View Full Version : Palais / Locarno London Road
Drove past there today and saw that the building is being knocked down.
Its got to be a good 8-10 years since I've been but it certainly made we well up seeing it being knocked to bits. Had some wonderful nights in there in the period 90-94. My all time best night out was had in there NYE 1991. Great nights as Jam Factory etc.
A sad day for me today.
I heard they were knocking down the building, but keeping the facade (and presumably building something new behind it).
Is that because it's a listed building? Does anyone know if it is?
Also, if it is a listed building, how did they every get away with painting the entire lot black? It looks truly horrid. Hopefully not for much longer.
goldenfleece 27-07-2005, 17:42 I am sure that in the style of modern urban living, good taste will prevail and the facade will be sandblasted back to its former glory. At least, I hope so. Watch this space!

Good point
The black paint job ruined the building
Carborundum 27-07-2005, 19:09 Is this what used to be the Bed club ? Do hope they keep it - its an d interesting and unique building in the area - perhaps paint it a colour other than black though - any suggestions ?
fnkysknky 27-07-2005, 19:59 Well there's a big hole in the wall next to the entrance now so doesn't look like they're keeping it.
its going to be part of the new student accommodation they are building behind at the moment:)

That is realy sad news.
I was hoping that the Facade would be cleaned up and the beautiful original terracotta and chinese style pagoda revealed.
I'm sure that much of the back of the building was of little value but the front has been an interesting landmark of the city for 90 years. Infact my parents first met there at the Locarno Ballroom, and so did many others. :(
I remember the place as the Music Factory, mixed memories but some good times with good friends over the years.
James_pol 29-07-2005, 16:53 Is this the building that was most recently 'Bed'?
Didn't know that place had such history
muddycoffee 29-07-2005, 17:06 Yes it was originally Lansdowne cinema.
There are some things about it on my lost cinemas of sheffield website, which has been contributed to by many forummers and other people.
Lost cinemas - Lansdowne (http://www.rocknroll.f9.co.uk/cinemas/cinephoto.html)
And here on an information table (http://www.rocknroll.f9.co.uk/cinemas/cine.xml)
The Top Of the Pops was held there in 30 years ago but regulars weren't allowed in [boo]
miss_berty 29-07-2005, 17:34 ah gutted! I loved it as bed.....never sure why they closed it as it was popular and I'm sure, as it was owned by republic/gatecrasher ppl they could have afforded to keep it open :(
more flats.....
poimaster 30-07-2005, 16:48 it was closed down cos the sewage system was the original one that was installed when the place was built 90 years ago! I dont think it could take the bombardment the Bed audience gave it!
The pipes burst and the place got covered in sewage and to fix the problem would cost more than the place was worth so they cut their losses. Dont balame GC for doin that but I will miss place non the less. :-(

pete_jim 11-11-2005, 11:37 I think there is a planning application in todays Telegraph to turn this building (facade) into........student flats!
Wow, I can't believe it either. Going back 15 years now, i remember my first visit to The Jam Factory. It was the first ever 'House' club i ever went to and proud of it.
I remember it clear as day walking through the double doors on the inside, looking up at all the people with their hands in the air going mental on the platform around the dancefloor. I got a buzz from it straight away, cos i'd never seen anything like this before. That was it then; i was hooked.
Just a few moments i'd like to share with ya'all:
 Dave Seaman - Dropping 'Rhythm is a Mystery' at any point during the night.
;) K-Klass - Boxing Day on the podium playing live. Not so long after, are heared to be kicked out of Top of the Pops' dressing room (before even going on stage) for snorting 'illegal substances'.
 The Music Factory nights - when the facade was painted white and looked absolutely awesome. Especially when there was a queue right round the corner (both ends).
 Love2Be - With Marc Black. Best promoter i've always thought. The place was rammed every week without fail and he always seemed to be into what he was doing. Good man.
:| The Music Factory - With Charlie Chester taking over. A fair few quid rumoured to have been spent on the place, but i remember the only difference was seeing a few drapes in there. Thinking back now, maybe it was under, over and around the place that was worked on. I didn't have a clue about the sewage. Got to say though, if i ever had a drink of water from the toilets in there, i was guaranteed to wake up Monday morning with a sore throat. Weird but true...
After that, The Factory went slowly downhill with the decor (in my opinion), looking grubby and in need of a refurbishment on the inside, and painting any other colour than BLACK on the outside.
Who would've thought that 15 years on a venue like The Factory would be visible no more, and all that was left of it was 'House Music Memories'. Definitely not me. Just like the Hacienda in Manchester.
Let's hope any other favourite venues have 'Sound' foundations eh?
goldenfleece 12-11-2005, 17:32 This should be in the HISTORY section really......anyway the last time I went in there I worked as a DJ, playing Grease, Sat night Fever and DOnna Summer records...........it was 1978 and full of plastic plam trees and called TIFFANY's.......oh my God, long time ago.......
