Has anyone ever been to eat at Canton Orchard on Fulwood Road?

I am planning to go next week but wanted opinions about the place i.e. if the food/service is good.

Thanks!

I Ying.
I have been once when I first moved here. It's a lovely building - the service was good. Evereyone wolfed everything down as they couldn't bear to leave any (boring me doesn't like the food much, so can't rave on about anything in particular - but everyone else does).
So hope you enjoy it as much as my ex-colleagues did.

The first time it was great. Expensive, but really good quality food.

The second time I went it was Chinese New Year and it was very disappointing! It's the first time I've ever seen a table of 9 people finish a complete banquet with nothing left (not even the stir fried vegetables)! Most of us were still hungry too. Now, they were busy, but that shouldn't have affected the portion sizes. We paid good money and got below average sized portions.

Having said that, I'd definitely go again.

Well after reading the good reviews on this forum we decided to go last night (28-11-08) with my girlfriends parents who were staying the night. As soon as we walked in we were shocked at how poor the decor was! It reminded me of youth hostels I stayed in when I was younger. The manager was slightly quirky which we brushed off before sitting at our table.
For our first course we ordered the bbq spare ribs, crab claw and king prawn parcels - after receiving them, they could only be described as processed meat. You couldn't taste the difference between the prawns and the crab claws; a chewy jelly like substance.
We also ordered half a crispy duck. When this arrived it was already shredded which is strange as the waiter should usually shred it in front of you. We asked the manager why it was preshredded and he said it was a different style and nothing was wrong. However, on tasting it It was like no duck I had ever had before and it wasn’t good. You couldn’t tell what meat it was.
We thought enough was enough, and asked that they didn't bring us any more food and we'd settle up. The manager (aka Basil Fawlty) didn't ask what was wrong, but tried to quietly usher us outside where he proceed to argue with us about what we were paying for on the bill. He was very rude to my girlfriend and her mother, pointing his pen right in her face and shouting!
Well, it made for a very entertaining evening - fortunately Bann Thai had a spare table for us straight away and it was lovely as usual.

We went a couple of weeks ago. I didn't post about it at the time because I didn't know where to begin. I'll add more later when I've more time.

The manager . . . where do you start.

Went a few weeks ago and it was as good quality as ever. I've never had any problems with the place - but of course, other people can have entirely different experiences.

we went last night, food was not to the usuall standard, but it looked like there were a few issues in the kitchen. We had to send away two lots of food we did not order, and my main course looked like it had be whacked together sharpish and cooked very if not too fast. We had the usuall banter with the manager, who I allways find a pleasure to talk to.
I did notice they seem to have simplified the menu, there was lots of the really good dishes missing from it last night.

I would not go near this place. We have been many times and it started out as an excellent place, but each time we visited standards slipped.
I am a little afraid of posting for fear of reprisals.

We went for a large group meal and had to have a set menu. It wasn't cheap. There wasn't enough food for the people there, the veggies were starving. We had deep fried starters, some vile mush instead of mock duck and then some stir fried monstrosity. The meat eaters didn't fare much better. The duck was dried out, a shrivelled mess. The main courses weren't enough to feed half the group.

At each stage we made our complaints known. When we tried to make a complaint at the end the manager on the night was very aggressive; but hadn't given us a choice to order from the menu.

This was really shocking and I was very surprsised.

Oh and the toilets smell of damp, they don't flush properly and they never ever have sufficient loo roll.

Stay away.

to continue . . .

We were placed at our table. The manager and a waitress then spent ten minutes directly behind us talking loudly about what another table had ordered and then went on to the staff rota.

Half-way through the meal, and this is where Basil Faulty came into his own, a group of old customers from London walked past the large window. Cue basil, running to the window, banging on it, and shouting "Hello! Hello!" and so on through the window at the top of his voice.

And the food was bog standard Chinese crap. In other words, Chinese food that no Chinese person would eat.

I know what you're saying but it must be remembered that there is also Chinese food that no non-Chinese person could eat...

It is a pity that the Canton Orchard appears to be having difficulties; despite the plain food, I have enjoyed the place on may occasions in the past and enjoyed the banter with the (admittedly quite eccentric) manager. I hope that it returns to form soon - old school chinglish food!

We had a dreadful meal there at least five years ago, utterly appalling from the decor to the food and everything else inbetween. I've always thought it odd that people said such good things about it, it had no redeeming features at all.

It does seem to be run more as a hobby than a business. I wonder if the restaurant is a front for something more sinister? :suspect:

Been twice, maybe thrice and have never been impressed.

The food seems to be dry, the service incredibly poor (and they don't like receiving complaints) and the organisation lacking.

