Hi.
I am thinking about getting a tank and some tropical fish.
I am new to fish and have been trying to look in to.
I want a tank which has a filter, apparently you can get ones which mean you hardly, if at all, need to clean out.
I have seen second hand tanks in cabinets which look nice. But i dont want to rush into buying anything before i fully know everything I need to.
Can someone who has a tank in their home give me as much info as possible and also if you have any links for a tank which is for sale which all the accessories I need. thanks

I have picked up the following advice:
# Get a tank which can hold at least 40 gallons (190 litre)
# Always have heaters & filter turned on and light on prob about 8 hours a day
# when buying a filter make sure it can handle the amount of water in your tank
# Buy filter pads (about £6)
# Always have a variety of food as different fish like different food.
£3 tub of flacked food (last about 4 months) £1.80 tub of pellet food (last about 3 months) £2.50 bloodworm frozen blocks (last about 4 months)
# Water changes-15% weekly. £40% monthly
# Clean gravel at same time as water or buy a gravel cleaner for about £10.
# Buy a water testing kit (mainly to test for nitrate) £15-£20
# Buy about 1-2 fish at first, then over a few weeks test the water
# Good starter fish: Neon tetras, platys (can breed heavily but can give to petshops), swordtails, clown loach.
# Becareful of silver shark & plecs as they can grow quite big. Also with some fish need to weigh lid down as some like to try n jump out of the tank!
Thats the info I have picked up so far.

You should'nt really introduce Neon Tetra as your first fish, as they are not as hardy as every one thinks they are, The ideal way to start up is with Danio's & Large bodied Tetra ie.... Serpae, bleeding Heart or Lemon. And dont introduce any bottom feeders for at least 4mths, once the tank is well cycled as there will not be enough algae or natural food for them to feed on. Hope this helps.

Thanks, thought about it and we've decided not to take on any yet. We are going to wait until after the new year when we have more time to do it properly. Thanks
