Been waiting for this topic to come up. I was at Grange until 1964 and am saddened to hear that both of the school houses have now been demolished. I used to play netball and other sports for the school and would love to hear from any fellow team members or indeed fellow classmates from this era.

I won a scholarship there in 1954 and my base was Holt House. It's very sad the way it's gone.

I was at Grange Grammar School from 1954 to 1961. I remember the teachers Leeming, Perry, Poyser, Sheldrake, Longmuir, Rigby and Rogers. It is a pity that there was no old girls' association.

Oh yes I remember most of those names, brings back memories of my time there. Me and my friend Sheila used to disappear on games afternoons. We would go in the loos, change out of uniform and escape through a little gate. Then spend the afternoon in a cafe playing the juke box.

I went to Grange 1954-1959 .The year I started they had just changed the name from Hurlfield so we had new badges to buy.I remember all those teachers and Miss Ruff the english teacher and Mrs Gilbert who taught Latin .
I have fond memories of my time there .My school photo (which was of the whole school eventually crumbled with age

There's no mistaking me on the photo of the first years taken in 1958. I'm the one not in uniform. This was because we were moving to Bakewell, where we stayed just 2 years, then I came back to GG in 1960.

Anybody remember Wendy Hall from Edale Road Ecclesall. Went from Ecclesall C of E on Ringinglow Road to Hurlfield as it was in Sept 1953 - probably left in 1958 or 9. I believe her parents took over the Miners Arms at Eyam around then. Very attractive girl.

Does anyone know what happened to Dianne Quixall? She was my OH's (then known as Platty) best friend at Grange from 58 to 64.

She was in the same year as Elizabeth Rorison, Linda Cooley, Christine Charlsworth, Laura Herrett and Margaret Bower.

OH thinks Dianne went to Australia to do nursing, and married a Danish bricklayer called Carsten.

They too used to sit in the loos instead of doing games, but did their French homework apparently.

I attended Grange Grammar from 1966 -1971. I have found a picture of the conservatory at Holt House, but have not had any luck finding pictures of The Grange, i've typed Hurlfield Grammar into google images but nothing came up. Its a shame that they have both been demolished as i have fond memories of them.

Never went to Grange but I dated several lasses from there. Yanina Koszalinkski was the love of my life in the 60s and Joan Law followed (not too soon) afterwards. I also remember Jenny Evans who I snogged but once (sigh). Good memories of long ago. I wonder what they're doing now.

Still no luck with Dianne Quixall .Ive contacted all the Quixalls in Sheffield and it seems as if she has fallen off the planet .Maybe all that line of her family have passed on and perhaps she has gone to Australia as OH thinks .

I have a framed photo of the Grange from the late sixties as I recognise the classic cars of Mr Jones (English) and an older, male teacher parked outside the front entrance. That would make it after the merger with the Abbeydales. I was there from 1966-1973.

I was looking at Friends Reunited last night & Diane is listed there and
there's also a photo with Eli Rorison & others on, I don't know about Diane. Anyhow I sent a note to Diane & told her someone was looking for her
on this forum. I hope you can find each other.

I was at Grange from 1960-65.

I was at Grange 1956-61. Remember the prefabs below the path from the Grange to Holt House? And the science blocks across the courtyard at the Grange? And does anyone remember the huge intake of breath when Miss Nelson married Miss Ward's father? I also remember Miss Holt (PE), Miss Rogers (music) - after she retired, Miss Williams took over, Miss Kelsey - I think she took maths as did Mrs Reynolds. Miss Pogson for history and Mrs Luspay for German and Miss Rigby for French. I read with amazement on Friends Reunited years ago that an old girl was then living in the same village as Miss Ruff and Miss Longmuir. Couldn't believe they were still alive, they seemed quite old when we were at school. I had Miss Ruff for spoken English.

Yes, I was there from 1960 to 1965. Our class is having a 50th reunion party in September.
I'm researching a documentary for the BBC looking into education, university and the jobs market.

We're keen to talk to some people who attended grammar schools in the 1960s & 1970s, to find out if they feel that this provided them with life opportunities that they might not otherwise have had.

