The have followed the major supermarkets and adopted the ridiculous system of scanning your own books. As in the supermarket, everything would be fine if it worked ... my thought is that they end up losing a lot of stock as people fail to scan the items. I say, bring back the service counter. I know we've talked about this on another thread, Sedith, but self-issuing is, I'm afraid, here to stay. It was only a matter of time before Sheffield caught up with Norfolk Libraries & other authorities. It is a way of reducing staff numbers at a time when library services all over the country are being closed. I suppose the choice was self-issuing or close branches. I agree with you that it's awful & most of the library staff naturally think so too. However, I can't see staff being put back on issuing and discharging. Surplus staff will (we hope) disappear through natural wastage and not compulsory redundancy. In the meantime, they will be used as "floorwalkers" who will walk around asking people if they need any help. What an appalling degradation of what was once the best public library system in the world and the fore-runner of all of them. rudds1 01-08-2011, 09:08 Has anyone had the misfortune to use the new lending system at Crystal Peaks Library. As in the supermarket, everything would be fine if it worked ... my thought is that they end up losing a lot of stock as people fail to scan the items. I say, bring back the service counter. They also have this system in Ecclesall Library, it works OK, even the older generation are coming to terms with it as it's easy to use, easier than self-scanning in supermarkets. When I asked at Ecclesall if this meant reduced staff I was told that their numbers aren't to be affected by the new system. sedith 01-08-2011, 09:13 I know we've talked about this on another thread, Sedith, but self-issuing is, I'm afraid, here to stay. What an appalling degradation of what was once the best public library system in the world and the fore-runner of all of them. As with the supermarkets, self scanning/issuing is clearly ineffective and needs constant monitoring. If staff are employed as floorwalkers, where is the money being saved? To me, this seems a fastrack in closing the city Libraries as a large percentage of borrowers are 60+ and will struggle to use the self issuing system. Out of interest, how are the DVD/CD's issued, surely not putting the rental fee in a honesty box? BarryRiley 01-08-2011, 11:23 If staff are employed as floorwalkers, where is the money being saved? 1 floor walker per 6 self-checkouts rather than 6 staff per 6 tills. Simple sedith 01-08-2011, 11:30 1 floor walker per 6 self-checkouts rather than 6 staff per 6 tills. Simple Not at Crystal Peaks ... same amount of staff and three women looking after two self issue checkouts! Mark my words, they'll have no stock left by the end of the year! |
