wow that was quick! hi tim, there must be loads of people out there who are sick of just playing at home! what kind of stuff do you like?

TimmyR
27-07-2005, 15:14
I like nice chords. Big fan of jeff buckley. he's a genius. I play a lot of stuff really, jazzy stuff, chordy stuff, soloy stuff but mostly my own ramblings which are of course based on things I have heard throughout my life. I have a wide range of influences - to be honest though what I listen is quite different to what I play. I am quite versatile though!

Are you the 22nd phil or is that the number of guitars you own?

AndrewC
27-07-2005, 15:37
I like chords. I'm rubbish at plucking/picking.

phil22
27-07-2005, 15:37
22 is my birthday! i,ve got far more guitars than that!
i used to be a drummer but have hit 40 now so lugging drums round was getting a bind, have aways dabbled with guitar am just an average rythm\chordster really. thought an acoustic guitar club would be a laugh and great to swap ideas etc.

 Hi all, Spitty here. I thought no-one was interested and can't believe all the input. I am still looking at getting a regular room in a quiet pub if any one is interested as I think if it takes off, houses may get a bit cramped. I live in the Crystal Peaks area of Sheffield and was looking at getting somewhere near or just off the motorway for easy access (I know a couple of places that might, one at Junction 30 and also at Junction 35).

I am 40 something and my tastes vary and I have not been at it long but have an S&P Cedar 6 and a S&P Cedar 12 (Birthday gift) and somtnimes play with a couple of biker buddies. Let me know if you want to get together (I have a car too)

Its not that big! Lift would be gratefully received. I live in hillsborough by the way but can cover a good few miles on my bike with little difficulty - although the dij may be an issue then.

Timbo (crikey not been called that for a while...) (not said crikey for a while either)

dont try biking it to doncaster with a guitar and a digeredoo!
hi spitty, welcome, we could start at mine and progress to a pub if it works out, access to beer is always useful, i have a small pa which may come in useful.

Hi there. Wednesday or Thursday really. I play mostly on Wednesday nights so no change there and teach a father and son basic guitar on Thursday but could probably change that if it became a regular thing. I would be glad to give a lift if required. Where are we going to play? Definitely sounding groovy.:)

I have to work for the early part of the evening anyway so would have to be about 8 onwards. I work in City Centre - at the Hallamshire Hospital so am fairly central for picking Tim up on my way out. We're going to Phil's first, see how we get on, play all of his guitars lol ;o) Am confirming details with him. Shall we say Thursday? I'll PM you my contact details.

 Hi everyone
Just thought I'd let you know that I use chordie.com for most of my music (bet you all use it anyway) as it's kept fairly up to date and you can transpose on line if you need to.
Some of the words leave a bit to be desired but you can get tabs as well if you use em.

Hey up spitmeister, that's handy to know thanks. I use all sorts of different websites and then sometimes I just listen to the songs and make it up as I go along anyway!!! And sometimes that's a BAD idea lol... :?

Spitty
29-07-2005, 17:41
I used to know someone who made up his own chords as he went along (too talented if you ask me). I used to say "what the hell was that" and he would answer " it's Gm6 diminished ISH. Does anyone know what ISH is??? :gag:

Definitely nothing wrong with making up your own, just keep it happy :D I totally respect people who can make their own music.

phil22
29-07-2005, 17:55
in second hinversion!!!!
the only thing i know about diminished chords is that they exist,
i,m playing a crafter guitar at work, has got the origional strings on it (2 1\2 years) an got filled with water in a flood, sounds like its got a loaf of bread up it but plays great.

Hoofie
29-07-2005, 18:07
Diminished chords eh? Hmmm I don't know many of those lol - better warn you lads I'm not much of a tablature girl I just tend to go with the flow and I don't know the names of a lot of the chords I play lol...oh and I avoid E flat. What the hells that chord all about anyway??!?

