View Full Version : Speed restriction signs in Sheffield
I noticed recently that new speed restriction signs have been placed at the junction of roads leading off Retford Road where Retford Road has a 40mph restriction. The new signs have been placed on every road with the exception of Furnace Lane, why is this?
And strangely, when travelling from Catcliffe (Morrisons) and turning onto Retford Road, at the left turn only junction (sorry don't know the name of the road) there is nothing to indicate that drivers are joining a 40mph road until quite a distance further down. This, IMO is dangerous as some people (quite rightly) think they are joining a 30mph road and therefore underestimate the speed of oncoming traffic. :suspect:
Might be worth contacting the Street Force guys via the council website and see if they can answer your question/put up any missing signs.
There's quite a few roads with a lack of speed limit signs. There should be a lot more - especially near speed cameras to remind people of what the limit is.

Why they can't put a legal speed inicator on the camera warning signs beats me. There's a stretch of road nearby with a 40mph limit and we've often been behind people doing 40 who've slammed their brakes on to get down to 30 when they see the camera warning sign.
To me this is dangerous as it meanss drivers in a steady flow of traffic maintaining a safe distance suddenly find themselves tail-gating because somebody doesn't know the road.
It's about time Retford road was slowed down to 30 anyway.
There's a school just off it on Beaver Hill Road, and a pedestrian crossing which has seen more than it's fair share of accidents.
When it's busy (rush hour), it's virtually impossible to get out of any of the side roads, and the Catcliffe to Woodhouse route is popular enough to cause some real problems.
I wouldn't fancy trying to cross over the blasted thing on foot
Priscilla 30-07-2005, 22:03 I wouldnt worry too much about speed signs. As a pedestrian, I have come to understand that speed signs are just a suggestion/option to most drivers, as is stopping at cross walks, waiting till the pedestrian is off the crossing before speeding off ( that extra second it takes is just too long for some drivers) and parking in bus bays
.thats my rant for the day!!
I can't understand why that part of Retford Road is a 40 limit either :loopy: It's a built up area ffs.
Mind you, sometimes doing 40 is too slow for some people, i've had one or two 'frustrated' drivers overtake me and glaring at me as if i'm dawdling when I'm doing bang on 40 down there.
I've sent an e-mail to the council to ask how I can get my road designated a 20mph.
We've got a speed bump that isn't signposted or marked out properly and some people come round the corner onto our 'side road' at crazy speeds.
We do have our very own traffic calmer though - my little cat crosses the road very slowly and often holds up the traffic  She hates staying in the house if it's a nice day and her fave playground is across the (side) road and on the railway banking where she goes mousing.
when did you last have your speedo calibrated?
Moi?
Had it checked a while ago - I was doing 61 down the parkway and when the speeding ticket turned up - yup 61 it was :(
fair enough, mine underreads by nearly 10%, which would explain why if I stuck to the limit by my speedo some drivers would be annoyed.
The one's that bug me are those that do 35 in a 40 zone, and carry on doing 35 in a 30 zone :loopy: I swear some people never look to see what the limit is!

lol, i told my dad off earlier for doing 60 on the motorway. I don't think he was impressed.

I fully agree, a prime example is on Hathersage Road (nr Limb Lane).
This is a 60mph road, and when you come in to Sheffield, you come round a blind bend in the road, to be met by a camera, and everyone (who doesnt know the road) slams on there anchors, thinking its a 40 camera.
garryh69 06-11-2005, 11:47 anyone had a speeding fine at the bottom of rivelin valley rd?
if so you can get your money back due to a flaw in the way the speesd limet is displayed.
pm me for details
Couldn't care less about getting money back - I haven't had a ticket and if you get one you deserve it ;) But I am curious what's wrong with the signs round there?
(and I haven't sent a PM cos I'm sure if I am interested, others are too!)
garryh69 06-11-2005, 14:15 the signs are not properly displayed.
the speed restriction signs should be on a round sign with a red border and white background according to the law
now the signs down there are on a yellow rectangular sign with red circle border with white background.
its just a technicality and dont condone speeding but if you thought you were doing the limit and got cought doing 35/40 then you can appeal.
DragonofAna 06-11-2005, 14:21 Rivelin Valley road is mostly a 40mph zone according to the signs. Its only between the cafe and the one way at hillsborough that there is a 30 restriction. All way along in the other direction its a 40 zone so where abouts are we looking at for the 30 zoning?
Aside from which - you speed - you take the risk - you get caught - you pay the price.
Don't speed.

Is true :) But a lot of motorists who are breaking the law are getting off scot free because the council themselves can't be arsed to comply with the law on signage :loopy:
There's a bloody great manual on correct and legal road markings and signage - all the highways bod has to do is refer to it and comply with it. If he wants to be creative he should seek alternative employment :D

If he was in the inside lane, there was nothing wrong with it. Two whole lanes available for people to overtake him, and he'll have been getting better mileage out of his fuel.
If, of course, he was sat in either of the other two lanes at that speed, good on you! :)
I have never slowed down for a "Speed Camera" I race through them all. Do same as me and just take your number plates off.
Is this the one ?

Personally I think the orange rectangles should help draw attention to the sign - so how people feel justified argueing about the validity of a ticket infuriates me.
Just means council has to spend money 'correcting' signs for people who insist on exploiting a technicality when they are clearly in the wrong.
Guess who pays for the signs? Thats right, the council tax payers.
Maybe you get away with a speeding ticket or two but you encourage the council to put up tax to pay for 'legalizing' signage.

Another one is off the Parkway at the Mannor Park junction - I cam imagine a numpty coming off and being pulled doing 50 (no sign saying otherwise as you come off)
On that thought I wonder if the officer would consider if he could give a roadside IQ test. ;)

Depending on my mood and traffic I usualy do about 55-60 Mph - the extra half hour is gonna help me how? :)
In my 2 years of driving I've been speeding either accidentaly or in necessity (getting a child to hospital in an emergency - but safely with it) and I slowed down (respectivly) when I realise or when I needed to.
andywatton 09-11-2005, 10:20 Always annoys me that no-one seems to realise that Penistone Road near to Morrisons is a 30mph, not 40 or 50.
Admittedly, should be a 40 road, but some people do 50/60 upwards.

If you have plenty of half hours to throw away why not come and do some of my work for me, my time is precious.

Agreed - it's hard to decide what's more annoying - the 30 limit or the people who drive at approximately double the limit. I can understand them limiting the speed to 30 near the football ground, but there seems to be no need whatsoever for it to come all the way to Kelham Island. It should definitely be 40 around Morrisons/Mecca Bingo.

What annoys me is the lack of speed limit signs not just in this city (including rural and suburbs) but in most cities that i've been to in the UK.
Time they put a few more up and repainted (reface) some of the worn signs.
I feel they should put a speed limit sign up just before a speed camera, some roads change limits within 500 yards
