This PC has not been used much over the last few weeks since the storm appeared to have blown the modem. We since (and now) use another.

The old one on starting dislays (along with other things) 'CMOS checksum error'

F! to continue
Del to enter set-up

Set up offers 'Standard CMOS features' which APPEARS to be date /time settings.

F1 will start up PC APPARENTLY as normal, but when shutting down after 'Windows is closing down' as usual 'It is now safe to switch off your computer' is shown. Which MUST be done at mains switch.

Starting up require no ScanDisk.

Don't understand what's going off.

Any ideas please in simple language?

Get a new battery for the CMOS.

I had this happen on an old machine (about 1-10 years old it was). New battery, no more problems;).

This is down to the ACPI settings. Check the relevant area in the BIOS and then in Windows:

Right Click on the desktop
Click PROPERTIES
Click SCREEN SAVER tab
Click POWER button
Click the ACPI tab
Put a tick in the box
