View Full Version : Greatest Icon of Pro-Wrestling: SF Members Decide
Every year wrestling publications pick their top 50 or top 500 in the grappling business, but I want to know who the users of the forum think is the greatest man to ever don a spandex outfit and climb into the squred circle.
Whether you're a lifelong fan or just someone who remembers World of Sport on ITV...get your vote in and tell me why you love big sweaty men getting up close and personal!

Did there used to be a wrestler from Bradford called Les Kellet ?
I used to like to watch him as he was always making genuinely funny comments throughout the bout----------maybe it was his technique for putting his opponent off-------make 'em laugh and then kill 'em !!

Les Kellet is an absolute legend. Fantastic entertainer.
RE:the poll, Hulk Hogan is simply the biggest Icon in Wrestling history, and that will never change.
Austin comes in a distant second.

Quite. I still think the poll only needs one name though.
It should simply allow you to choose between Hogan and 'other'.

The Undertaker's getting old nowadays, he needs to retire soon and pass the torch on so to speak..
He did "kill off" that Muhammad Hassan bloke at the last WWE PPV event though, they wanted to axe his character due to complaints regarding the "controversial" nature of his recent segments on WWE TV.
PC Brigade gone mad IMO :loopy:

Thanks for info. about Les Kellet. Now I'm re-assured the memory cells are still there somewhere !
I spent about 4 years in Bradford and to me , Les Kellet not only represented the , "good " side of wrestling but seemed to be a typical Bradfordian as well--------dry humour.....understating things .......etc...
As you said , a great entertainer .

Indeed, any of the uninitiated should make the effort to see him in action.
I know he appears on the recent ITV DVD about British Wrestling, and that they sometimes show world of sport on the Wrestling Channel on Sky.

Kellet was a farmer who wrestled in his spare time, or a wrestler who farmed in his spare time...no one was quite sure which!
Though he played the clown in the ring he was regarded as a genuine hard man and accorded a lot of respect among his peers.
One story about him recounts how he was bitten on the hand by one of his cows and turned up to wrestle with the offending appendage swollen to five times its normal size. Rather than take the night off and do something sensible like say go to the local casualty ward, Kellet enlisted the help of one of the less squeamish wrestlers in the back of the arena and had him stamp on his hand until the puss spurted out. He then went and wrestled as if nothing were amiss.:gag: :loopy: :help:

In the case of the guy who brought the Eugene character to life you have to be a better than average worker whom the WWE deems to not "have the look" of a marketable comodity and be used in roles such as Doink the Clown for years and then finally be cast as a comedy character that draws attention to the fact that the wrestling business is always twenty years behind the mainstream and that Vince Macmahon has a strange sense of humour.

And the running on the spot whilst pumping his arms in the air!
Then there were the moments which Gorilla Monsoon described as the Warrior "Talking to his gods", which usually translated as the 'roided oaf forgetting what was supposed to happen next and stalling for time while his one remaining fried braincell struggled to remember which of the four moves was next! :loopy:

Hulk hogan was a fake, especially due to all those good movies he's made!
Shirley Crabtree is cool, I saw him wrestle along with Giant haystacks and Alan Kilby at the Rotherham Civic centre in 1986. I loved it. The only American wrestler I ever liked was Ultimate Warrior. Why are the above mentioned not in the poll?
wrestling is far too commericalised now( like everything else, even birthdays!)

Alan Kilby tends to play more Pool nowadays than wrestle. Shaking hands with him after a frame can be quite painful.
LellyBee 28-07-2005, 21:52 Mick Foley - he is god, read his autobiography and absolutely loved the guy.
Eddie Guerrero- agile ability, even when not on mainstream or PPV, this guy wrestles just for the sheer love of it.

Where's the option for Kendo Nagasaki? Showin' me age there. Bring back Dickie Davies. The wrestling was even crappier then than it is now. Hilarious stuff. Unintentionally, of course.
George Kidd and Les Kellett.
George was as slippery as an eel and could put his self in a hold and give the other guy the advantage and still get out of it with ease.
Les Mr entertainment played the fool and even got the most mild mannered wrestler mad because of his antics.

Apart from get lucky with his gimmick and be able to work a decent match at a snail's pace, there's little else that the Mark "Undertaker" Calloway has really contributed to the wrestling industry. Compared to the names on the poll he's small-fry!
Antonio Inoki, for example, founded New Japan ProWrestling which is still one of the top promotions in the world. He also championed prowrestling the world over bringing it to communist China. Inoki fought Muhammed Ali in the seventies and was elected to the Japanese parliament where he was the first elected representative of a capitalist power to meet with Fidel Castro (god knows what they talked about!).

