View Full Version : Lost sports grounds
I am interested in compiling a list of sports grounds - particularly cricket and football - which have disappeared over the last fifty years or so. No doubt there are some grounds which belonged to businesses which have subsequently closed
Those that spring readily to mind include:
King Edwards playing fields at Whiteley Wood (now given over to horses!)
YMCA pitches on Crimicar Lane (altho these are now being returned to sporting use)
Crookes WMC (now houses)
Den Bank
The ground at the junction of Dore Road and the road to Owler Bar
There must be many many more.
The 2 pitches actually on Wadsley Common (not the old Sheffield Rangers)
THANK GOD
Runningman 05-10-2009, 13:57 Right hand side of Parkway going out of town, between Prince of Wales and Handsworth junctions.
Don't know what's on there now, but back in the 40's we'd walk to the Forum on Saturday mornings via the back of Firshill School towards Roe Woods, and the sloping ground going down to the woods proper, was the Atlas and Norfolk football pitch.
kenny.gray 05-10-2009, 18:48 intake wmc ground,british rail,little wembley,ball inn,

The old co-op dairy at the top of bellhouse rd. There used to be a good football and cricket pitch there, now all houses
Runningman 05-10-2009, 20:32 Off Hollybank Road, where Holly Grove is situated, also on Glade Lea off Gleadless Common.
This is frightening, the history of amateur footy in Sheffield has disappeared under housing development !
James Neil's sports ground used to be at meadowhead where the Park Hotel is now. Used to go a lot in the 70's to watch dad play cricket.
Runningman 05-10-2009, 20:45 And another one ! .................. Where the Sheffield Park Hotel is situated on
Chesterfield Road South. 2 football pitches, once owned by Brunswick Trinity Church at Highfields. Sold to James Neill & Co in 1963 for £11000. Wonder what that land is worth now ?
Runningman 05-10-2009, 20:46 Hi escort1
You was obviously posting the same time as me.
Great minds think alike !
There's an old cricket ground just above the football pitch at the top of Bridle Stile in Mosborough. You can clearly see where the square was due to the flat area on a sloping field. There are also remains of some benches and the old hut. I've no idea when it was abandoned but it must be 20+ years ago at least.

Is the cricket pitch in Stannington still in use?
The Waterworks used to have a cricket and football pitch with tennis courts on Crookes Road.
redshadow 06-10-2009, 08:09 Didn't Dormer Tools used to have a sports club somewhere up Dyche Lane ? Is it still there ?
Runningman 06-10-2009, 08:53 Morning redshadow, Yes the sports area is still there off Dyche Lane.
On Abbeydale Road South, just past the entrance to the Abbeydale sports club, where the 5 Trees estate now stands, there was an old pavilion, which I believe was used by the allotment society that existed there. This pavilion once fronted a cricket pitch, on which I believe Derbyshire once played. That area was in Derbyshire many years ago.
Confirmation if possible by someone on the facts I have just stated !
surfinjim 06-10-2009, 09:01 The bottom of Whitley lane at the Ecclesfield end, used to be Batchelors sports ground. That's now gone to be used for horses.
Was used up to the late 70's.
Also on the end of Clay Wheels Lane before you turn right to head up to FoxHill. There used to be a rugby ground for Sheffield Oaks, but I'm sure it was a works football ground before.

Runningman 06-10-2009, 09:02 Here I am again, keep thinking of places to mention.
Lets not forget that the sport of Pedestrianism ( running ) was very popular during the late 19th and early part of the 20th century.
My Grandfather was involved and ran at venues such as the Sheaf House grounds on Bramall Lane, the Ball Inn, top of Myrtle Rd and a location on Langsett Rd opposite the Barracks. There is a pub on the corner where the sports ground once stood. Can't remember it's name at the moment.
redshadow 06-10-2009, 09:13 Thanks Runningman; I used to work at Dormer in the 1980s and visited the sports ground on several occasions. I think that there used to be an annual football competition between various departments of the company. I took some photos once... must still have them somewhere... probably 1986
BigTeeOwls 06-10-2009, 10:17 The old British coal recreation ground which had, two football pitches, 1 hockey pitch and cricket ground with pavilion. It was on the way down to the old Orgreave club.
