Hello all, hope you can help. Our dog Lassie is 15 in December, but lately shes got lots of dry, itchy patches appearing on her fur. She definately hasnt got fleas so it isnt that. Im presuming its just age related, apart from this, shes a fit as a fiddle!.

Could anyone suggest what this is and what is the best way to treat it, I dont really want to take her to the vets because she doesnt travel too well. Thanks, Lisa x

Do you mean patches that look like eczema type thing that go really red sore looking and sometimes bleeds? Our dog gets that, we had to stop taking her to be groomed because that seemed to be making it worse and the vet didn't know what it was, but it seems to have cleared up now, but it took a good year to get rid of.

Did you use any sprays or creams? :)

Well, the vet gave us a cream, but that didn't do anything at all. And we haven't found anything on the market that would clear it up, I think it's more about trying to find out what is triggering it. I think the stuff our groomer used was triggering it on our dog. But you could tell it was irritating her because she'd bite it at any chance she got.

Some dogs have skin which is very sensitive to grooming, esp with harsh implements such as combs or furminators

Allergies can also produce this kind of problem, commonly carpet cleaners or grass pollen

Also, just asked my mum about it... She said the vet gave her a steriod injection and some antibiotics, but was told to not take her to be groomed as it could be a reaction to it.

Aww, have you not got a vet near you that you could walk to? My mum uses one at Chesterfield for some reason even though its miles away. Yes, you'll probably end up having to go to the vet. Do you take the dog to be groomed? Could they have changed what they use if so?

Me and my husband groom her. She has a home visit for her claws clipping though because Im too nervous to do it!:hihi: If I cant get it to clear up, Ill take her to the vets, but she'll sulk all day when she gets back home!

Aww bless her. It could be something else triggering it then, it's probably a case of stopping certain things until you find out what it is.

is it eczema? has something in the household routine changed which she may have decided is stressful? a new dog moved into the street? a new cat in 'her' garden perhaps?

try bathing her in diluted savlon liquid and see if it improves. it can't do any harm :)

Lassie is the least stressed doggy I know, so I doubt its that! Ive crossed everything else off the list so it looks like a vet visit (after trying your salvon suggestion!)

hi there, might seem a daft question but have you been doing any decorating, especially plastering or anything where theres lots of dust.....one of my customers cocker got a really bad rash on his tummy area, went to vets had tests done etc turns out was allergic to dust mites. They had been plastering a wall in the conservatory and this is what had caused the problem. Good luck hope you get it sorted.

Brude had a strange skin condition which wasn't immediately identifiable

The vet suggested speculative treatment instead of skin scrapes to avoid having him knocked out for the scrape (cost was going to be six and two threes), so he was given everything from advocate flea treatment which also kills mites (which frontline won't do), antibiotics, to antihistamines

We found out by accident that it was changing the flavour of his dog food which was causing an allergy - to fish

What I'm saying is, if you're set against a vet visit, most of those cures you can try yourself (dogs can take human piriton for instance), just make sure you give each a chance, and don't overlap them

My vet recently recommended Evening Primrose capsules for itchy skin.

Also, you can buy dog tea tree cream or spray online for a couple of pound.

Try these before a costly vets visit.

Best of luck