And as for you Philippe you seem to know a lot about guitars and I so don't! Prepare to have your brains picked..I'll bring a plectrum lol :) :)

Spitty
29-07-2005, 18:18
Ooer, what's a crafter then? Sounds electric. I sold an Eko Ranger 12 not long ago (too bright for my eyes,,, read ears) and got a Simon & Patrick Cedar 12 to go with my 6 (luvvvly). Can't play either but I try and they make even the worse player sound good. Have we decided on a meet time for Thursday? Hoofie, can you PM or text me where you'd like to meet up. Ta everso.

A and C?

A6 is X - A (R) - E - A - C# - F#

That is,

E string - don't play
A string - open, root note
D string - second fret = E
G string - second fret = A
B string - second fret = C#
E string - second fret = F# - hence a VIth interval away from the root (A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G)
(R. II, III, IV, V, VI, VII)

Where do you get a natural C from?

phil22
30-07-2005, 09:34
its an alien in d, works for me tho!! an thats all that matters

phil22
30-07-2005, 09:38
is it acting as an acceptable substitute for v11

Ousetunes
30-07-2005, 09:51
By dropping the C# a semi-tone to a C the chord you are playing is Am6.

I do agree however that sixth chords are appealing whether major or minor.

The Am6 is a great chord to play before 'landing' on E.

Prominent chord in linger by the cranberries. I don't really like the chord on its own though.

On of my fave 'set' of chords are the ones used in both 'wish You were here' by pink floyd and 'wonderwall' by oasis.

My favourite chord of all is probably Cmaj7 :D

If we're to get on to favourite chords I think mine is a minor ninth. Probably Dm9. I have no idea where it should fit, but sometimes it just does.

as long as you know those majors and minors - you're sorted. The rest are all just embelishments. A seventh here and there can add a lot mind you.

Didn't neil in the Young Ones once describe Dm as the saddest chord ever?

Erm, favourite chord? Don't know about a favourite but I do like diminished chords and some augmented chords are pleasant. Jazzy ninths are interesting (as are elevenths etc,).

However, I have to admit that despite playing the thing for 22 years, I still steer well clear of anything written in the key of Eb (okay, okay, so it's reach for the capo time. Lazy I know).

Hi all,
It's nice to see a lively music thread happening. I started singing and playing guitar a few years ago, I'm still a bit of a 'shouter' but I reckon my voice is mellowing by now.

Have any of you managed to meet up yet? I notice there was suddenly a lot of interest once this thread got started.
Does anyone in here go to the jam sessions at the Deep End (Hillsborough), I'm usually there every Sunday afternoon.

About favourite chords... I didn't know I had one until I started learning some songs and discovered Cmaj7 while learning Year of the Cat (Al Stewart). I then started noticing it in a few other songs I really liked.

hi, glad your interested, as you can see were trying to organise a regular get together for acoustic guitar fans, were starting at my house and hoping to get enough regulars to move on to a pub or something like that,
would be great to get a good cross section there from beginners to the expierienced, and above all get the people who only play in a locked room out of it! (ie, me)
there is more activity than you see on the site but a lot of it happens by pm.
let us know if your interested

I play almost entirely to myself at home. In fact, having the place to myself has been a major factor in me daring to start singing.
I usually get up when I'm at the Deep End, Whether I feel confident or not. Since I turned 40 I no longer care about making a fool of myself.
I've been a drummer until recently. In fact, my ex remarked that I tend to treat the guitar like it was a drum kit. The same probably applies to my singing ( if it doesn't come, then force it).

But yes, I'm definately interested in any jam sessions or whatever.

The most fun I've had happens to be on the spur of the moment. Take last night for example. Back room of Fagans and there's a group of about 5 musicians.

They played some fine stuff, mainly Irish but also 1930's stuff (kind of scat music) and so I joined in, grabbed a friend's Taylor (what a guitar!) and sung a couple of songs.