Save your money and visit a buffet instead. I promise you won't be as disappointed.*

I'm surprised the Canton Orchard has lasted as long as it has.

* Better still, Won Ting in town is always full of chinese folk. Superb place. And the staff and management don't have chips on their shoulders like they do at Zing Vaa.

I've been twice and while I've certainly eaten better Chinese food at other restaurants, have been fairly impressed by the diverse menu and relatively reasonable prices. Last time I had the scallops in black bean sauce and it was superb.

I have just been back to the Canton Orchard for the first time in several months and expected to have the usual pleasant time with slightly disappointing food. I was wrong - we had a pleasant time but with great food! I think that the kitchen has had some changes. The starters were good, with squid cooked to soft perfection for once. The mains were just delicious - very tender beef in black bean sauce, fiery pork with chillis and, best of all, duck with crispy skin, melting fat and juicy meat. The best chinese food I have had since I was last in HK.

The interior looks to have been spruced up and the manager (although occasionally Fawltyesque) was a perfect host. I would suggest a re-visit for those who have been disappointed in the past.

Been a couple of times nothing special considering how much they charge, for me from now on it will be the Dim Sum on London Road, absolutely first class, puts all other chinese/ cantonese places to shame.

went last night, it was ok but nothing too special, portions a bit small though, but we were more or less the only customers in. And yes, the owner is a Basil Fawlty (chinese version) and does run about waving his arms a lot.......service was FAIR but not very fast, the rice for 4 ordered was barely enough for 2 though.......portions and service could be better....no background music at all did nothing for the atmos though, although the building has a run down charm to it, and is badly in need of a total refurb if it wants to attract the 'Executive' crowds, which it is aimed at with its menu prices...

Am tempted to go here for my Wife's birthday next month as she loves Chinese.

Has anyone had any recent experiences and has it improved at all? Going on these posts I think I might well stay away!

I would also like to hear some recent feedback about the place. Just moved to Ranmoor and after having the most amazing Chinese meal delivered from Wok This Way the other night, I thought I would take things to the next level. From the earlier comments in this thread I think I'll hold out for a while.

Wok This Way is impressive and doesn't cost the earth.

I simply do not see the attraction - if there is one - of Canton Orchard.

Stick with the former IMO.

Wong Ting seemed to have fallen on the wayside in standards...the dim sum were cold and tough, the staff was rude...
Dim Sum on London Road has excellent dimsum food, but their ala carte menu/dishes were only ordinary, their Singapore noodles were choking with curry powder.

Try Pho 68...they do an amazing combi of Chinese Vietnamese/Malaysian food that is quite remarkably good. And definitely value for money as well! As you can see I'm quite a fan of theirs, having been in almost every week with my boyfriend, and the service is always friendly and polite.

Went in the other night at about 9pm. Nearly empty. Ignored for about 10 minutes. Then told it was "a bit late to eat".

Rescued the night by walking over to Panahar where they were glad to serve us.

Canton Orchard looks lovely from the outside, it felt cold and miserable inside.

I've not been for a while. Heard it was a 'classy' restaurant - came away disappointed with the food, the service and the whole experience to be honest. Best part of the visit was the pre meal pint at the Ranmoor Inn! Won't be returning - not awful, but simply not good enough.

That's ridiculous, but very funny. Is it a restaurant or isn't it? I don't get it.

One wonders why this place is still in business. It seems to have been not very good and not very busy for several years. It can't be much of an earner. They would make a fortune if they sold up and it was turned into the inevitable block of 'apartments' (flats).

I've been a couple of times, I always remember the waiter being a bit like Basil Fawlty and the food being average and the service haphazard to say the least.

When I want a nice Chinese I always go to China Rose in Bawtry. 10/10 every time.

Me and my family used to go to Canton Orchard alot years ago but stopped going once every food we ordered were too salty. The manager back then was nice. Anyone recommend going? I want to see if its changed from about 8-9 years ago. If so, any dishes in particular? I need to get out of my usual chinese dishes i order from noodle inn and dim sum!( They do good food for affordable prices as im sure many of you will know!)

I am a regular visitor to the Canton Orchard and think it is great and always a delight, i understand some people have had some bad experiences but hope this does not put other people off coming to this place. I love the food here, it is the tastiest chinese food Iv had in Sheffield, yes it is more expensive then the average chinese, but I think it is well worth it.

The decor has character, a charming manor house like theme. The manager is always friendly, charming and generous everytime me and my family and friends go so really do not understand why there seem to be some negative reviews about him. Maybe you have to catch him on a good day ha!

I also found a recent article about this place this year that might interest people:
