Aldi has a computer in their offers starting next week.

It is a Titanium MD8385 Base Station at £499.99

You can see it by going to http://uk.aldi.com/ and clicking on the offer.

It seems like good value to me. Does anyone think that I should avoid it?

They're in my local store already.

Computer stuff tends to not get bought out instantly where I live so if anyone is desperate for one and doesn't fancy queueing and doesn't mind a drive to Manchester I can PM you the details.

As for the machines - tremendous value, good German build quality and outstanding technical support.

Theyr'e also doing a 17" TFT screen for £140 on their website. It's branded "Medion". Google search for 17" Medion monitor brings up b*****r all  . Anyone got one and are they any good? I quite like the idea of saving some deskspace.

No idea on Medion branded gear, but for that money you should be buying a decent brand - random example: LG 1715S for £147 at dabs (http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hardware/monitorsanddisplays/productView.htm?quicklinx=36gy)

On the systems themselves, places like Dell will sell you a system for around that price including a monitor - it's all down to the specs and knowing exactly what you want and more importantly need :) Let's face it though, £500 is pretty cheap for a good spec system if being able to pick it up there and then is important for you. I'm sure plenty of people remember when the equivalent spec would have cost a couple of grand (it's not that long ago!)

Yes, I think you are right. Then again, when shopping for monitors in the past, I always liked to see what I was buying. It's the bit of a computer system (next in importance to the keyboard) which can either make using it a pleasure or a chore.

Plus with Aldi, you are more likely to get a full refund if there's a deal pixel or a fault. This isn't necessarily the case at computer shops.

The Medion and Tevion brands are very well respected in Germany.

I looked at medion earlier this year and was advised against because apparently they use non-standard parts which are difficult to obtain. Also when I emailed them for pre sales support/advice and a quote it took them over 6 months before I received a reply. Wouldnt touch them with a barge pole
