View Full Version : Best holiday places in Britain
FallenAngel6 28-07-2005, 12:54 Hey
well me an a couple of my mates are wanting to go somewhere on holiday and we have heard of quite a few good places which are also quite cheap.
The ones we have in mind at the moment are scarborough scegness and york but we cant decide which one to choose.
Has anyone been to any of these places and which one do you thinks the best.
Thanks from Fallen
Personally I'd say York as there's more to see, better pubs and the other two are seaside sh*tholes!:gag:
WallBuilder 28-07-2005, 13:55 I like the coast as I don't live by the sea and so always get a childish thrill when I see the waves and smell the salt air. It's true there isn't a huge amount to do in Skegness or Scarborough and if you want a wild night life I'd suggest Blackpol but if you just want to build sandcastles then I'd say Skegness out of the two.
Ousetunes 28-07-2005, 13:55 Scarborough is just plain awful. Infact, it has absolutely nothing going for it. Last time I was there the place looked as though it hadn't seen a can of paint in 50 years.
Also, just where do you take your kids when you stay there? All the pubs were definitely 'no kids' (which in principal is fine except that at a family seaside resort, you'd expect at least a couple to be family orientated). And there weren't any pubs where you could sit outside - they just didn't exist!
It's been that long since I was in Skegness I simply shan't comment. I'll leave that to others.
As for York, it's simply fantastic. Loads of accommodation to choose from (hotels, B & B and even camping), there's plenty to see and do: the Minster, Yorvik Centre, Museum Gardens with St. Mary's Abbey, Railway Station, York Dungeon, York Story and ofcause you can take a trip on a river cruiser (which has its own bar, not badly priced either). And you must do a Ghost Trip!
In the evening there are little bistros, restaurants and ofcause the finest pub crawl in Yorkshire (most pubs serve real ale too).
It's also the easiest place to get to especially by train and the quickest place to get to (1 hour 10 in the car).
If you want any more info PM me.
drgiggles 28-07-2005, 13:56 york is nice for drinking!
DragonofAna 28-07-2005, 14:13 As you know Fallen - I am in Scarborough a couple of times each month. The drive there does not take long and I always find plenty to do - even now after twenty visits to the place.
The bed and breakfast places are great value. Depends whether you want a holiday for fun or for going clubbing and such. I do not know much about the clubbing bit as I am past all that sort of stuff.
I will be in Scarborough again next week so if the weather is okay I will try to find out what they count as night life - something I have not looked into in any great detail.
Being an old romantic I like walking along the beach front with friends and family and seeing the kids having fun in the ocean or on the amusements.
Skeggy seems much quieter than Scarborough. York - dunno really. I shall have to see when I next drive through there.

i`ve not been on holiday since i was really small but the best memories are of Newquay, bet it`s not the same now though!
muddycoffee 28-07-2005, 17:22 If you're talking a week in UK with mates, one of the greatest things you can do is go on a boat in the norfolk broads.
It is a stunning place, with hundreds of pubs, and 250 miles of waterway to explore. And some towns villages and cities too. It's lovely, and its nothing like canal trips or anything, there are no locks.
And the wildlife is incredible, you will see kingfishers and lots of other birds.
the_rudeboy 28-07-2005, 17:40 Out of the three its got to be York. Great pubs and plenty to do.
If you are travellin by car you can always have a day at the seaside from York (Brid or Hornsea rather than Scarboro tho.)
madblast 28-07-2005, 19:00 it depends on what you want from your holiday, me personally i love cornwall, for surfing, and good night life. but out of the 3 id prefer skeggy, bigger beaches, more amusements and the rides are ok too
if you want somewhere nice then York. If you want a cheesy drunken time then Skeggie.
Out of the three i would also choose York.
Theres so many places to visit in York, and i think the pubs are more child friendly there. Its packed full of history and you just cant see it all in a day trip you need a few days there at least.
One of our favourites is the Castle museum.
Were going to Torquay this year and hope to visit Bygones while we're there which is something similar.-(we hope)
Last time we were in York we had Lunch at the Lendal Cellars.
DragonofAna 29-07-2005, 06:40 So - why Scarborough? Amusements, fair, large beaches, surrounding countryside, close to whitby and other resorts, candy floss, donuts, donkey rides, the castle, lots of shops, cheap accommodation, usually no terrible road congestion, parking places, tours, terror towers - the new modified one, markets, cheapo shops for tourists, tattoo parlours by the dozen, the sea air, boat trips, the harbour, the aromas, the noise.
Depends how long you are going there for, and why you are going.
I proposed to my wife in the middle of the main shopping area in Scarborough. Went down on one knee and was not bothered about the folk looking on. So you could add romance to the list.

skeggie - nice for the weekend.couple of clubs & late bars plus amusements for spending your loose change.
scarboro - nice shops with the odd quaint coffee shop plus couple of night clubs & late night bars.bit more spread out than skeggie & bit more of a quaint english seaside feel to it.
york - no idea about clubs but would imagine one or two as a major city. very touristy with nick nack shops, plenty of history & culture to visit & absorb.designer shopping 10 minutes on bus.
depends what your looking for .
