slickwitch 01-10-2009, 08:15 So I'm reading this fab book.....actually I read it cos Basil is a fan but don't tell him and it really is making me so much more chilled and relaxed about the world.
It's called "<removed>" it, the ultimate spiritual way" by David Parkin.
And basically even if you crash your life you just say...well, you know.
Anyway, I challenge you good people of the forum to wind me up! :hihi:

Idiot....the best way to wind slickwitch up is for everybody to ignore her attention seeking drivel.

Yes....I'm usually well known for my insightful ponderings on the evils of the BNP ;). Pointlessness is my gift......:hihi:

The challenge was to wind HER up not you. Good job really otherwise it wouldn't have been much of a challenge.
slickwitch 01-10-2009, 08:28 Where is Basil?
Working...allegedly. Though if stroking his beard seductively from behind a gorse bush and cooing to a female goat near Fox House is work I think someone should hand him his P45.
DragonofAna 01-10-2009, 08:39 Surely you will not know how good the book is until you crash your life?
Do you consider it is a good thing, when something goes wrong, to just shake your head and say "Oh well..." rather than try to understand the reasons why the something went wrong? Sounds a bit defeatest to me - still - each to their own.

erm.....it's not that drastic.....though actually I did recently crash a bit ...nother story.....
just allows you to cope with day to day crap that surfaces.
foxforcefive 01-10-2009, 08:50 There is a ban on all woman consuming wine & wearing cute shoes, beat that for a crash!
slickwitch 01-10-2009, 08:52 There is a ban on all woman consuming wine & wearing cute shoes, beat that for a crash!
Yes but you could never be called "All Woman" could you? I mean it takes a lot to keep that strapped down! :hihi:
DragonofAna 01-10-2009, 08:53 Some people can cope without having to just throw their hands in the air and say "Well that is what the fates have decided for me". There are those who cannot but should not be exploited for it.
Recently had a big crash and could have just accepted it and said "Hey ho! It's just something that happened." but then what would be the point of enduring anything. Still seems defeatest - even though you may be faced with a no win situation.
Better to try to learn what went wrong in order to attempt to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past if possible, and generally a crash is due to errors the person makes.
You either learn to cope or you end up in a small padded room somewhere or worse. Simply accepting what the world throws at you as being your fate is not something I can accept. I would consign the book to the bin if such was what it suggested.

No it isn't. It does teach you to cope. It's just helpful for someone like me who can be prone to temper and impetuosity when my life becomes a bit difficult.
It also teaches you to accept who you are and not constantly try to change yourself. That includes having unrealistic expectations of yourself due to the views of others. It's a good read, honestly. And it's funny.

Yes you are on the lash at 10 am, in lovely shoes (even though you haven't seen your feet since 1987). I am indeed overcome with jealousy.

(oh, and thanks.x You're full!)

You learn to cope by continuing to live, because even seeking escape through the bottom of a bottle is not an answer and the pain still comes back. Temper is not a bad thing. At least when when you blow a storm you get some relief, and there is generally a calm after the storm - a time when you can reflect and figure things out.
You do not need a book to help you figure this out.
If you refuse to change then you stagnate. Three are many ways of changing yourself - especially when this involves learning to get rid of the things that have accumulated through the past making you something you are not. We all carry baggage - live behind a multiple facade of self-deception, and most of us spend time trying to find our true selves.
But if the book is funny and you enjoy it then there is no problem.

Thanks.....good chance I'll be reading "How to chuck away books that make you feel all gooey inside and go out and punch someone pointlessly in the back of the head instead" by this time next week.
Hey .......I'll write one!:hihi:
DragonofAna 01-10-2009, 09:24 See - you did not need a pointless book to motivate you into writing a book. You could call it "The Idiots guide of How to Punch someone pointlessly in the back of the head".
Books are there for one main reason - for the authors to make money. Some deserve to make money. Some just prey on people and should remain on the shelf gathering dust until they crumble to the same.
Look forward to reading your book.

Yes of course they are, that doesn't make some of them anything less than wonderful.
Any kind of book that gets you thinking about how you conduct yourself is a good thing (IMO).
DragonofAna 01-10-2009, 09:42 I did say some deserve to make money. I have bought all the discworld books for starters - and they do make me think ;)
You should not need a book to get you thinking about how you conduct yourself, and buying one for that purpose suggests you are already aware that you have a problem. The answer then is to understand that problem - and it is unlikely that a book intended for the masses will deal specifically with your situation - especially in a 'spiritual'/psychological manner - where there are so many differences in the equation as to make mass diagnoses impossible.
Dragon of Ana
FallenAngel6 01-10-2009, 09:44 Story books are wonderful :D books that tell you how to live your life are not so wonderful. Authors write books and probably think "oooo there has to be some people out there gullible enough to believe me"
Ive read books and believed them but the fact is they tend to talk crap, i just used to be a very gullible person.
Just sit down with a nice fiction book that matches your mood and reflect on your life with a hot cup of tea and bar of chocolate.

But it's nice to sometimes give something you haven't thought of a go. I haven't got time to sit down and work out why I'm a ranting lunatic.....good lord...I have too much ranting to do!:hihi:

I'll agree to disagree then.
Reading a book that helps you understand certain things is a massively good thing. Some people don't have a support network, some people may be embarrassed about talking to a professional, and yeah some books are pants, but how can you disregard all books when some may offer some kind of way to finding the answers?
DragonofAna 01-10-2009, 10:03 Again - I did say that some deserve to make money - meaning that some books are worth buying, hopefully with the intent of reading those books.
Perhaps I have been fortunate in being able to see my mistakes and attempt to adjust myself to get rid of them. It is a slow and often painful business. What I have learned is that different times call for different measures. What makes you angry one time may not make you angry at some other time - so a book that suggests a general overall source of problems is not likely to take into account the exact circumstances why you may feel as you do at any given time.
There are many people who will buy a book hoping to psychoanalyze themselves to find the root of a problem, and accept what they read as being the answer, only to continue to fall into the same routine because what they read was something they could deceive themselves into believing. "The reason you feel this way is ..." may or may not be true, and unfortunately many people are unable to decide which is which.
So not all books are to be disregarded. But all books should be treated not as answers but as a possible means to an answer.
Dragon of Ana
FallenAngel6 01-10-2009, 10:05 I think everyone should take it upon themselves to make their own decisions without a book making the decisions for that person. Everyone makes their own mistakes and learns by them. If someone writes about mistakes they have made it does not necessarily mean you will make the same mistake and overcome it how they have. Maybe the books are their for guidance but people are reading the books as a solution for there problems, which was not intended.
Sure read these books but dont use them to solve your problems cause only you can do that.
foxforcefive 01-10-2009, 10:10 So not all books are to be disregarded. But all books should be treated not as answers but as a possible means to an answer.
That was kind of my point :)

Sorry - I forgot we were supposed to be doing that. You did, however, start an interesting thread about the value of books and the value people place on what they read.
Surely the point is that we would not know if we were winding you up or not, having only your responses to go on - and it is easy enough to act calm in a stressful situation, and vice versa. So the whole point is ???
Glad you enjoyed the book and hope you learned something from it that has given meaning to your life.

BasilRathbon 01-10-2009, 11:36 So I'm reading this fab book.....actually I read it cos Basil is a fan but don't tell him and it really is making me so much more chilled and relaxed about the world.

And basically even if you crash your life you just say...well, you know.
Anyway, I challenge you good people of the forum to wind me up! :hihi:
Dear oh dear, Slick, old girl! You really have explained this one badly, haven't you?
For one thing it's by John Parkin, not David, so if anyone's been searching for it online, that's why you haven't found it.
Secondly, the book doesn't tell you how to live your life, instead it asks you to look at everything in a different light - the world around you, the way you behave, what makes you angry.
I would explain more but this isn't my thread and it seems to have developed into an interesting discussion about the nautre of books, so I'll start a new thread about the "F**k It" way.
Another interesting thread is moved to the I'm Bored graveyard and dies an instant death.
What the hell was it moved for anyway, as far as I can see this was turning into an intelligent seinsible debate?
BasilRathbon 01-10-2009, 13:29 ...... so I'll start a new thread about the "F**k It" way.
Well, I did and (unusually for me) made quite an intellectual and well thought out post, which attracted several replies. I've just come back to look at it and it seems the whole thread has vanished.
:(
Ah well, as the book says, f**k it......:P

That's good, let it all out! Remember to keep your breathing regular and accept your temper is what makes you a source of fascination to so many of us.
