Looking at some of these excellent threads here on films, prompted me to ask, if you had to name your best Robert de Niro film - which one would you choose ?

For me, it's a tricky one, as he very rarely makes any carp films, but I think I'm finally settled on 'Heat' with Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, Jon Voigt etc.

What's your best one ?

Heat
Frankenstein
Midnight Run

Probably missed loads of others out , but they're my current faves in order.

Taxi Driver. I like the fact that (like most De Niro characters) Bickle doesn't undergo any personal development, there's no character arc or growth. He stays more or less the same throughout the entire film, and it ends on a slightly amibiguous note. I get the impression that not long after the film ends, he'll probably wind up doing it all over again.

I'm also a massive fan of The King of Comedy (another Scorsese film and one which I think is much under-rated), The Godfather II, Midnight Run, The Deer Hunter, Once Upon a Time in America....

Damn, he's made a load of classic films over the years.

Yep, some excellent films there, although, as I've got so used to seeing him in a particular persona, I do have a little problem seeing him in some comedy films, (apart from meet the fockers!! :D - that was brilliant :D )

How about Cape Fear ? There were a couple bits with the girl that left me feeling slightly uneasy, but hey, what absolutely fantastic acting from de Niro.

Thinking about what my favourites are, I really can't narrow it down. So I'll just say anything that he made from 1973 (Mean Streets) to 1998 (Ronin). After that there are only a few notable appearances that I would watch again.

Mean Streets, that's another good one - may have to go to play.com to actually buy it !

A bit of a thread drift - but seeing Adam Sandler in your sig, reminded me of the type of actor he is, I actually haven't rated him that much, imho, the best film of his that I thought great was Big Daddy.

How about the other actor in Big Daddy - Stephen Bu.... - difficult one to spell, especially this time of the morning ;-) He's a cracking actor, he's done some very good parts, the one he did in Reservoir dogs was brilliant as well.

Anyway, I digress :D

Big Daddy was seriously sucky (in my opinion), as are the majority of Sandlers so called comedies. I have only liked him in three films to date. They are:- Punch Drunk Love, Reign Over Me, and the recent Funny People (in which he basically plays himself....flaws and all).

Now Steve Buscemi - he's great in most films I've seen him in, and does the support role to perfection.

I don't think I've seen those 3 Adam Sandlers films, but I personally did like Big Daddy. I thought Click was excellent as well.

I guess my favourite would be Jackie Brown, as he is playing a very different character than he usually does. Like a lot of top Hollywood actors you get a feeling that the actors stop acting and just play themselves in a role. In Jackie Brown though I get more of a sense that de Niro is actually acting. I also love the King of Comedy.

I don't like him at all. Was he Serpico? I did like him in Ronin so please ignore the first sentence.

Really liked him in goodfellas, cape fear, jacky brown and more so in casino which I'm going to watch again tonight actually as I haven't seen it for ages. Some websites state that the f word is used more than 350 times during that movie lol. I also remember seeing de niro in a film called the fan which was quite good.

Casino. I remember when I was younger I was looking forward to watching it on TV for about a week, then the day it came on I did something really naughty and wasn't allowed to watch it, I was so gutted!

He is great in Jackie Brown, as someone else has already posted. What I like about his role is how he's playing a bit more of a "background" character to what you'd normally expect - in spite of this, he still tends to be the centre point of all the scenes he's in. Cracking film and great soundtrack.

Heat, I love it. That scene with Al in the cafe is brill. Also when he is telling his girlfriend that he would just walk away, then actually does later in the film, excellent.

His best film is Godfather 2, but his best performance is Taxi Driver.

I'm also a big fan of Brazil although he's hardly in it and gives an 'eccentric' performance.

As others have mentioned King of Comedy is an under-seen little gem whose message gets ever more prescient.

Didn't see anything happen ? Where did you see something happen ?

Saw Casino last night, but turned off after about 20 minutes, quite slow-moving.

So, top 3 Robert De Niro films, so far :

1. Heat
2. Meet The Fockers
3. Cape Fear

Didn't like Men of Honour or Casino and haven't yet seen the Godfather or Raging Bull - will do within the next couple of weeks.

It was a close one for 3rd place between Cape Fear and Goodfellas - both excellent films, but Cape Fear just did it.

What just happened was out last year or the year before and was about a film executive trying to get other peoples films made in Hollywood...he's a player a safe pair of hands, as usual, but isn't having a great year...an insight into a working life of a top executive in the dog eat dog commercial world. It is actually a remake of another Hollywood film..I guess its their industry's equivalent of navel gazing. For the red-blooded film goer there is a kind hearted groupie who lifts his flagging spirits as only well cast actresses can.

If I am honest, meet the parents. Even though I am a huge boxing fan and Raging Bull was one of the better fact-based films on boxing. Not a big fan of gangster pics.

Too many to mention here, but Goodfella's was brilliant; excellent support from Joe Pesci, Analyze this and it's sequel, Analyze That, Deerhunter, what I've seen of it anyway and Heat. His comical performances are very good as well. He has a brilliant supporting role in Stardust as a camp pirate and his performance as Renegade Heating Engineer Harry Tuttle was just super. The high point of the film in my humble opinion. I have yet to see Taxi Driver though.

His performance in the average Night and The City film is outstanding and overlooked.

Godfather 2 and King of Comedy for me though....
