View Full Version : We can't get Broadband!

I live just off Blackstock Road I can't get Broadband from any supplier. Had the BT engineer out last week for a fault on our line and he said that he would check our line length. as you can not be further than 5.5 km from exchange.

He checked it and guess what we are 5.65km from exchange, lol

Does anyone else have this issue and if so have you resolved it, we have lived here for 3 years now, on the promise from Telewest and BT that it's just around the corner.

I personally think that it is outrageous in this day and age!

I'm less than 2 miles from the exchange and despite the BT engineer not being able to find any specific fault on the line we cannot get a broadband signal through it, it just won't support it. they have given me no other explanation and have not suggested that they might find a way to fix it, they just said i can't have it.
(then they tried to charge me for 2 month's use of the damn thing!!!!

I don't know how i would survive without broadband now :o
There is a small light at the end of the tunnel though. The link below will take you to Onspeed. For about £25 a year they can boost your dial up connection by 5x 8)

As you are barely over that they certainly should. Whats the voice quality on your line like? If its not audibly poor then you should be ok.

Let me guess Littleboo, its the crappy exchange at Intake!!! I couldnt get broadband before sept last year (i can only get up to 512), as i live just off blackstock road too. Yet 250 yards down the road they can get Telewest blueyonder!!! Bloody useless!!

More info (http://www.networkitweek.co.uk/itweek/analysis/2087001/broadband-choice-widens) but the figures look a bit out of date. If there are enough of you in an aarea wanting it, can you approach BT as a group and ask about this 'mesh radio' thing?

Thanks Strix, Trouble is....I'm sure Owlsman will back me up... it's full of old age pensioners round here...not much call for broadband.

:D None of my thirty something neighbours seem to have it  (or computers   )

on the other hand... You'd be surprised at what these old fogies get up to ;)

Anyway - there's at least two of you that I've spotted :)
Is there a school or businesses nearby? Perhaps you could start by asking them, and the families associated with them?

Cheeky B*gger I'm 32!!!

yes there is a school but its on the otherside of the river, The gifted side......where they have Telewest.

Actually that may be more of a misfortune, but still you get my drift!!

 What did I say?

I asked several neighbours if they could lend me a filter when I was having problems recently, but they didn't even have computers.

But some of the older members of my family.....
And some forumers (usually found lurking in the history and ex-pat section)....

Edit: And I'm thirty four and a half :(

I am Norton S8...not far from Blackstock Road and we have been able to get broadband since Sept 2004 via the Sharrow Exchange!

I, like Strix have had problems recently with my broadband and unlike Strix now having her problems resolved my broadband is still unavailable!!

I am currently working on a dial up connection which is pay as you go so my time on the internet has been limited of late!!

Broadband....great when it works....sh**te when it doesn't!!

I find it hard to understand why some areas of Sheffield (my in-laws for example) have had cable for over 7 years and STILL no Telewest in the Norton area!

You can ask BT to re-route your line...afterall you pay line rental at the same rate as the next person who can get broadband!!

I agree though...shambles for this day and age!!

Having established it wasn't the ISP, the router or the line I was lost.

As a last resort I asked a neighbour if I could plug the router in in his house, which seemed to re-set it, coz now it works

Who's your ISP Shiesh?

Chill strix was only jokin:thumbsup:

we are on the intake exchange Shiesh
which to my seems really bizarre that you are on the sharrow when we are closer to it :loopy:

That's is why I suggested you call BT ignite/wholesale and request a re-route....if you don't ask/demand you won't get !!

My ISP is supanet Strix.....my problems started about 6 weeks ago when I started getting random frequent disconnections, then nothing....

All filters, modem box etc working ok so BT did whoosh test via ISP and found a fault but I am STILL waiting for the work to be done on the line...they seem to be dealing with it at a snail pace as the phone is still working etc

My problem is complicated beyond the norm because my Hubby has a business line and broadband connection in the loft conversion as he works from home....his line is ok but is managed by Cable and Wireless BUT the home line appears to be split as only one line comes into the house from the telegraph pole...the problems started when his business line was broadband enabled through his company so at present we are trying to 'insist' that the fault lies with Cable and Wireless for splitting the line in the first place and thus weakening the home line to a 'unstable and now useless' broadband line!

Very frustrating...I know it will eventually be sorted but it is taking an age for them to decide who is liable for the repairs.....humphhh!!

What about sky broadband?

Broadband is broadband mate, even in this day and age though you still have to live virtually next door to the exchange to get anything above 512k

British Telecom messed up a bit when they invented Broadband, sure it's better now than it used to be, because at one stage hardly anyone could get BB, but even now it's still nowhere near as widely available as it could and should be.

I can now get 512mb, which is fine for me....it beats the ruddy dial up. I also now have wireless and that works just fine too even though AOL said that it wouldn't with the 512mb (silver package)

I was on 512 and live 4 miles from the exchange, but somehow I can now connect at 1.5mbs which is BIG improvement......maybe is they replace all that grotty old cable that dates from the 1960's I might get the full 8mbs....

Yes we have lived here 4 years now, it's only just gone to 512mb so I won't hold my breath for anything much faster than that appearing in the next 4 years!!!!

No don't, i got an email from BT around Feb time saying that 512 is the most i will get till they update the exchange and crappy lines. Ive binned em off now for TalkTalk which seems to be doing just fine, reduced me phone bill by £12 a month

Ive just done a check on BT's broadband checker, it has now increased from 512 to 1mb... Dunno when this happened?
Ive checked me mates number, his has gone up from 512 to 3.5mb on the Mosborough exchange.

I think a speed check is in order!

I've got Broadband on Plowright. It's only 1meg though cos the exchange hasn't been updated. I thought I was on Intake - maybe I'm on a different exchange?

I want Blueyonder but ours is the only block on any of the Plowrights not to have cable.

You will be on the Intake exchange. Use this (http://dslzoneuk.net/checker.php) to check your speed.

I did a speed check yesterday, im supposed to be able to get 1mb, but im getting just over 512

As for the cable, its a joke!!
