You must be as old or older than me? I remember it well, my dads mate used to own it & the food was the best Down To Earth Food you could find in Sheffield. He was a Chinese guy & he did most of the cooking. (I can''t remember his name & my dad died 20 years ago now so i can't ask him) His wife (& most of her girl friends) served, I must say even though i was very young at the time (in 1978 ) the Girls dressed to impress (if you know what i mean) ;) Yep, those were the days, Real cups of Tea & Coffee with big bowls of sugar & Squeezy tubes of Tomato sauce n Mustard always laid on the tables. Steptoad 01-10-2009, 08:53 Didn't it reopen as a Wimpy for a while, before McDonalds came to town. teddie 01-10-2009, 11:27 Didn't it reopen as a Wimpy for a while, before McDonalds came to town. We did get some famous people in, and It had a great atmosphere. The Picture house opposite had Zulu on . Now that is going back a few years. Powerage 08-10-2009, 12:53 I remember the Golden Egg well, me and my mates used to go in in the evenings sometimes before we were old enough for the pubs. They never seemed to get annoyed with us sitting there with just cups of tea and coffee. I was quite upset when it shut. jewls29 08-10-2009, 22:07 i remember the golden egg well, me and my mates used to go in in the evenings sometimes before we were old enough for the pubs. I used to go to the place nearly every day.The owner was a Turkish guy called Osman, a very humorous man with a Turkish accent. On Saturdays the restaurant was overcrowded with customers specially kids who made a lot of noise. This made him a bit concerned and want to get rid of them. With his strong foreign accent, he used to say to the kids, who usually ordered for only 'chip booty', " come on kids, go, go, go to the Wimpy", pointing to the next door restaurant. There was a girl who later married with an Italian man. Her name was (or is) yvonne Carress, I hope the spelling is right. She was then 26. Such a a wonderful girl she was. I hope one day some body can tell me where she is now. I love Sheffield, I can tell a lot about this wonderful city. Caress" (maybe the Y stands for Yvonne?) was born in the Rotherham district in Jul-Sep 1956. She evidently married Paolo La Barbera in Sheffield in Oct-Dec 1980. The 2004 electoral roll shows a Paolo La Barbera at an address in S8. Martine/Yvonne is somehow not listed, but I've PM'd the address to you - good luck!.:) boyfriday 17-10-2010, 20:01 Hi Azizollah - I just looked in BMD records. A "Martine Y. I think I may know you- I remember the Golden Egg and Osman, though the name Yvonne Caress means nothing to me- hope you manage to get in touch. I'm sending you a pm although this is an oldish thread I'd love to know how you and your family are getting on! bigsteve 09-04-2011, 16:44 I used to go to the golden egg with my mum as a kid, it was always a treat and unfortunatly places like that have long gone due to 'costa/starbuck' types places with no soul. Plus that was before 'meadowhell' and the council killed Sheffield center........... azizollahd 14-04-2011, 15:06 Oh, God I wish I could close my eyes and just find myself in Golden in those years when I used to go to the Stone House in the lunch time and on my return to my house I only sober enough to meet my friends in the Golden Egg and enjoy a cup of coffee (with five sugars) and spend the rest of the afternoon sitting on thebenches outside and looking at all those ..... azizollahd 14-04-2011, 15:09 Hey Aziz! I'm sending you a pm although this is an oldish thread I'd love to know how you and your family are getting on! Perhaps her name was Eavan and Yvonne ferretman 15-04-2011, 04:48 my mum worked there as a pot washer her name was dolly I think I worked with your mum,Dolly,at the golden egg did she live in some flats at Hillsboro barracks,on Penistone Road, once went to visit her. cant remember what for, did she move when they pulled the flats down? Treatment 15-04-2011, 12:57 Surely Golden Egg was part of a chain ? There was a clutch of them in London in the mid seventies. jomarch 15-04-2011, 13:51 Perhaps her name was Eavan and Yvonne I have just found a record of Martine Yvonne Caress as a politics student at the University of Sheffield in 1989. As she was married in 1980 I can only assume she had returned to using her maiden name by 1989, so maybe she was no longer married then. Unfortunately, she is on the list of lost alumni- so the University has also lost trace of her. I can only assume, however, that this is the same person you are looking for as Caress is an unusual surname and the combination of names and placing her in Sheffield at this time seems more than coincidence. It was great to hear from you and I'll keep trying to locate this woman for you. |