Likewise, I've been up at the Three Merry Lads and ended up 'jamming' with one or two other guitarists. It's great fun, especially following another guitarist who's playing a song you've never heard before.

It's a great way to learn new songs.

Spitty

Hi all

I did the same at the bike club the other night. Took the new 12 to show the lads and 4 of us ended up playing whatever someone knew (two 12's, one 6 and an accoustic bass). Some can only strum, most are better than me but who cares when you're having fun.

Looking forward to tonight. See you there.

Jakell

YOU NEED TO PRACTICE?? I don't think so, sounded magic to my ears, duets here we come (get some songs together for next time that you think I may know if you like remembering I'm an old sod). I thought all the playing was excellent and a certain young man should be on the stage with those talents. Nice one Phil for putting up with us, drinking all your beer and letting us handle those lovely 6's

Ha ha, thanks for the vote of confidence, spitty. Was good to meet you guys last night. And despite everyone claiming they need to practice/haven't been playing long etc etc, I thought the standard was good! Particularly the singing. Singing is an area i certainly lack confidence - i've always left that up to other people to do.

Maybe next time if we all learn a song or two we could jam around the chords a bit? Anyone any suggestions?

Cheers to Phil for the house and the use of some superb guitars and to Kate for the lift. :)

Ah yes a third thanks to Phil for the use of his house (and his Takamines in their thousands....well...nearly..lol!)

I guess if we pick a song each then that's 4 to start with eh? Ho hum..now I need to think..it involves effort..ouch...

As for the singing bit - I'm up for Duets Monsieur Spitmeister - old or new, you decide.

Happy surfin' Timbo :)

Hi there. We are but simple folk just trying to make some music. All are welcome but unfortunately we are a bit short on space. We are hoping to find a place to meet say once a week (pub or something similar) but if there are not too many we can do in each other's houses. We look forward to hearing your Tanglwood and if you have a voice to go with it, that's great (we like to sing too).
Keep an eye on the forum as the next meet is at mine next Thursday (Crystal Peaks area) and I'll PM the address out later.

www.spaceformusic.co.uk - Attic studios in Shalesmoor are excellent - only 20 pounds for 3 hours and fantastic facilities / run by nice people

Hope all goes well

Thanks for the info on the rooms. Certainly a bit beyond my talents to use professional gear to make a noise but the rest of you would certainly make some beautiful music. I hope you all have your songs prepared for tomorrow? If not, we have instant access to thousands on the web.
Hope to see you all tomorrow.

Hoofie can't make it which kinda means I won't be coming either as its a bit far away to cycle. And I have quite a lot to sort out for my weekend. WIll make a concerted effort next week though. I may even bring a recording of my band...

well chaps, I'm happy as I couldnt make it (shambala preparations and all that)

practice room in shalesmoor next thursday?

We could get a kitty going (I have friends that use them and they can vouch for them being very nice)

:)

how about a theme for each night?

Maybe an artist to base work on or a genre or a key? something like that to make the sessions a little more directional?

just suggestions, :)

Hi practice rooms are a good idea, but I'm not sure we really need one. Its not like we'll be making that much noise! Depends how many people want to come I guess. I find that you can tend to get more done in peoples house - more comfortable.

And I can't do thursday.

Hi all. For the time being I think it may be worth sticking with houses. Felt out of my league big time with the talent that was there last week and may have to leave you guys to it (you could form a band) but will give it a few more goes to see how I get on. Are we still on for next week? We need to change the day so hows about Tues. Are we still at mine? Let me know.

Spitty, I think you are underestimating your ability. You have a great voice and you said you've only been playing guitar for two years. You should have heard me after two years, sounded like I was sawing up the guitar. Its all about practice and what better forum to do that but with another bunch of guitarists! I for one certainly dont think I'm anywhere near being good yet, but then i don't think there are many musicians who could say they felt they'd learned everything...

We may need to get some direction to our sessions tho, otherwise it might become a bit of a cacophony!
