The title is supposed to be:
'3 Sheffield United connections in FourFourTwo's 100 wealthiest people in British football'

The list in full: http://fourfourtwo.com/lists/richlist200910thefull100.aspx

79. Michael McDonald - £28m

Sheffield United Age 66, last year £25m (73rd)
The former managing director of Texas Holdings, the Eccles-based engineering to property and scrap metal group, McDonald retains a large stake, and his family and trusts own all the company. In 2008, the company made a small loss but showed nearly £25m net assets.
McDonald is best known for his involvement with Sheffield United. Though he is no longer on the board, he retains a small stake worth around £1m. With a further £2m of stakes in quoted companies added, the McDonald family is easily worth £28m.

61. Andrew Laver - £40m

Sheffield United Age 43, last year £40m (56th)
In December 2007, Yorkshire Bank backed a takeover of Sheffield-based timber company Arnold Laver by its management team. The business, which had been owned by family trusts, was sold for an undisclosed sum though press reports put its value at £50m.
Laver's family have had a long association with Sheffield United and he has a stake of just under 1% in the Blades, worth £272,000. In the year to June 2008, it made a £6.4m profit on £111m sales; with £60m net assets, £50m doesn't seem over-inflated. We value the Laver family on its proceeds from the sale and Andrew Laver's continued stake.

33. Kevin McCabe - £175m

Sheffield United Age 61, last year £200m (30th)
The secret of selling, just as it is with comedy, is timing. Blades chairman Kevin McCabe, a surveyor by trade, sold his Scarborough Property operation just before the crash for over £800m. His cut would have been £150m.
Born close to Bramall Lane, he has other interests such as a serviced office outfit with £58m of assets. Stripping out tax and debt we say McCabe is worth £175m.

Wasn't MacDonald involved in something dodgy? The reason there was no John Street for a while?

Are you getting him mixed up with MIKE BREALEY and his far east companies?

Never heard of this bloke.

I did a bit of work in a Planning Consultant in the summer and the Director was a Blade. Sure he mentioned the name MacDonald, when we were talking about the John Street Stand.

Good old Reg, knocked the John St stand down and couldn't afford to re build it :)

Brealey was allegedly a wanted man in Indian for human rights violations (under age kids working and sleeping in his factory out there).

He then had a big slanging match with Woolhouse (who still on the run from Interpol), Stephen Hincliffe (another ex director / chairman) did time for tax evation and however knows what happend to Carlo Columbotti (the Italian business man who wanted to be Paolo Maldini in as Manager :) ) - Pig fans bitch about Allen but dear oh dear, it really was a laugh a minute down at the Lane at one point, these fella's make Dave Allen look like Mary Poppins.

But the Blades have got it sorted now, and what a rollercoaster ride it has been.

I think thats why Blades who went through that era are grateful for what we've got now.

It was a right sham when Brealy was at the Lane, though he did initially do a lot of good the Pigs at the council held him back when he wanted to develop the Lane and the surounding area's into a pedestrianised shopping area.

I look at the ground now and it's a million mile away from where it was in the late 80's, i do still miss the West End of the John St Terrace though :)

As I recall it the stand was already down when MacDonald came in, he wasn’t happy with the plans and that was the reason for the delay in rebuilding it.

Yes it wasn't half cold when the wind blew through there.
Wait while the kop roof comes off.
A good Idea would be to move the Kop ticket holders to the lane end top and bottom and give the open cold Kop to the away fans.

Ah ok. I remember sitting on the Cherry Street stand when there was no John St with my Dad and Uncle - never ever been so cold.

Yep I can remember when the ball would be accidentally :suspect: kicked over the fence which wasted plenty of time in the days before ball rotation.

That is a fair point. But United fans are laughing at Wednesday still, but we're probably at where you were when McCabe came in and we're still not far off United. This is why I'm happy we've got Strafford in, he's beginning to sort the club out.

Random point, but I had my first ever Bovril at Bramall Lane. Needed summat to warm me up due to the wind coming from John St. I associate Bovril with United now, random I know:D

Until United are an established Premiership club, there's not much between either club. If we got promoted, financially we'd be sound again.

How do you work that out?
How many premier clubs struggle skint.
How much will the wage bill go up.
The debts will still have to be paid.
Promotion can ruin a club like it did wednesday last time.

Ah but Strafford ain't going to let that happen. We'd spend within our means.
One season without spending much, would wipe the debt out and then we'd have a clean slate. We're one of the few clubs to make a profit.

You're hoping there - if your fans get a whiff of promotion and go up, they'll be pressing the board to spend big to keep you up there, not just clear the debts...

Alty your loyalty to Strafford is admirable. BUT wake up and smell the roses:)

Do you have a clue how to clear a £25m debt? the club is treading water at best. 18,700 gates will not help. Your icon needs 25,000 paying supporters.

If Weds form dips before xmas the gates will fall even lower, of course that could be said of United. But financially can cope with a potential 10% drop in attendance. Weds can not.

Clever accounting over the past 2 years showed a small profit for the Owls. But even the most optimistic Owl realises the debt is massive and can only be cleared by a major takeover or administration. Something seems amiss( in my opinion) in the accounting stakes in S6, or surely someone would have come forward by now.

Back to the thread 3 present or past directors in the top football rich list is impressive. Another claim to fame over the Owls.:)

Yes you have but it doesn't mean your right.
Your comment "we would spend within our means" and pay off the debt, would likely lead to relegation.