Ric Flair's in at least his late 50s if not 60s.. And I'm sure Hogan's in his 50s.
Mark "Undertaker" Calloway was 40 last year, so he's not THAT old.. But anti-Undertaker idiots are saying he's too old and should "job" (lose on purpose) to Randy Orton at Summerslam and promptly hang up the tights... :loopy:

I wouldn't advocate Undi pacling it in as I'm sure that he has a good few years left in him if the WWE allow him to keep up his relaxed schedule and give him the time he needs to recouperate between matches.
But there are some points on which he could be more useful to the company such as entertaining the idea of jobbing for up and coming wrestlers.
The truth is that there are precious few veterans in the WWE who have a balanced view of the relationship between the green newbies and the seasoned professionals.
There are the political egomaniacs like Triple H who'll sabotage a promising younger wrestlers chances to strengthen themselves. And there are always the bullying types be they physical (i.e. Bob Holly) or verbal (i.e. John "Bradshaw" Layfield) who berate the rookies constantly and even put them at risk in the ring.
Most of these guys seem to be obsessed with the idea that every rookie has to "pay their dues" in the business before they are accepted. But even when the hapless newcomer has swallowed all the abuse the veterans still tend to regard them with slightly less disdain than they would somehing they just scraped off the bottom of their shoe.
If the Undertaker has a reduced schedule and all the other perks then that has to be traded off against the fact that there are many younger wrestlers working the usual hectic WWE lifestyle who could really use the benefit of working with and even (shock, horror) pinning a veteran of the Undertaker's standing in the business.
And before anyone tells me that loosing to a guy like Randy Orton would damage the Undertaker's image, just remember that The Rock jobbed clean for Brock Lesnar and it never dulled the chants that the fans scream out whenever he pops up once in a blue moon!
I can't believe that Hulk Hogan is still out there leading the field!
Just in time for his Summerslam match with HBK...anyone else predicting the slowest match in HBK's career since he was saddled with that useless lump Sid Vicious?:hihi:

Meh, the only reason Randy Orton even has a job in the WWE is cos his Dad is the "Legend" Cowboy Bob Orton... And you can tell Randy's genuinely scared of the Taker, look how he practically sh*ts himself on Smackdown when Undertaker's music and video comes on...
The Rock was the same at first, getting by on the legacy and the fact that his Dad was the legendary "Soul Man" Rocky Johnson.. But then he developed his own persona and got "over" for his own talents and not just for being the son of a legend.

Reaper71 17-08-2005, 07:50 Earlier on this thread someone appeared to claim that the guy who invented the Eugene character was also Doink the Clown (unless I was reading it wrong). Eugene is played by Nick Dinsmore, who came to WWE television from Ohio Valley Wrestling. He was never in the WWE as Doink.
Also, Hulk Hogan's reality :heyhey: show will air in the UK on VH1 starting in (I think) October.
Oh, and Ric Flair is 56.
But to get back to the point of this thread, it really depends on how you want people to decide. If you are judging this on who the greatest "wrestler" is, who the greatest in ring performer is (because its not always the same thing), or simply who the greatest "icon" is.
If its just the latter, then I am utterly amazed that anyone could be surprised that Hulk Hogan is streets ahead.
You can debate the greatest wrestler of all time, you can even debate the greatest in-ring performer of all time, but there cannot be any debate about the most iconic figure in wrestling. Its Hulk Hogan by a mile.
No-one has ever, or will ever, be able to reach the level he is at. No-one will ever be such a figurehead for the entire industry, both for those in it and for the mainstream, for as long as he has been, or be central to such massive changes. Hogan was not only the poster-boy for the complete revolution of the business in the early 80s, but he was also central to the next step-change, the revolution towards more edgy weekly live television show which was the Monday Night Wars.
Reactions do not lie - just watch this year's Hall of Fame induction.
Hogan would not make a top 100 best "wrestlers" list, but he is the most recognised name wrestling has ever or will ever see. Whatever he is now in the ring, however long ago he should have retired, does nothing to detract his status. To seriously pick anyone else as the greatest icon is simply indefensible.
And Liencam should know the Warrior had more moves than that - I listed them for him !
:D

Nick "Eugene" Dinsmore played the part of the pro-wrestling clown in the gimmick battle royale the WWE booked a year or so back.
The original Doink was another worker, but Dinsmore was the last person to portray the clown on WWE programming.
Reaper71 18-08-2005, 06:46 Doink has been played by several different wrestlers, one of whom was the guy who also played Skinner. The original Doink was Matt Borne.
If you are referring to the Gimmick Battle Royal which took place at Wrestlemania 17, then the idea that Dinsmore played Doink during that match came about as a rumour a while after the event. But it isn't true.
However, now I think of it, you are actually right in that Dinsmore did make a couple of appearances as Doink - during the 2003 Vengeance PPV as part of the APA Bar Room Brawl, and shortly afterwards on Smackdown. When I said he was never Doink I was referring to the periods when Doink was in the WWE on a more regular basis.
But anyway, lets not steer the debate away from the main topic - why the good people of this board are right and Hulk Hogan is the greatest icon in wrestling history.

I bow to your superior knowledge of wrestling clowns!
Have we plumped for the Hulkster because we get a warm glow when we remember all those leg-drops from Wrestlemanias of yesteryear?
Or have we ended up with the wrinkley old egomaniac becasue the users voting are too young to remember the thrill of chanting: "Easy, easy, easy!" as Big Daddy's corpulant frame left the canvas to deliver the wonderous belly-flop?
Reaper71 21-08-2005, 18:27 Thank you.
I'm thinking of moving on to other members of the circus next. I have Steve Austin down for the Ringmaster, and those people who remember Chris Jericho from his pre-WWE days will know he can go in as the Lion-tamer, but I'm a bit short on trapeze artists and high-wire walkers ! :D
I'm sure they had Ricky Steamboat breathing fire at one time as part of his "Dragon" gimmick...add to that the fact that there were several guys in the eighties who's gimmick pretty much boiled down to the old circus strongman act such as Dino Bravo and The Warlord.
Come to think of it, that's the same gimmick they have pinnochio's elder brother Chris Masters pulling off to this day!:hihi:

Welcome to the forum mate!
All those that are arguing about the Undertaker getting too old... its not even the same guy... I'm almost certain the guy currently wrestling isn't the guy I remember from about 13yrs ago when I first watched wrestling... Wrestlemania 5 or something
The Undertaker has changed at least a couple of times I'm sure...
Anyways the greatest icon has to be Hulk Hogan, mainly due to the fact everyone knows of him, from little kids to most adults... even most people that don't or haven't watched wrestling...
I'd say 2nd would be Bret The Hitman Heart...
personally old school wrestlers I'd have to say I really loved The Legion Of Doom :D you guys should pick up the Legends Of Wrestling games for PS2 ;)

The only other worker to ever wrestler under the name of the Undertaker was the infamous "Underfaker" portrayed by Mark Calloway's old buddy from Smokey Mountain Wrestling, Brian Lee. Ted Dibiase managed him and ludicrously claimed him to be the original despite the fact that he was six inches shorter than Calloway and looked nothing like him!
I tried Legends of Wrestling and found the control system to be bobbins...add to that the fact that the last version of the game had a pants CAW and no unlockable features in a world where the WWE are including more and more of the in-favour "WWE Legends" (Vader has just signed for this so expect to see him in a game sooner rather than later) in their own games the Legends series just can't compete.

He's gone back to his Old School gimmick now, his Biker character got "Killed off" at Survivor Series in 2003 in a "Buried Alive" match, and then he returned as the original "Dead Man" at Wrestlemania 20 last year against Kane, and won (Cos the Undertaker ALWAYS wins at Wrestlemania, even against Randy Orton this year)

Samoa Joe is indeed good.. He's currently the only Samoan wrestler in the business whose sole purpose isn't squashing jobbers (people who get paid to make the likes of Umaga and the "Great" Khali look powerful).
The whole thing is so fake though, people only get hurt by accident. I can understand kids watching it and being entertained (it's in the same league as Power Rangers with the silly costumes) but adults, why ?

Yeah - Alan Kilby - he was the deaf wrestler - see him quite a lot in our local club. My Fiancee's mate Mick used to spar with him.

AtticusFinch 18-07-2007, 19:31 What? You wanna know who the greatest ever wrestler is? What? Is that right? What? Did I mishear you? Is that supposed to be funny? What? What?
OK I'll tell you who the greatest ever wrestler is? What? You want me to tell you? What? Did I just hear booing? Was that some boos for Stone Cold Steve Austin? What? You'd best put those fingers down son before I give you a cup of shut-the-hell-up and open up the biggest can of whoopass that SheffieldForum has ever seen!
Now I often get asked "Stone Cold, who do you think is the greatest wrestler of all time?" So I take some time to think about it and open one beer (what?), two beers (what?), three beers (what?), four beers (what?) and then stomp a mudhole in that son-of-a-b*tch and walk it dry, before nailing him with the Stone Cold Stunner. And that's the bottom line, cos Stone Cold says so!
:D
Lord above...who dredged this one up from the depths?!?
Shirley Crabtree is "Big Daddy's" real name?
I remember Saturday wrestling programmes on tv.
For nostalgia sake, I will vote for "Big Daddy"! Yay! :hihi:
When WWF was broadcast on satelite tv, it wasn't that great any more. A little bit too mean, and less of the fun element was involved. Boo... :P
bjshooter 19-07-2007, 15:08 I would say that most people would recognise the undertaker or Hogan as been wrestlers so would have to be one of them.
I think Jeff Hardy as I used to have the biggest crust on him ever
foxydebs 19-07-2007, 23:12 [QUOTE=Azrael316;2449397]Hogan?? Hogan?? He is the WORST wrestler in the world. He has less moves than 'The Warrior'.
