View Full Version : Who's your fave band, not many people know of?
ReginaldD 29-07-2005, 23:53 Which bands do you know of that not many people here know of. Everyone must have one of those cds in their collection wher if your mate puts it on there like "These are good when did you get this."
Just wondered if anyone has any hidden gems, my mate went to live in America for a couple of years and came back with some cds, which didn't get much airplay here and now these are some of my favourite cds. So what are your hidden secrets?
And if you're wondering the cds he brought back which i really liked are
Creed- Weathered, especially one last breath
Matchbox 20- Yourself our someone like you
Goo Goo Dolls- Dizzy up the girl
Have a listen to them on amazon if you haven't heard of them and if you think they are crap well you can just tell me how bad my taste in music is!
they are all pretty big bands though.
mine would be Lamb or Candidate.
best two British bands of the last few years.
ReginaldD 30-07-2005, 00:24 Pretty big bands if you know about them but not big, to most 14 year old as I was at the time. Most people my age (17) have'nt heard of them, as most people in England just listen to what ever the radio plays for them e.g. James Blunt.
WallBuilder 30-07-2005, 00:44 People have pawed through my record and CD collection and giggled helplessly at some of the gems I have hidden there.
Two bands that come to mind would have to be Pallas and The Enid, real unknowns to younger people and i like them as they both have fairly unique sounds unlike the many clone like sounding groups of today.
Lamb are definitely good!
Mine would probably be Nothingface.
Lifehouse or Tantric ;) Creed was my favourite band, sadly no more WallBuilder are you not a fan of Pendragon? And don't forget god Todd Rundgren.
absynthfairy 30-07-2005, 22:19 Fuzzbox were genious in the late eighties.
Pink Sunshine was and still is an anthem - even if the DJ in Reflex hadn't heard of it.
Jo the Bass player used to work with me in the Carphone Warehouse in Birmingham.
Toad the Wet Sprocket and The Gin Blossoms, though the latter achieved some fame.
Toad the Wet Sprocket - you made that one up??
Medicine Head - a very old hippy band before psychedelia set in. They're still touring, and I've heard they're now utter tripe.
The Wedding Present
Leeds based band with about 9 million albums yet noone I know has heard of them really... such a shame as they are fantastic!!! Playing at Leeds and Reading this year though

I also love Goldfrapp who are becoming more popular now.

I've heard of Medicine Head....
And Toad the Wet Sprocket do exist!
The album of theirs I like is called 'Dulcinea'.

They are an american band that play a sub division of grindcore (which is itself a sib division of hardcore) called goregrind. Basically it is very experimental, screamy heavy punk rock... with zombies.
It's brilliant.
Other stuff I've liked that no-one seems to have heard of is a group of nowegian artists called the Leningrad Cowboys whose mos famous album has them doing covers of famous songs with a backing band of the moscow red army choir.
Another artist I love but no-one has heard of is called 'the King'. He is an elvis impersonator who sings covers also, but he only does covers of band who have had an artist in them die. Oh, and he sings the songs in the style of elvis. His best work is a cover of 'Come as you are" by Nirvana
Wilf
I've heard of the Wedding Present - a wicked indie band from the 90's. I remember seeing "Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now?" on the Chart Show and being blown away by the gee-tar sound and the lead singer's amazing vocals. Like a Yorkshire Kermit the frog. :hihi:
Todd Rundgren is God and AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB

Yes! The Leningrad Cowboys are quite bizarre but rather endearing. Heard a couple of their tracks a while back now....
Anyone here heard of a band called 'UK'? Or 'The Durutti Column'?

Vini Reilly, Manchester in the late 70s? Yes, I remember - fabulous name.
My candidates: both bands of the 80s, the Wolfhounds and McCarthy. Both recommended to me in the early 90s by fellow fanatics of the Manics.

