Hi,

My partner and I are also southerners who relocated to Sheffield six months ago. We ended up in Fulwood because it was the only area in which we could find rental properties which accepted dogs - this I now put down to its middle classness.

Be aware: party capital Fulwood is not. To answer your points directly:

1. Nearest swimming pool

I could well be wrong but I think it's probably Ponds Forge in the city centre. Alternatively try Hillsborough leisure centure.

2. Nearest pub

Oh dear, oh dear. There is The Sheffield at the top of Crimicar Lane which ain't amazing and if you live at the bottom of the hill it's one hell of a walk.

Ranmoor has two pubs and a wine bar, of which I really like the Ranmoor Inn though it's not really walkable. There's the Rising Sun in Nether Green next to Tesco Express and this does do cheap beer.

I was speaking to someone about the lack of pubs in Fulwood and apparently it's to do with the covenant of the land which stipulates no boozers.

3. Nearest cinema

Again town - the Odeon

4. Nearest video hire shop

Broomhill or Crookes probably - put it this way I've never noticed one. Could be one a Lodge Moor maybe...

5. Nearest restaurants

See pubs. Head for Ranmoor.

6. Nearest church

You're lucky here - there's one in Fulwood

7. Nearest gym

Town again I suspect!

8. Nearest anything of interest!

It's the posh end of town and right on the edge of the countryside. The Mayfield Valley is very picturesque.

Be aware: Fulwood seems colder and wetter than anywhere else in Sheffield as far as I can tell.

Sounds like I've got a bit of a downer on it which is a bit unfair - just doesn't really suit us.

The reality is it's safe, wealthy, has a newsagents, co-op etc and - if you listen to customers in shops - either a fairly substantial immigrant community of southerners or very posh Yorkshire folk!

I'd agree with most of the above.

Fulwood was originally settled by the Quakers.
This explains the absence of pubs and/or fun :)

On the other hand Fulwood is seen as very desirable, I reckon theres more of those disgusting Porsche 4x4's there than on the Kings Road - this in itself may tell you all you need to know.

If you can walk to the Ranmoor Inn then that would probably do it for me.
The Bulls Head is average and the wine bar on that strip is full of cliche wannabees - apologies if thats your thing. Actually this wine bar probably typifies all I hate about Fulwood, its both dull and yet full of flashy wealth and consumerism.

So to answer your questions, bearing mind I actually lived in Nether Green for a while:

1. Prob at King Eddies school.
2. See above
3. Town
4. Broomhill
5. Ranmoor Tandoori, which is actually rubbish and unauthentic.
6. Fulwood and Ranmoor.
7. Dunno

Id also agree with the previous poster about 8.
Fulwood is widely perceived as 'the place to live'.
The Mayfield valley is lovely.
Its on the 60 bus route which is perfect for town, uni and station. Note a car is essential in Fulwood as nothings walkable.
Schools are all excellent.

On the down side note all the above plus its really a white middle class ghetto, which is cool if thats your thing and dull if its not.

Also its architecture is a bit safe, try Broomhill or Nether Edge when you settle for good.

Cheers

Thanks guys - really helpful ......

Not sure if Fulwood is the place for us - thank god we are only renting. :(

Would you say Ranmoor is better for amenities/living?

Juicyb125,

Don't worry about Fullwood I'd say you have landed on your feet there.

The downer on the other post is probabaly sour grapes (ducks head).

Fullwood it self has a Co op, newsagent, general store, indian take away, fruit and veg shop, hairdressers, threshers and butchers.

Ranmoor is about 2 or 3 bus stops away and you would'nt really know it was another district. Walking there is no problem.

Ranmoor has 2 pubs, Bulls head and the Ranmoor inn, their is also the wine bar which I suppose looks snobby but give it a go.

Their's also a great Chinese, a sit in Indian restraunt, chip shop, off lisence and other general stores.

Just before Ranmoor their is the Nethergreen turn off which has more shops including a Italian cafe, hairdressers, Chinese, Diy store, Tescos garage over the road and another pub, The rising sun.

All this on the edge of the Peak district and I would recomend the trail that runs from high on the moors ( near Rininglow ) all the way to Endcliffe park at Hunters bar on Ecasall road ( close to the town centre ).
Fullwood is about halfway on this trail.

It's also not far from the Sheffield centre with a good bus service which will take about half an hour ( if that?)
Which is ideal for swimming pools, gyms ect.

You are also the right side of Sheffield for Manchester which is only 28 miles away over the A57 Snake Pass.

Of course if you feel guilty about being so middleclass Sheffield does have districts with other qualitys.

Thanks Modesty :)

I have no problems being middleclass at all - just don't want to live somewhere too boring (if you know what I mean).

Also the comment that it was colder and wetter than any part of Sheffield scared me a bit!

We don't ask for much - just a nice local pub and restaurant etc...

Mind you I have visited the area a couple of times now while sorting things out and I find that it doesn't take long to get to places - it seems that everything is a 10 min drive away - which is not far at all.... (I may be mistaken though!) So if it is too rubbish, we can get in a car and drive.

I am really looking forward to walking the trail you mentioned.

Thanks everyone - the practical stuff has helped me quite a lot - I think I shall have to wait till I get there to decide whether I like Fulwood or not though as there seems to be differing opinions.

If you're coming up from London where driving for one hour means you're still stuck in the urban sprawl, you'll be pleasantly surprised. I live on that side of Sheffield and 10 minutes drive gets me into town and 10 minutes the other way will get you down to Ladybower, which is a world away. And if a slightly boring area means that people can walk about safely at night, then that's alright with me.

Juicy

If you let us know which bit of London youre in I will reply with whichever bit of Sheffield is the best match :)

However, if you can find anywhere suitable from where you can walk to the Ranmoor Inn then as I said that would do it for me.

I strongly stand by my comments about the Ranmoor Tandoori, its rubbish, especially if youve moved from somewhere with a rich choice of quality ruby's. The chinese on the same strip is equally average too. there are far better in Sheffield for chinese and curry - another thread perhaps?

The weather comment I have no opinion on.

Essentially if youre moving from London then you may find Fulwood a bit sanitised and safe. However it may be thats what youre looking for.

Cheers

Sorry forgot to say, and this is the edited bit, which bit of London would you like to find to live in up in Sheffield? Hampstead, Islington, Hoxton or Peckham?
Or none of the above?

Currently living in Wimbledon but not the really expensive bit!

Good restaurants are quite important to us - so probably end up going into town. Like nice cosy pubs, not the lager lout kind.... wine bars not usually our scene, but if there's nothing else we will go!:P

Quick information:

Nearest Swimming Pool : University Swimming Pool on Northumberland Road, or King Edwards Baths.

Nearest Gym : Probably at University

Pubs : Rising Sun at Nethergreen (not that good), Bulls Head, going down hill, Ranmoor Inn, in my opinion, very good. Couple of pubs in Lodgemoor as well.

There used to be a good Indian on Hanging Water Road, (called Stirrings I think)

Have fun
