View Full Version : Goodwin (University) swimming pool sexism
I was looking at the timetable for the Shef Uni swimming pool at the Goodwin sports centre the other day.
I notice that it has 1 hr set aside for womens only swimming.
So i've emailed them to ask when the 1 hr for mens only swimming will be.
So far i've had no reply, it will be 1 week tomorrow since I sent the email.
Am i likely to ever receive a reply?
Doubt it. Try asking the Students' Union when the Men's Safety Minibus will arrive to take you home at night - we're discriminated against in that way too.

evildrneil 28-07-2005, 13:59 There was (at least in the past) an hour set aside for men only swimming - if its not there now it's probably because it just wasn't used! Is this sexism or just a difference in demand?
I think evildrneil is right - there used to be a men's hour and a women's hour but the men's hour wasn't busy so they stopped it. I've a feeling there were signs up saying that it wasn't going to be stopped and if people had views against it they should speak to someone.
how odd. It must have been before I started swimming there.
I can't see why it wouldn't be used, the numbers in the pool at mixed times are roughly equal i'd have said.
I wonder if many women who go to the women only time would actually not go to a mixed time....
And do they close the viewing gallery, it would be most amusing to go and watch them... for that matter, do they have only female staff working for that hour???
alchresearch 28-07-2005, 14:04 Are there any men on here who would feel uncomfortable swimming with women in the pool and prefer a men-only session?

i'd prefer a "cyclone + women only" session if that's okay.

Depends on the age of the women, if it's young women in small swimming cossies then by all means I'll join them for a swim :D
Yeah I know, I'm a perv aren't I? ;)
I've been to the women's only before (there was a time when women and men's only were free). It was quite busy (being free might have been something to do with it though). They only had women working and closed the viewing gallery.
Consider that some women are not allowed to show there body to men for religious reasons and some just don't want to - I think it is fairly popular at any time.

I would feel uncomfortable if it were men only, strangely enough.
Why do you want a 'men only' swimming session?
Is it because you are nervous about swimming with those big women who take over the pool doing the butterfly and splashing everone else?
Or is it because you wouldn't go swimming unless there's a men only session?
Or maybe, it's because you've seen something that is 'women only' and want to make a point just for the sake of it?

Can't say that i've noticed men or women taking over the pool and splashing everyone.
And yes i swim in a mixed pool, so
the point option, definitely. but what's you're point, i'm allowed to make points right?

youwhatref 28-07-2005, 14:29 I'd guess it makes sense. Men generally dont mind swimming with women. However i would guess that some women would prefer to swim without the gazes of us guys! (not that we do of course :D )
Why did you ask when the mens only session is going to be (err - you were the one that has written to ask?) Just wondered WHY???
Or do you act on impulse frequently without reason? :hihi:
dwhembro 28-07-2005, 14:35 the mens only swim session used to be on wed night 9-10. It had been going on for years and when the uni updated the goodwin centre they continued the session. didnt know it had ended. Heres another one for you; it used to be free!

because I wanted to know why there wasn't one, and chose to phrase it in that way. Aren't you ever curious about anything?
And i'd say that I act on impulse very rarely, lighten up, this was a harmless action on impulse.
I think one of the ideas of having women only sessions si for women who would like to go swimming but due to their religion it is not acceptable for them to wear an itsy bitsy tweenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini in front of hunky men.
Also if you are a total babe in a cossie you can go swimming without being leered at!

the 2nd reason is equally applicable to men, I have to take a stick with me to keep women away when wearing speedos.
Speedo's eh Cyclone :o
Let me know when you're going again, I could do with a good laugh :heyhey:

I've had to stop wearing them, i wear shorts now as then I can dispense with the stick and just have to borrow a high pressure hose.

yes, because i have an abnormally large abdomen from being pregnant(the rest of me is slim)im not pregnant now, and im sick to the back teeth of the sniggers and looks i get from men/boys at any swimmining baths.
didnt know about the female only swims at goodwin, are non students allowed??

I think you may have just highlighted why there is a demand for a womens only swimming session!!!
You reckon we'll need binoculars then SamC? :P
I can feel a forum 'swim-in' coming on ....

Not meaning to diss you here, but by the same logic I should be able to insist on Adults Only swimming sessions, so that I don't have to put up with the remarks ignorant little kids make when they see how overweight I am.
Actually, I think ignorant little kids who make fun of strangers should be banned from swimming. And going to the cinema. And walking down the street. And breathing. :D
I shouldn't worry about it guys, its kind of a bonus, all the tremendously obese woman with an issue with their size go at these times, leaving the remaining time free for more beautiful specimens

Saturday afternoon is quite good from 12-3 as all the kids wait for the 3pm session with the inflatables and rafts and giant octopus thing.
What do you all think about nude adult swimming sessions? (Not related to the above post of course)

Does it matter if it's high pressure or not if you're just going to stick it down the front of your shorts?
Oh and going back to the point of this thread, pregnant women may well prefer to swim in the presence of other women only.
And I've been to women only sessions where you go with a mate and swim up and down doing that funny head-above-the-water breast-stroke thingie that only women do (y'know, a bit like a dog swimming for a stick?) and gossiped for the whole 60 mins, then got out, dry-haired...... I'd be FAR too embarassed to carry on like that in 'public'!

Don't you have to be a member of a certain sort of, ahem, 'club' for that?

It's not so much about pregnant ladies not wanting men around - it is just incredibly scarey for men to have be near the same water as 20 odd pregnant women bouncing up and down. The water level shot up when we all got in and they used to close the blinds at the baths I went to so not to scare the locals going past. :)

Yeahy, that sounds like a good thing to me.:hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
When I was pregnant I went to the women only sesions at the baths, women tend to be a lot more aware of pregnant women and tend not to kick them in the belly while they swim. I recived quite a nasty volley to the belly from some bloke who was not looking what he was doing, years ago in the pool at Hillsbourgh.
I went to the ladies only sesions at upperthorpe baths after that..
I once went swimming at Chapeltown Baths - and we had to wait outside until the naturist swimming session had finished. :?

I think actually they will take men, but as a first priority they will take women who are on their own, then groups of women, and if there is space they will take men too, but I only used it twice and there were no men on it either time!
Personally I don't mind whether I go swimming in a women only or a mixed session - once you are in the water you just get on and swim anyway. I used to go to a pool that had so many womens/mens/parent and toddler/pensioners/5 legged peoples sessions that it was almost impossible to find a time when you were actually allowed to go and swim. I can understand having possibly a mens and womens session, but at the end of the day, it's not called a "public bath" for nothing...

lol....i dont actually have an issue with my size, but the comments get extremely embarrasing and border on abuse........my partner says im sexy and gorgeous, im qutie ok with my appearance, but theres only so much abuse from other people im willing to take, hence an interest in female only swimming sessions, as the comments and abuse just dont happen:D
yep non students can use goodwin (uni) pool. I think it's 3.60 - including the sauna and steam room try www.usport.co.uk for times and stuff (sorry if I get the link wrong)

cheaper than that I think.
And only £2 off peak.
Does anyone else get annoyed by people crawling along in the fast lanes? Not that I'm that fast but sometimes you jsut wanna have a blast.
I'm still waiting for the tim_rutter only sessions.