Todd Rundgren produced one of the New York Dolls' albums, didn't he?
StarSparkle
Yes their debut album he also produced on so many albums like Bat of of Hell (meatloaf)
Harem Scarem: canadian rock band specialising in the melodic rock style, guitars sounds like extreme and songs are just amazing sing-a-long classics. better than def leppard...but not known? criminal!!
Beautiful Creatures: sleazy rock in the style of guns n roses, 1 album and its fantastic....they are doing another but have lost the guitar of DJ ASHBA who really stood out on the debut.
Smalltown Heroes: 1 album around 1996...great songs and unique style...closest i can say is a lighter wildhearts/3 colours red. sadly poor promotion meant no further albums.
Wig Wam: Scandanavian rock band, mix up bon jovi, darkness, def leppard, motley crue and your dad dressing up and you get wig wam!....debut album will be out here soon i hope...then you can all check out the class of it...bit cheesy in places..bit eurovision in some of the choruses....but class all the same.
Porcupine Tree and any of Steve Wilsons other projects.
Evil Edna's Horror Toilet. Never heard any of their stuff but it's a great name!
StarSparkle 30-07-2005, 23:28 What about Dumpy's Rusty Nuts? :suspect: Never heard them but they deserve to be great.
Closely related to Ned's Atomic Dustbin :D

Utopia - Ra Electrified fairtale :D
WallBuilder 30-07-2005, 23:45 Todd Rungren is scarcely an unknown after all if he's going to be mentioned then surely Steve Hillage, Steve Hackett, Rick Wakeman, Mike Rutherford and many others could be mentioned. I do have a leaning towards that era and type of music.
Some of the bands mentioned previously I have recognised and on a very quick trawl through a few of my albums I came up with Nine below Zero, Dark Star and a slightly more well known name Tangerine Dream, I really must get my turntable up and running again and have a wander down memory lane.

Wallbuilder,
Have you come across Edgar Froese and Michael Rother from the late 1970s / early 1980s?
Similar to Tangerine Dream.
Steve Hackett - good choice!
Joe
Smallcreeeps day - Mike Rutherford :)
WallBuilder 31-07-2005, 00:11 Wouldn't it be nice to have an establishment open up that had OUR sort of music on the juke box. I sometimes used to try and wind up both Ken at the Wap and Bob at Rebels by trying to think of and ask for the most obscure bands that I knew of. However for the most part bands like Focus, Curved Air or King Crimson aren't really heavy enough for the likes of the Wap and definitely would of been guaranteed to clear the floor at Rebels and then they had the cheek to play Mister Blue Sky by the Electric Light Orchestra!!!
Cocteau Twins (ok, so they are not so un-heard of) Blue Beard is 'our' song.
Also, Wickham Porteous - not a band I know, but really good all the same

I love Toad the Wet Sprocket! All I Want, and Walk on the Ocean are two of my favorite songs. As is, Until I Fall Away by The Gin Blossoms.
Whatever happened to The Gin Blossoms? I remember hearing something about them breaking up, then their singer killed himself? Or died of a drug overdose? I'm not sure.
I also absolutely adore the Texas Tornados. http://www.mp3.com/texas-tornados/artists/4846/songs.html
Los Lonely Boys are three mexican-american brothers from a tiny town in West Texas, who are making a name for themselves in the states, but I don't know how well known they are in the UK. http://www.mp3.com/los-lonely-boys/artists/528236/songs.html
I also rather like the Reverend Horton Heat. http://www.reverendhortonheat.com/
To my surprise, I learned that DanSumption had not only heard of them, he liked them as well!
:) Sierra
Sierra,
Yes, Doug Hopkins split from them shortly after 'New Miserable Experience' and then died from drink / drugs abuse, I think. They carried on until the early 2000s - don't know whether tehy're still doing stuff.
I've heard the odd track from Los Lonely Boys on one of Bob Harris's shows here on either Radio 2 or Radio 6.
And whilst I'm at it - Calexico, anybody?
Joe
Couple of bands I like which not many people know of - well may be because they were before my time and I'm an old git are "The Eastbeats" & "Them".
"Them" was the band front lined by Van Morrision before it split up.

A new(ish) band from Montreal called the Gutter Demons, they are part of the psychobilly revival out in Canada. They have just the one album out but are due to release their second in a month, hopefully the bew album will play in Europe and England.
KookyKoo 01-08-2005, 18:46 Frou Frou - now disbanded I believe, but Imogen Heap (the vocalist) is a solo artist- their album "Details" is one of the best things I discovered last year, a really sublime laid-back thing.
Pete Yorn- I think big-ish in America, only ever met one person here who's heard of him.
Similarly, The Shins are pretty good.
Listening to Jack Johnson's "In Between Dreams" atm, after seeing a TV advert for it- not bad at all.
Gemma Hayes and Thea Gilmore are two other favourites, saw Gemma Hayes live on the acoustic stage at V a few years back and was moved to tears, so good. From the US, I highly rate Fiona Apple (again, big-ish there but less well-known here), wish Sony would release her 3rd album...

