View Full Version : Night Walk 30th October - Now Cancelled

Hi folks

After chatting with a few of the regulars it would seem there's quite a bit of interest in doing a late night to early morning walk. So am happy to organise and run one.

The walk will be approx 9-10 miles long and will start at Fox House heading to Longshaw Estate-White edge-Baslow edge-Curbar edge-Frogatt edge-Tegness-Longshaw estate finishing back at Fox house.

Walk will be on a Friday night, meeting at Fox house at around 2100 first for a drink and pos food for those who wish and starting the actually walk(legless or not) between 2200 and 2300.. And finishing between 0500 and 0600. So allowing those who used public transport to come along and then get home.

The walk it's self is general easy going BUT will be some what more adventurous under night conditions as am sure you all will understand..

You will all need a few extra clothing items to keep warm during the night a headlamp and would also suggest bring a flask with a hot drink or a stove etc to make one.

DATE IS NOW SET TO 30th of October...

For those attending if you don't have a headlamp I have loads spare, So please if you need one just ask...

regards
Lohtse

For anyone considering buying a headtorch in the near future you should take a look at the Alpkit ones.
http://www.alpkit.com/gamma/
Top piece of kit, inexpensive compared to the Petzl ones etc and from a company whos customer service is second to none.
I need to order another as i left mine on top of my mates car after a night walk over the great ridge though i have a spare if i can make this walk.

Ps, i have no link to the company.

As Eclair was the keenest person to want to do this walk, it's only fair to fit it around when she can get. Be best not to change it just for my benefit, but if there's a date which also suits Eclair, then yes I'll put my name down!

I would have put my name down as, I know for sure, that it would bring back memories of my many night navigational exercises with the forces.

Unfortunately, I cannot attend as it clashes with a charity halloween ball that I've organised. My pressence is required elsewhere.

Well, here we go again with a dilemna. Who's going to be disappointed?
Firstly though, what's wrong with Friday 13th? Come on, it's only a date.
Secondly, if anyone should miss out it's me, cos I said I wasn't interested in the first place, so to be honest, I'd rather it be put back to the original date and us miss out, than someone who'd got their name down first.
Not sure which weeks Eclaire can make it though, cos I couldn't understand her post

After discussing it, BM and myself will only go on this one if it can be arranged for a date that Hemlock, Eclaire, Lohtse and anyone else who's put their names down in the first instance can get, so if that means putting it back to 29th October, we'd rather you do that. We'll go on the next one instead!

i am so difficult i can only make the following week which is the 6th November, due to a trip to scarborough and other things on it is possibly really hard to work round me as i only have every other weekend. keep it at that date you cannot keep moving dates for a couple of people.

Hemlock
14-10-2009, 16:49
Well, we seem to be in a stalemate position over the date of this walk - no-one wants to make a decision about when it is.
i suggest that if Scoobz, Billysmum & lohtse can all make it on 6th November when eclaire can go, then make it then. If not, then whichever date is best for everyone else - 30th October or 20th November.
Ball in your court!

That's it folks..... Am having a paddy and stomping my feet.... :P Will return to original date(hemlock please change etc) If you wish to do the walk only place you names if YOU CAN DEFINITELY MAKE IT.....

If you need a headlamp let me know and also have a few flasks people can borrow if they wish too..

i definetly want to do this.
At the moment my van is off the road needing repairs for the mot and i'm stuck in bed with man flu, if my van isn't sorted by then i'd be grateful of a lift from the city rd area or city centre.
Once my van is sorted i'd be happy to provide lifts for all the other walks, 6 seats.

This is the fourth such incident that I'm aware of (so there may be more)

We went out with the group in its infancy, but when it became evident that the rules any normal group of walkers would adhere to weren't present in this group, we chose to return to our own walks

This internet group was set up such that ANYBODY could do their own walks and report and post pics afterwards, discuss walking topics etc, but the emphasis shifted to one specific group of people posting only on walks arranged on the forum boards - so it's no longer the internet space it once was

Some of us make our own arrangements with other forumers these days ;)

What a shamebles.

Hi Megalithic,
Sorry your question wasn't answered sooner, but as this was a walk organised by an individual, not the Shamblers group, I personally did not have the answer to give you.

As for being welcomed to the meeting on Monday, as I and fellow walkers have said, anyone who is interested in the future of the group who has anything constructive to say, are most welcome. Bruno who will be chairing the meeting is a relative newcomer to the group and is not involved in its organisation, to ensure a degree of impartiality.

To an outsider the previous posts regarding the last walk may come across as petty, but the safety of a group of people on a walk has to be paramount. Whether the group that were on the walk on Sunday were actually in danger or not was not really the issue. The issue was that there are certain rules put in place to minimise the risk of potential dangers on a walk as far as possible. If people on a walk disregard these rules, then there is a serious problem that needs addressing to ensure that future walks are as risk free as possible. At the same time, if people perceive that the rules that are in place are fundamentally wrong, then this needs addressing too - hence the meeting.

As for it being a 'shambles', I think if you look at the wider picture, it is far from it. There was a problem on a walk, this was noted, and as soon as was humanly possible a meeting was set up to try to re-look at the rules and safety measures we do have in place to ensure we enjoy our walks in as safe a manner as we can.

This is a group in its infancy that is evolving, & as with any group or organisation, there will be problems that need addressing. It would be a 'shambles' if we ignored these problems & pretended everything was hunky dory. We haven't done that, we have acknowledged this, hence the meeting.

I am also positive that the outcome will make the group a much stronger and better group than it was before. Then we can get back to what we do best - enjoying the social aspect of being on a walk with a group of friends & having a jolly good laugh. This is what the Shamblers is supposed to be about - the emphasis being on the social side of things. Although we try to arrange the odd challenging walk, anyone wanting regular physically challenging fast-paced walks would be better either joining another group or organising their own.

I hope this helps to put everything into perspective for you, and I look forward to eventually meeting you at last! :D

Hi Strix,
I think your first point is very valid, when you went walking with the group, (pre my time) this is what it was - a group in its infancy without any rules.
It was acknowledged that this needed addressing, hence the birth of the Shamblers, who have tried to put some common-sense rules in place to make the walks as safe as we can, without taking away the essential fun side of things. It was because these common-sense rules that were put in place for everyone's safety did not seem to be adhered to, that we are re-addressing these rules again so we can evolve as a group.

There will be at least 2 very experienced walkers at our meeting who will be offering us their expert advice, & this advice will hopefully help to ensure that all future walks are as safe as possible.

Also, this internet group is still used for anyone to set up & discuss their own walks - this thread being a perfect example of that. Anyone is free to post anything walk related they want. Giving our group a name was an attempt to distinguish this group from anyone else who wishes to post on here - making it clearer for people flicking through which are our organised walks & which are not.

I'm glad you have found a group of friends that you are happy walking with, enjoying walking with a group of friends is what its all about:thumbsup:
