View Full Version : Fishing trips from Ladys Bridge 1960 to Lincolnshire tony.p 11-10-2009, 05:07 can anybody remember fishing trips on sunday morning with jeffcox(?) coaches at ladys bridge opposite tennets brewery CHAIRBOY 11-10-2009, 09:47 I wasn't a fisherman but can confirm what you write. I think the coach firm was Jeffcocks but I can recall those Sunday mornings about 5.30am. I'd be coming back from a London away game and station approach to Victoria station would be thronged with anglers going to places such as Bardney, Tattershall, Dogdyke etc - hope I've got those right? This would be 1960+ and I guess the coaches ran as well as the trains, such was the sport's popularity then. I suspect that like the horseracing excursions, ten years on and people had their own cars to travel in. Just thought of Saxilby - they were all places on the River Witham. skippy 11-10-2009, 11:30 I think most coach companies used to take fishermen to the Licolnshire fishing spots during the 50's, although I wasn't a fisherman, I remember going on a coach or sharra as we called them in those days, with a mate and fishing at some place called the Little 40 foot, which was in Lincolnshire somewhere. phantom309 11-10-2009, 17:45 Most of them ran from castle gate several coach firms including Jeffcocks and SUT as already posted and you could pay the driver if all the seats were not booked and they used to leave at different times like 5-30 for Wisbech up to 7-00 for Torksey and Laneham Ferry verona 13-10-2009, 14:17 They were still doing them late 80's early 90's. I remember going on one of the trips and getting the coach from Ladys Bridge, opposite Calcotts fishing tackle shop. DUFFEMS;5531742we also enjoyed a crate or two on the way home, after a session in the pub and I remember falling asleep to the sounds of the Black and White Minstrel Show on the bus radio when we didn't miss the bus!! PhilipB 30-10-2009, 09:01 Spent many a Sunday on these trips. Who remembers having to give up their seat so that some grown up could have it then have to spend 2 hours sat on a basket in the aisle? Used to stop in Sleaford for a bacon butty. Happy days. mikeG 30-10-2009, 15:35 Was in a pub in Spilsby last year and bumped into a dozen or so anglers from Sheffield. They may well have been on a coach trip. Don't know what the river is round there - wife will, she comes from near there. discovery 30-10-2009, 23:15 Did any of you fish in the Sibsey Trader next to Fixter's Bridge Farm Caravan site? boston 31-10-2009, 08:00 Did any of you fish in the Sibsey Trader next to Fixter's Bridge Farm Caravan site? Not as many fishing the Trader now as was in the 60/70s. The Coach Stop sign is still there for the SUT coach outside Fixters. Some fishing stagings were also built a few years ago. The section from the road bridge to the old iron foot bridge (now wood) is not supposed to be fished at all now, yet some guys were live baiting in this section this week From memory i think one of the SUT coaches called at Tattershall Bridge, Chapel Hill, Hubberts Bridge, Malcolm Arms, Cowbridge, and then on to the Trader hillsbro 31-10-2009, 08:27 I wasn't a fisherman but can confirm what you write. I think the coach firm was Jeffcocks ... going to places such as Bardney, Tattershall, Dogdyke etc - hope I've got those right?... My goodness, CHAIRBOY, that brings back memories. Bardney, Tattershall and Dogdyke on the Witham, and Saxilby on the Fossdyke Navigation - all good fishing spots. Jeffcocks were noted for their fishing trips, and they served all the favourite waters in Lincolnshire. Law Brothers also ran an "Ely Express" service every Saturday with their smart green-and-white coaches that went to Ely via Swineshead/Hubberts Bridge, Forty Foot, Wisbech etc. discovery 01-11-2009, 11:36 Not as many fishing the Trader now as was in the 60/70s. I quite like Boston - used to love the open air swimming pool when we were kids, always used to go there when we were down in Sibsey. Have you seen the man made lake they have built onto the back of Bridge Farm Caravan site? I went to have a look at it when I was down in August, I'm not a fisher person but I could see it was well stocked, plenty of fish coming up to the surface and one of the guys fishing, confirmed it is well stocked. Nodens 01-11-2009, 13:43 Me and my Dad used to go regularly on those trips from Castlegate in the late 50's and early 60's. First with Jeffcock's and then I believe they were taken over by Sheffield United Tours - nothing to do with the blunts I believe. We used to get our tickets from an office down some steps in a building on Waingate, later on they had an SUT office down in Pond St. bus station. We used to fish the Trent usually at Dunham Bridge. |