She even came down the isle to "The Woods & the Rivers are Silent" at our recent wedding, the perfect theme for the perfect day.

have they though. They've played 3 final gigs in Sheffield and they seem to keep splitting and getting back together and suprising me when I see a new album out.
Good bands. I see someone likes their chill-out music.
would add Filla Brazil, Boards of Canada and Nightmares on Wax. I love Nouvelle Vague's cover of "Love will tear us apart".
BoroughGal 03-08-2005, 13:34 According to the message boards on their web site, they definetely have - but I will stand corrected.... When did they play their last gig in Sheffield?
Yep to Fila Brazilia, and I'm loving Nouvelle Vagues version of "In a Manner of Speaking" at the moment - what a beautiful voice she has! But then, I'm a sucker for sweet girly voices - especially Beth Gibbons/Portishead.

I used to be a big fan of Gong, not quite so crazy about them nowadays though I still listen to them from time-to-time.
A friend of mine took the photo which appears inside the Camembert Electrique gatefold, as well as some other stuff such as this (http://www.ibiblio.org/mal/MO/philm/gong/).
For the record, my favourite slightly-obscure band are the Cardiacs - YEAH YEAH YEAH, I love them sooo much. But, having mentioned them a few times on here and always found more Cardiacs fans than I would have expected crawling out of the woodwork, I ought to say that I prefer Sea Nymphs and Lake of Puppies - let's keep it obscure, right?
I also like a lot of stuff by Bill Laswell, especially his early "mutant disco" tracks with Material, as a solo artist, and with Last Exit. I'm not so keen on his later ambient/dub/hip-hop stuff. He had the most amazing bass-sound back then, but nowadays he's more famous as a producer, having worked with people as diverse as Mötorhead, Mick Jagger, Sly & Robbie and Herbie Hancock.
Agree that Frou Frou v good......on another end of the scale any rock/indie fans may like FUTURE KINGS OF SPAIN...an Irish band taht have never toured over here - think they sent the THRILLS instead!!!
Venetian Blind by FKOS is fantastic and not many people over here seem to have heard of them!

Agent Gypo 23-05-2006, 14:13 Aphex Twin - Richard D James Album - Everyone has heard of him, but few are familiar with his music. Many seem to think all he's done is 'Come To Daddy' and 'Windowlicker'. Probably my favourite of RDJ's Aphex Twin releases.
Autechre - Incunabula and Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - Forget Portishead, Lamb and the hugely overrated Massive Attack, these were the best down-tempo electronic albums of the 90's.
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures - Like Aphex Twin, another act who everyone knows the name of. Seemingly few people are aware their catalogue consists of material aside from 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.
Peaches - The Teaches of Peaches - Sooooooooo sexy, particularly 'XX AAA', and there's an awesome remix of 'Set it Off' mixed with The Kinks' 'All Day and All of The Night'.
Crass - Penis Envy - One of the best British punk albums yet sadly overlooked in favour of inferior material from the likes of The Clash and The Damned.
Kraftwerk - Computer World - Incredible album, and some great live versions floating around too.
The Postal Service - Give Up - Worth getting for 'Such Great Heights' and 'The District Sleeps Alone'.
Cabaret Voltaire - (anything from their back catalogue) - Arctic Monkeys best group from Sheffield? You're having a laugh.... Cabaret Voltaire were hugely influential and absolutely incredible. Richard H Kirk also put on the best night The Corporation has ever seen last year.
Atari Teenage Riot - 60 Second Wipeout - Full of almost unlistenable feedback and frantic drum loops, sheer noise terror at its finest.
If you like DC/Lizzy et al, check out Tokyo Dragons and Danko Jones.
For when you are in a more laid back mood, Logh.
CaptainSwing 23-05-2006, 14:37 Two of the best live bands I ever saw were Cable (from Derby) and Trumans Water (from California). I'd guess that they are not very well known. Sweet - will have a look for it - cheers!!
Peaches - The Teaches of Peaches - Sooooooooo sexy, particularly 'XX AAA', and there's an awesome remix of 'Set it Off' mixed with The Kinks' 'All Day and All of The Night'.
An excellent choice! This is name-checked in the forthcoming single (Turn It Up) by Robots in Disguise, who just happen to be my favourite band that not many people have heard of. They've been kicking around in Europe for years and have just been signed up to President in the UK - finally getting a chance to get something out on commercial release.
Keep an eye out for Trash Money too - currently unsigned but sure to change in the near future.
Panic at the disco!! not sure there that well known yet...they are fantastic :D
The Dave matthews band ( went to see them in san francisco 2004 ) amazing band.
Defenestration ( heavy metal female vocals-brill)
Butterfly effect
Alter bridge ( spawn of The almighty "Creed" ) well worth a listen if you were a creed fan.

