View Full Version : Trolls and arguements on every topic
I find this "forum" amusing at times , its meant to be somewhere for people to express there opinions and gather other people opinions, but 9 out of 10 times it turns into a spelling contest or a points scoring quest, no matter what anyone says theres always some to contradict and be nasty, everyone has there own opinion , thats life! you listen you other peoples opinions and still make your own mind up, thats also life! Let people say what they think , listen and take it on board and then make your own mind up but dont turn into "trolls" and be idiots because its boring and unhelpful, also regardless of the topic the threads always end with rascism or staffy owners! lol its sad really, anyway rant over and roll in the trolls! thanks lol
GordonBennet 02-10-2009, 09:40 You've spelt racism wrong. :hihi::hihi::hihi:
You've spelt racism wrong. :hihi::hihi::hihi:
Yes lol thanks, its a typo, I can spell until i get on a keyboard! Do you have a staffy? :hihi:

as I understood it, Geoff set it up as 'a resource for sheffield', so it's a place to share information - opinion should have little bearing on most threads with that remit

I would've thought it a bit difficult to separate opinion from discussion, especially a general discussion.
HeadingNorth 02-10-2009, 10:27 You can always argue that it serves as a resource for Sheffielders to discuss things and share their opinions with each other, as well as a source of information.
Indeed, even if it was a resource for Sheffield trolls to hijack and derails threads, it would still be "a resource." Fortunately, Geoff and his team of moderators don't want that.
Paul2412 02-10-2009, 10:37 How boring would the forum be if everyone agreed with what everyone else said?
There are too many people on here who label people trolls for simply disagreeing with them.

I disagree! :hihi:
People just want to disagree and argue ... you can't really argue with that!
Grandad.Malky 02-10-2009, 10:48 The word “troll” is thrown about to freely to attack someone with an apposing opinion, there are few “trolls” but there are lots of differing opinions.
Paul2412 02-10-2009, 10:52 I disagree! :hihi:
Troll alert.
What annoys me is people on threads such as bar threads that have an opinion when theyve never even been in the place.
Moonbird 02-10-2009, 14:57 Speaking as an everyday user and not as a mod, discussions and debates are great and in the main I think that is what brings people back to the forum, that and the fabulous community spirit that shows itself in a crisis, when everyone pulls together...even the trolls :hihi:
Unfortunately as soon as a crisis is over its back to business as usual, debates turn into a hate fest, where people attack each other and generally a slanging match ensues.
I notice that lots of people like to blame the mods for people leaving the forum because of what they perceive as heavy moderation, but I think in reality the most people leave because of the nastiness on the threads, if people just regulated their own behaviour things would be a lot more pleasant all round in my opinion.
Rah Rah Rah 03-10-2009, 09:34 The spelling ones always get me. Why can't they be cute trolls with rainbow coloured hair.

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.
That is what a troll is not a moron who can only find spelling mistakes to argue with a poster
I do wish there was a strictly enforced "attack the post, not the poster" rule on here. There are numerous no-go threads as if you disagree with certain posters, you will be labelled as something derogratory, which if you then try to counter, ends up derailing the thread. This doesn't mean that people posting controversial stuff can't be countered, just that any replies have to be about the post, not the opinion they hold on the poster.
This follows on from my belief that there are at current too many people who post one or two line OPs with controversial or misleading thread titles, just to get a reaction from other posters so they can attack them. Most of them get caught (thanks to the mods), but some still get through.

The thing is that mods cannot look through every single thread (unless you are just cruising the forum anyway and notice) so if there is a problem they are reliant on people reporting it, there seems to be an "anti snitch" feeling that is hard to understand, so if there is a problem please report it.
The forum is after all what ever we all make it, good or bad.
i hate each and every one of you :D

oh yes, totally agree paul, troll, strawman, puppet, the things they say when they really cant justify calling someone a racist, and on here no one is ever racist towards whites either.

