Hi Peter,
yes they are fine as far as I can tell.
I have several domain names through them for a few years and I have never had any problems.

The set up is straight forward and everything is usually ready within 24hours.

Peter, I just read your original posting, and I only use their domain name services, I use my own Blueyonder webspace to host most of my webspace, which I pay monthly for advanced add ons to extend the capacity and some server side controls.

I host my site with 1and1 and have several domains registered with them too.

I'm happy with the hosting, no problems at all in the last 12 Months that I've been with them.

I've used their dedicated server option and have found the service to be quite good, although their billng dept sometimes needs a kick...

I used 1&1 in the past, and found their customer service to be somewhat lacking. I was having problems accessing my account, so clicked on the password reminder function, only to find that I needed my customer number. Fair enough, good security. However, trying to get something done to assist me was like getting blood out of a stone. It took 6 months, 5 letters, around 12 e-mails, 3 faxes, and 5 phone calls before I got anything done about it. When it was resolved I think it was more to do with the fact that I mentioned cancellation and legal advice as they were taking money off me for a service I was unable to use.

I sought a new host, and found that it was then made even harder to transfer the domain to my planned new host. 1&1 simply wouldn't release it! They then kept hold of it until the paid up period was ended, recharged me for another 2 years worth of hosting, and then took another 2 months refunding the charge (of which they only paid back 3/4 of it).

I would not recommend these to anyone! I don't care how cheap a company is, if the customer service is lacking then it just isn't worth it!

have to agree with beakerzoid - i also found cancelling to be a right royal pain & consequently have been harrassed for additional annula premiums 'cos i didn't cancel correctly. although how i managed on 2 seperate domains on consecutive years i'll never know.
i followed the instructions given first time to cancel 2nd time & they still charged me.

I would not touch them. Keep away. Their customer service and accounting department are the worsst I have ever come across from any company.

Each time you contact them they send you a survey asking you how good they have been. Even though no matter how you try to contact them; no matter how long you are sat waiting on a national rate call only to get someone who cannot answer your query and to speak to a supervisor you have to fax (that's right FAX); no matter how many faxes you send; no matter how many emails you send, no one ever, ever, ever comes back to you.

Their glossy adverts in all those magazine ought to carry a government health warning!

Heh...I wonder if they ready the multiple "How was our service" forms I filled in, and actually paid attention to them! By the end they just became simple "WHAT CUSTOMER SERVICE?!?!?! ALL YOU SEEM CAPABLE OF IS SENDING ME THESE BLOODY FORMS OUT!!!" or words to that effect!

I bought a domain from them a couple of years ago - it was only supposed to last 1 year. I'd forgotton when the date was up for it and couldn't find any documentation.
Then it came up on the credit card bill that they'd taken another load of money for it.
I emailed them telling them I wanted it cancelled and that I was rather annoyed they hadn't informed me to tell me the contract was ending and didn't ask if I wanted to renew it.
So they cancelled the domain, but kept the money. So I'd paid money for something I couldn't even access anymore!
I wrote a letter, but never got a reply. I often think I should chase it up, but it was so long ago now, I think it'd be fruitless...

I also had that problem about logging in, not having the password and having to find the customer number (luckily I still had the emails with it in). I also had the problem that if the domain name was entered, the page would refresh and come up with the site's original address for where it was hosted, but that might be because I have it on Tripod...

I'm currently looking for webhosting and am kind of considering 1&1, but obviously I am dubious as to whether they'll tell me the contract is ending and if I was just one person who had a bad experience with them - so it's good to read your opinions on here.

I have two sites hosted with 1 & 1.
I cant praise them enough, a fast and efficient service.

And the main thing for me.. over the past year, I have had no downtime at all!

Superb.

We have had a few customers from 1&1 most have seemed quite happy with them, we have had one customer that really fell out with them.

But there is always someone who finds something wrong with a webhost.

I used 1and1 's american service for a dedicated server last year, it had 100% uptime, thier service is/was great, even had decent pings for the UK (85ms alot of the time)

dont know about thier UK side though.