And Ozric Tentacles - like Gong, not really one of my tops any more, but I have very fond memories. Roly (RIP) gave me a very appreciated gift at Glastonbury festival many years ago.

My fav band at the mo is The Shins - saw them live last friday at Rock City and it was probably the gig I've ever been to. They had the place going mental. Still not sure if they'll ever make the top ten in the UK but they're damned good and well worth a listen, they write such intelligent lyrics, interesting melodies and the lead singer has a lovely voice.
I would also suggest Sufjan Stevens who is ace.
CaptainSwing - I remember CABLE from when I was at uni in Derby.. I think my friend used to drum for them sometimes! Or that could have been Twinkie - it was a long time ago!
scarey girl 24-05-2006, 08:06 Keep your eye out for a local band Trailor Park Trash playing in and around Sheffield. They are really good rock/metal band and are a totally awesome. Saw them last night (for the 5th or 6th time no less) at The Grapes and it was a brilliant gig.
Herbaliser 24-05-2006, 15:59 Fridge Mountain Fires (reformed Cecil!)
I loved Cecil. I shall be looking out for these guys :)
Ozomatli
Seconded!
A few more:
Chungking
Clifford Gilberto
Fat Freddy's Drop
Jamie Lidell
Noonday Underground
Ray LaMontagne (fantastic live- shivers-down-spine type voice)
Montrose Avenue
Youngblood Brass Band
sheff_life 24-05-2006, 16:11 For me it would have to be Sublime, great music for a sunny day cheers me up no end.
virgoman3 24-05-2006, 18:07 Anybody remember an 80's band from Rotherham called vision, Their single lucifers friend was one of the best electropop tracks ever.
Pollinates.
Yeah I know it's an ad but give them a try and see what you think ?
Pollinates (http://www.myspace.com/pollinates)
sheff-lad 25-05-2006, 12:19 Fave Band gotta be 'The Calling'
quite big in america but no-ones heard of them over here!!!!
NEKRO138 25-05-2006, 13:15 I listen to lots of bands not very well known. Some of them, however, REALLY need to be heard. I'll just name 5 for now.
1. IGNITE - just got a new album out called Our Darkest Days. If anyone likes hardcore punk, get this. The guy's voice is amazing.
2. REFUSED - another hardcore band. Get their Shape of Punk to come album. Incredible.
3. 65 DAYS OF STATIC - Sheffield lads! Just getting a big following now. Amazing live. Instrumental.
4. TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS - Not very big here, but huge in America. When you hear the greatest hits, you'll realise you know all the songs.
5. JOOK - A white R'N'B band from the 70's, similar to the Who. Only just discovered them. Listen to them!
heartshaped1 25-05-2006, 13:50 The Tansads.
I LOVED THEM!
Nobody seems to have ever heard of them but their second album 'Up the Shirkers' is fantastic! They were around in the late eighties early nineties.
And Mega City Four and Back to the Planet! Woo hoo! :headbang:
DanSumption 25-05-2006, 14:52 :) I have very fond memories of a Mega City Four gig in Bristol in 1988.
A friend of mine used to play in the Senseless Things, who gigged a lot with MC4.
New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat World
johnbradley 25-05-2006, 16:43 dog canute (best (though possibly grizzliest) post-beefcore band in the world)
grain (great wierdo rock)
silent front (post-hardcore shellacisms)
Cardiacs
Gentle Giant
Paradise Lost, to name some.
does anyone remember The Pursuit of Happiness? Their album 'Love Junk' is a lost classic
I love the Kooks & the Paddingtons. When I mention 'em at work I get loads of blank looks! If it's not on Galaxy's playlist they havent heard of it...

I went to see Mega City Four at Sheffield Hallam Union I think it was, a good few years ago now. Bloody good gig.

