bouts were under the new "Hybrid" rules system (as taught at sheffieldkickboxing.com ).

One was a clean KO from a head kick, 1 was a stoppage from ehad punches and the 65kg fight went the distance.

i think all in all it was a good show, didn't start on time but they never do, all the fighters walked out of the cage so thats good for the fighters, maybe not so good for people watching.
i think all the fighters were new to to the game or have only had a few fights, but they do have to start some where, so i think the quality was not that bad for the event, and yes the testosterone levels were high but thats what you get at these events

I got the impression that the skill levels were low though, which would disappoint if you know what you're looking at.

The cage kickboxing figths were not the greatest skill level at all.
Many of the kickboxers did not have a clue on how to low kick, how to block or coutner a low kick or even the basic footwork involved in setting it up.

A couple of them seemed to exhibit karate style kicking technique which made me cringe!
Having said that their hand skills were not bad

Oh and the Head kick KO was impressive

Which made u cringe - a poor demonstration of a karate kick or that they tries a 'karate style' kick?

the ineffective kicking of one or two of the "kickboxers"
i.e. rather than the teep, they were using Mae Geri, rather than a full hip twist powerful leg kick, one of them simply used a flicking foot slap type kick

hard to exaplin without visual if you get what i mean

Off topic a bit but....

Mae Geri (karate front kcik) ain't in itself a bad technique. Though the "snap" versions useless in owt except semi- contact points tournaments (and so is pretty useless overall IMO)

But the more powerful "thurst" version i still rate.

Mae Geri doesn't specifically refer to a karate style kick, it's just japanese for front kick, like yoko and Mae Washi Geri, side and front round kick.

I am not sure how much you follow the uk mma scene, but the cagewarriors quest events held in sheffield are mainly Amatuer and semi-pro so that should hardley come as a suprise

oh and you can find a picture of the head kick ko at cagewarrior's own forum in a thread called " Quest sheffield Results July 29th" in the event fourm (not enough posts for me to post a direct link :( )

saifa
thats what i emant
one of the boys in the kickboxing bout was using a snap front kick (really!) i think a "teep" (thrusting motion) would have been more appropriate.

Yeah that head kick KO was awesome!!!

What didnt impress me though was the way the guys coach(the guy that got caught) was mouthing off at the poor old ref(who has to protect the figthers) and the promoter afterwards!
thats for stopping the fight (wierd eh?)

Should aggressive idiots like that with no knowledge of health and safety be teaching martial arts?

Quality is relative - you should still be able to get quality even if it's amateur/semi-pro. It might not be up to pro standard, but there's no reason it shouldn't be of relative quality.

On another note, i heard there was some disappointment about one of the advertised fights being cancelled...

ohh I wouldn't disagree with that, was just clarifying the point incase any one was expecting pro level shows and were disapointed in the quality they saw.

Not sure which fight you are on about ( didn't see the show and hadn't planned to so didn't pay much attention to how was/was supposed to be fighting) but its always going to be a problem with people pulling out due to injuries etc. Its all ways a shame when it happens close to a fight.

I know some people who were expecting to see our own Ross P fighting, but the fight had been cancelled. After speaking with Ross they discovered the fight had been cancelled a while ago, but they'd not heard that so they were naturally disapponted

yeah that seems a shame. Cagewarriors do update their cards as and when any changes occur on their own web site. Assuming any promotional material was changed as well, while it is obviously disappointing I don't think there is a lot more they can do.

To be honest i go mainly to see the cage kickboxing fights.
There was only 3 of them but thats better than nothing.

It would be interesting to see how those kickboxers would fare on the kick/ thai shows in the midlands against kickboxers from specialised kickboxing clubs as opposed to many of the MMA style clubs that many of them come from.