Yes, its called a Forum innit ? :)

I understand that the mods can't see every post - I moderate a couple of other forums myself, and have every respect for you lot on here, as it's a much bigger, less well behaved, rabble than I have to deal with.
However, I have reported several posts where someone has attacked someone rather than their viewpoint, and if there is an outcome, it will be the thread is closed, regardless of any other discussions going on in the thread which haven't resulted in personal abuse. If I'm interested in a subject and something crops up, knowing the most likely mod reaction is to close the thread, often I will ignore the post and hope the poster goes away and stops trying to get a reaction on that thread.

I'm sure all the moderating team appreciate your point and we would prefer not to close threads, however sometimes more posts would need to be deleted than left - hence the thread may be closed.
I do wish there was a strictly enforced "attack the post, not the poster" rule on here.
If only everyone stuck to that rule! Its impossible to enforce without people reporting the offending posts. As it says at the foot of this page: 'POSTS ON THIS FORUM ARE NOT ACTIVELY MONITORED'
Some posts on this thread have already been removed. They included discussion of the faults of other named users - a sure fire way to start the type of argument that escalates into insults and abuse and leads to threads disappearing!

An example of this in action would be the now disappearred "Sex abuse rife in other religions, says Vatican" thread I started a few days ago. The thread was soon attacked by those on the board who don't like discussions which show Christianity in a negative light and they have succeeded in getting it removed. Rewarding such behaviour by shutting down and even completely deleting threads in this manner encourages people to troll threads on subjects they don't want to see discussed.

If people didn’t take the bait the alleged troll would soon move on.

Not necessarily you get some 'trolls' who just pretty randomly go around from thread to thread looking to get a rise out of people and they do indeed move on if they don't get a reaction.
With those 'trolls' seeking to disrupt threads for idealogical reasons instead of just general assholeishness however they often stick around with great persistence insulting people and trying to drag the thread off topic even when people try to ignore them and keep a substantive discussion going.
In either case the deletion of entire threads instead of specific posts rewards 'trolls' and encourages such behaviour.

Free yourself from ukcb and love yourself again I know I have ;)

In that case, the best reaction is to ignore them and use the "Report this post" link.
It is a lot easier for the mod team to remove one or two posts by a troll, than
it is for us to clean up a thread that has turned into an argument between several posters and trolls.

Which brings us back to dosxuk's initial point:

So long as people (justifiably so far as I can tell) fear that a likely result of reporting trolling will be the thread getting locked or disappeared then they're obviously going to be reluctant to do so as they don't want the troll to succeed in ending or even completely erasing the thread.

I have noticed this too, when a troll is reported the usual course of action is to lock the thread.
(from the few that I have seen anyway)

Well I like you so shurrup!

A good moderator would lock the thread, check it through, remove all such offending posts, and ... the next course of action depends on what's left. If it's reduced the thread to gibberish, it may as well be closed/deleted. If it hasn't, the thread should be re-opened.
Of course, being a moderator that good requires a lot of time, and I believe all the moderators here are volunteers. Maybe they don't have that much time, given how large the forum is. It doesn't necessarily follow that they are incompetent, even if they aren't following best procedure.

Which flies in the face of reporting anything. As is said at the bottom of each page, posts are not actively monitored. Therefore, if people want a moderation decision, they MUST report posts. We need posters to report nonsense, and the sooner, the better, especially as it makes the team's work easier.
We do not, and cannot make decisions without a report being generated.
I get fed up of having posts removed. I answer and correct incorrect posts, often pointing out the ignorance of the original poster and the next thing my post gets removed. If you must post incorrect rubbish then you must expect criticism.
One moderator in particular is an ace at it. If he persists I will name him and take issue with him.

Again, if you feel that there is a problem, please report it. Often moderation does mean that reasonable posts are removed as they relate to unreasonable posts.
Please bear this in mind.
Closing now.
