View Full Version : New fishmonger in Hunters Bar offtheshelf 09-10-2009, 14:23 Any feedback ? Pook 09-10-2009, 14:34 had some fantastic coley from there last week. Red snapper i wasn't too keen on this week, but that's just a personal preference thing. Very friendly blokes work there. Recommended. girlwiththeb 09-10-2009, 14:38 I got some pollock. Really nice and a good selection of fish, organic veg and sauces. mughead 09-10-2009, 14:40 is it expensive? Kthebean 09-10-2009, 14:41 Is it open at the weekend does anyone know? Bertielil 09-10-2009, 14:52 Discovered this on Wednesday, after reading here that one had opened. It's on Sharrowvale Road, the opposite side to Roney's Butchers and a bit nearer to The Lescar. They have another shop in Hillsborough which I remember as a child, used to go in with my Grandmother. The display of fish and shellfish is spectacular and the price per kilo is chalked up on a huge board on the left hand wall. I bought cod, trout, crab and smoked haddock (not the neon sort, although that was on offer as well). The guy behind the counter couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. I have always used Boldock's at Woodseats, however, I found parking a whole lot easier at Sharrowvale plus, I didn't have to spend ages in some horrendous traffic queue along Chesterfield Road. girlwiththeb 09-10-2009, 15:28 I found it reasonably priced and it was open on a saturday. They also get stuff in for you if you order ahead. chefkicker 09-10-2009, 15:40 I found it reasonably priced and it was open on a saturday. They also get stuff in for you if you order ahead. What are the opening hours? Do they do reduced prices on stock theyre trying to get rid of ;) I generally rush to the supermarkets to see what reduced fish i can get hold of. :D shanes teeth 09-10-2009, 16:54 What are the opening hours? Bertielil 09-10-2009, 17:19 Not sure what time they open, but the guy there told me they close at 5.oopm. Halibut 09-10-2009, 17:28 This is a new venture by that very highly regarded Hillsborough fishmonger JH Mann Ltd - they're under fairly new ownership, but they still offer outstanding service and first class produce. Chefkicker - don't be such a tightwad! There are lots of things worth buying cheaply if they're a little less than fresh or top quality, but fish isn't one of them. Go for quality every time... boutiquechoc 20-10-2009, 12:19 If you are all referring to JH Mann on Sharrowvale Rd, I noticed it on Saturday and popped in (my usual fishmonger is Baldocks in Woodseats) but I was that end of town so thought it would be quicker to use this one and I wanted to see if JH Mann rivalled my usual fishmongers. Boy was I disappointed!........ Found the place to be odd: Too big for starters. Flies everywhere even though they had a door thingybob up, there were flies landing on the fish and not one of the serving men did anything about it. It didn't look nice & clean as I expected as I heard rave reviews about the one in Hillsborough. The prices wern't that great either, and there was a lack of choice of fish (plenty written about on the boards but hardley anything displayed) They had no scallops left other than a watery mess in a plastic tub - and this was about 1.30pm on a Saturday! Not good. There were two men serving in there, one with the worst sexist humour I have ever known. Mr - you aint funny so quit trying! I won't be using this fishmongers again! I bought squid, salmon, sea bass and some other things, the salmon was very fresh (which is only to be expected anyway from a fishmongers) but on the whole I thought it was a crappy fishmongers. Mr Baldock at Woodseats gets my vote over JH Mann! Baldocks is fresh, quality, clean and always served with a smile!!! missymarsbar 25-10-2009, 16:49 That' odd, as I went in last week, are we talking about the same place? Lovely shop. Fish was excellent. I don't have to buy rubbish fish from supermarkets now. Bertielil 25-10-2009, 18:32 Mmmmm, Just wondering if Boutiquechoc is related, has shares in, in a relationship, works etc (Boldocks). I have used them for years (25, at least) and will continue. However, as mentioned in my previous post, parking and traffic on Woodseats is a nightmare. It is also lovely to have an excellent alternative. Have used Mann's 3 times now, always top notch and as for the so called "sexist" guy, he's a hoot. Stop taking yourself so seriously Boutiquechic. tailgunner 09-11-2009, 16:21 If you are all referring to JH Mann on Sharrowvale Rd, I noticed it on Saturday and popped in (my usual fishmonger is Baldocks in Woodseats) but I was that end of town so thought it would be quicker to use this one and I wanted to see if JH Mann rivalled my usual fishmongers. It isn't about 'being serious' it is about being a customer who will take their business elsewhere. I was embarrassed by the man's 'jokes and suggestions', but what does that matter eh? my custom? my word of mouth? I don't have any affiliation with Baldocks other than as a customer. Baldocks are so much better in quality, price and personality than this fishmongers in Sharrow, which as I posted, I found very poor in value, choice, cleanliness and the other issues I had previously written about. I bought 1kg squid from JH Mann which costs £10. It was £6.80 in Baldocks. An alternative is good for everyone but in this case I will stick to my usual fishmonger, and if parking issues put you off then it puts you off. buff primer 10-01-2010, 19:44 I have found it hit and miss, some really good stuff but I've seen fish in there that I wouldn't give the cat it was so not fresh, milky eyes and green round the gills. I guess the more people use it, the more quickly stock will get turned around and it will be nicer for everyone! Won't be me using it though, I find the market is better as you can check out all the stalls before working out who is best today. Anyway, if I go there I will just end up going home with something from 2 steps anyway. tailgunner 13-01-2010, 14:46 have you been in quite a few times? not_realy_me 14-01-2010, 14:06 I agree its good to have a fishmongers here Im amazed its taken so long I really liked it when it opened but Im convinced hes put his prices up since the end of November - which is basic business I suppose if a bit cheeky now that hes established Also agree that it can be patchy and sometimes feel like they are doing me a favour in taking my money! On balance I'll stick with Ecclesall fisheries on Silver Hill He doesnt have the same selection but is always pleased to see you tailgunner 14-01-2010, 17:32 I agree its good to have a fishmongers here Im amazed its taken so long I really liked it when it opened but Im convinced hes put his prices up since the end of November - which is basic business I suppose if a bit cheeky now that hes established Also agree that it can be patchy and sometimes feel like they are doing me a favour in taking my money! On balance I'll stick with Ecclesall fisheries on Silver Hill He doesnt have the same selection but is always pleased to see you the chaps that work in the shop are so helful and i guess they want to make people fell as welcome as possible.the prices of fish change all the time and he tries not to buy farmed and endagered fish as mch as possible.im sure they will sort the prices out whenever they can. lubylou 16-01-2010, 09:03 There were two men serving in there, one with the worst sexist humour I have ever known. Mr - you aint funny so quit trying! I know the guy who you mean, i know a couple of women who shop at the Hillsborough shop, they ring the shop first to see if he is serving, if so, they go later when he,s not there. Its pretty bad really if the staff are keeping the customers away with there attitudes, been pushy and sexist. tailgunner 25-01-2010, 20:34 There were two men serving in there, one with the worst sexist humour I have ever known. Used to use the one up in bannercross, top of eccy road, but they seem to have a limited supply. They got me in some Mackerel the other day, fresh, affordable, versitile. I disagree about the hygiene issue, its spotless in there, and Im comparing this to kitchens I have worked it. Great lads in there, very chatty, and great knowledge of fish and how to cook it if you need any tips. Would highly reccomend |