MorriganGrey 26-05-2006, 12:16 A couple of my favourite bands that no-one's really heard of (out of the scene, that is) are Orb, Throbbing Gristle (yes, they do exist, they're a psychadelia band) and Lab 4 ( a bit more mainstram, but never mind)
Orb's "urbus terrarum" is a FANTASTIC album, really chilled, as is Throbbing Gristle's Thee Psychick Sacrifice.

moodi_doodi mentioned Throbbing Gristle a few pages back (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=1182560&postcount=83). :)

cool, sometimes it feels like I'm the only one lol. well, me and my mum.
Fave bands are Doves and The Magic Numbers...
i know they are quite well known now, but the avergage person still looks at me as if to say "who the ***** are they?" when i tell em...
both absolutely ace live...
DanSumption 26-05-2006, 16:21 both absolutely ace live...
Magic Numbers at the uni last year was a great gig, I have never ever seen a band so appreciative of their audience, or smiles so much wider than the faces they're sitting upon.
Anybody remember an 80's band from Rotherham called vision, Their single lucifers friend was one of the best electropop tracks ever.
:o I can't believe this! Here I am, 12,000 miles away from home, looking on internet for the song Lucifer's Friend, and this link comes up! What a brilliant record it was! Reminds me of Rotters in Doncaster! Had it on a single, was the B side, but lent it a friend but never got it back!!!!!!!
Neverata 29-05-2006, 21:07 I havent read all of the posts. But two bands i love that not many people i talk to know are:
Captain Everything
Zebrahead
EdnaKrabappe 02-06-2006, 09:55 She's in the charts at number 13 but I hadn't heard of her until a couple of weeks ago.
Nerina Pallot. Her voice is amazing - think Alanis Morrisette, Edie Reader, Suzanne Vega but all crisper with a British accent. Saw her on Monday at the Memorial Hall (a friend who's liked her for ages had a spare ticket) and she blew me away. Proper hairs on the back of your neck stuff.
I particularly love The last tango off Dear Frustrated Superstar.
At the moment I'm wallowing in self pity so it fits my mood perfectly.
I''ll be back listening mostly to indie rock soon.
stussonicos 02-06-2006, 10:23 Not really that obscure but it amazes me that most of the people I mix with and share my life with have never heard of some of my favs.
Eagles of Death Metal
Mondo Generator
Zapp & Roger
Amon Tobin
My Vitriol
Winnebago Deal
The Cooper Temple Clause
UNKLE
riot187tns 02-06-2006, 23:27 I've heard of Medicine Head....
And Toad the Wet Sprocket do exist!
The album of theirs I like is called 'Dulcinea'.
Joe
What film is that name from, Dulcinea??? *****! It's on the tip of me tongue...

Amon Tobin is good... Very GOOD. You should try some other Ninja Tune acts if you haven't already. IMO the label itself is a pretty infallible guarantee of quality.
funkymiss 03-06-2006, 00:10 The Bouncing Souls
Dropkick Murphys
Mad Caddies
Descendents
Anti-Flag
(Bad Religion) some people will have heard of them, in fact if you're into punk you should know most of the bands I've mentioned.
I like dirty glass by dropkick murphys! My brother is into punk so I've listened to all of these :)
ToryCynic 03-06-2006, 00:36 I'm listening to Micah P. Hinson (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002UJMDE/qid=1149295099/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl/026-7981441-8046854)- he's very good - pity the production of the album is over-recorded. Lemon Jelly' 'Nice Weather For Ducks' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006C77O/qid=1149295147/sr=2-2/ref=sr_2_11_2/026-7981441-8046854)is always amusing, Stephen Fretwell (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0006H9AEE/qid=1149295189/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_11_1/026-7981441-8046854), Hootie & The Blowfish, (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001CNRM0/qid=1149295252/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_11_3/026-7981441-8046854)Nick Drake - fairly well-known (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000026FOA/qid=1149295278/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_11_1/026-7981441-8046854), and Ray LaMontagne (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002TRSO0/qid=1149295347/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_11_1/026-7981441-8046854) are excellent musicians. Jack Johnson (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/026-7981441-8046854)'s older works 'Brushfire Fairytales' from 2000 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006LSCY/qid=1149295379/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_11_4/026-7981441-8046854) is far better than the 'In Between Dreams' [2005] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007OC71O/qid=1149295379/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_11_1/026-7981441-8046854) album, which inevitably got him known to 'the masses'. The fairly new singer, Roger Tarry, is pretty impressive too. And of course, who can forget the excellent voice of Willy Mason (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00066D1YK/qid=1149295476/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_11_1/026-7981441-8046854)?
Going onto a completely different genre area, Welcome To The North by The Music - excellent 'loud' music! (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002OTIC0/qid=1149295519/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_11_1/026-7981441-8046854)
:)