I see you have a reunion coming up and wondered if I could chat to you about it.

My number is 0207 529 9555, or you can email me at simonlloyd@tigeraspect.co.uk

Thanks,
Simon

I was watching the last night of the Proms when they always sing jerusalem. It made me think about our speech days and prize giving, which were held at the Victoria Hall on Norfolk Street. I always remember Miss Rogers our music teacher being so strong on our diction and trying to get us to put great emphasis on "BRI---IIING me my bow of Burning Gold. Were you there too?
Incidently I have just come back from a few days in Sheffield. I can't say I like it anymore. Abbeydale and woodseats seem very scruffy to me, and the town centre is nothing special, the bits I saw

I was there from 64 until 72. By then of course, the terrible crime had been committed.
We'd been amalgamated with ABBEYDALE!!!

Its 40 years this year since Grange ceased to be.
I went back to an evening class when I returned to Sheffield in the late 80's. all the buildings, including the "huts" were still standing and in use. The room I was in had always been the needlework room and imagine my huge surprise when, on nosing around in the staff office, there was Mis Vernon's overall still hanging on a hook behind the door!! It was as if her ghost was watching me - and inevitably finding much to criticise.

Another thing which shocked me was that people were actually walking across the sacred turf always known as the bowling green!

Some of us from the old Alpha form met up a few years ago and this led to a regular meet up at least once a year. If anyone else would like to join us, were meeting again at the end of October. Just pm me for details. Its great fun. (are you there Mary Glossop??)

Thanks Linchpinlulu for the information. I'd often wondered when the terrible deed happened - when I was there (1956/61) there was such rivalry between Grange and Abbeydale. What actually happened? Did you all have to move to classrooms at Abbeydale or did some stay in the classrooms at Grange? And why did it happen? Falling numbers? If the huts were still there in the 80s it wasn't because they were falling down. I'd completely forgotten about Mrs Vernon in the sewing room. And Miss Secker in the Domestic Science room next door (was it?).

And yes Dinkie, I too remember Speech Day at the Victoria Hall and Jerusalem with Miss Rogers. So many people here and on Friends Reunited seem only to talk of Miss Williams, her successor. When Jerusalem is sung, I still hear Miss Rogers counting the beats to the start of the second verse - "One, two, three, four, five, BRING me my bow...."

Dinkie
23-09-2010, 18:41
yes Miss Secker was there doing Domestic Science as we called it then. I took "O" level DS
and passed!

As far as I know, the merger was all part of the restructuring of education and the end of the grammar schools which sheffield brought in in the 70's. We became a comprehensive and as our old (much loved and unique) site became the sixth form centre, I was at least spared the indignity of moving into enemy territory. A new uniform was introduced but most of the Grange girls hung onto their old ones until they fell apart. The new one was a variation on the navy theme and much closer to the Abbeydale uniform. I think the old girl's school became the Upper school and the boy's school on Hastings Rd became the Lower.
And i don't think it's coincidence that I'm suddenly acutely aware of my grammar and punctuation while writing this!!

Just one last point. My mum went to the school when it was Hurlfield. I once had a textbook which had her name in it on a label hidden by layers of subsequent ones. Imagine any of that happening today! (Do they have books.......??)

I went to Grange from 1965-1970. So sad that those beautiful old houses have gone. Teachers who stick in my mind are Miss Williams (music) Miss Longmuir (French) and Miss Ruff (English). Miss Knaish or Naish (history) and Mrs Senior (art). Who remembers the 'sacred' bowling green?

You live in a very beautiful part of the world and not far from your origins.
We must have crossed paths at school and your daughter and my niece and nephew, my sister stayed closer to home, Dore, whilst I married an Australian and have lived in Sydney for over 40 yrs.
I have lost contact with everyone from school;but would enjoy a chat with anyone who remembers the wonderful education we received there.

I have never learned to swim even after 40 odd years in Australia after those lessons at King Teds. Always assumed they were trying to drown us. My Australian husband thinks I should ask for compensation from Ed dept.
travelling in the bay of the trams was fun especially is we went up to the stop before school and hid on the floor when we got to the school.
Was that honest???
