View Full Version : IT Job Decision to make

Ok, so I'm in the fortunate position of having to decide between 2 similar IT roles with 2 very different companies.

One's a leading ISP, the other a large multinational outsourcing firm. Both roles have similar pay and benefits and are senior positions.

However, current employer is also a big corporate and thats one of my reasons for wanting to go (although the potential new corporate one came across well this could just be a recruitment smokescreen!) but would I be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire ???

Any IT bod's out there with experience of working for an ISP etc ?

Welcome any thoughts :)

Hmm. I guess the ISP is Plusnet and the other company EDS.

Freeserve then.
I had an interview with them a while ago, seems like a nice place to work.

Plusnet would be a definite no, had an interview there, they seemed really odd.

EDS - Definitely not, worst reputation of any IT consultancy in the country, and not undeserved.

Yes, well done Nomme, its Wanadoo (nee Freeserve). Its EDS that I'll be leaving :D

CSC is the other option.

A weekend of weighing up the pro's and con's of each beckons.

Were you unlucky and didn't get the job or did you choose something else at the time ?

didn't get the offer at wanadoo (ps - it was me, not nomme). Csc have a mixed rep, but i'd guess the work for you would be much the same as at eds, if done a little better.

Just curious, but why are you leaving EDS (PM me if you prefer) I was on the lookout for a job there for my daughter. She's currently working in Leeds but has been overlooked for promotion recently and is looking for somewhere she can progress.

I went for an interview at EDS and after about half an hour I decided I realy didn't want to work there, no matter how much they were willing to pay me. It seemed very controlling, old fashioned and a bit grim.

as an ex-Wanadoo employee I'd advise anyone against it - esp. as the Leeds site is being closed within 18 months and the work transferred out to Mumbai in stage 2 - late 2006 of the plan.

IMHO you will have better opportunities in either CSC or EDS, both are worldwide outscourcing companies, and are taking on new contracts all the time.

Freeserve have limited growth opportunities.

EDS are steadily loosing market share, revenue and money everywhere except America. They have a terrible reputation and are only staying afloat through constantly failing to deliver government contracts for which they pay a fortune.

Their management style seems to be archaic and staff moral is extremely low.

Doesn't sound like somewhere i'd like to work.
