View Full Version : Who is the best athlete/sports star of all time
ReginaldD 27-07-2005, 13:07 After Lance's seventh tour win many are debating who this is personnaly i feel this Lance Armstrong is the best ever athlete/sports star to win seven tours for anyone is amazing but to come back from cancer and win win seven tours is unbelievable. But you probably dont agree with me so what do you think
ReginaldD 27-07-2005, 13:10 Just realised i didn't put any women on the poll but couldnt think of any worth enough to share a place in there with Lance. So can anybody think of anyone maybe Mia Hamm?
WHHHOOOO!!!
Nature Boy Ric Flair for me baby!
To be the man, you have to beat the man!
muddycoffee 27-07-2005, 15:24 Surely it's Dr Grace,
Cricketer, sprinter and Doctor
He could never be out because he was too entertaining a batsman.
He is so legendary that the Grace Gates at Lords Cricket Ground are named after him.
SpiderPete 27-07-2005, 18:36 For me Michael Schumacher ...... F1's greatest driver, when Ferrari were good he could win in any condition, esp in wet weather.
The only reason he isnt at the top this year is Ferrari is not as good this year, he could retire now with the money he has got. I bet he wishes he was in a Renault can now.
But ... my all time great is missing  ... its of course Martina Navratilova the best tennis playe ever, even at 47/48 she is still playing Wimbledon.

So is it more to do with the car or the driver?
An old arguement, but for me Senna was the best wet weather driver.
Donnington - '93 - atrociously wet conditions.
In a vastly inferior Mclaren Senna went from position 4 on the grid to position 5 by the first corner, to position 1 as he crossed the line at the end of the first lap! He won the race but not before lapping everyone else (including Shuey).
He also recorded 4 straight poles and wins in '91 when again the Mclaren was not the strongest car.
He also spent a good few years with an equally competent/competitive co-driver (Prost), and lack of team tactics.... something Schuey has never done(?).
Schuey's record speaks for itself, but I will always feel there has been long periods in his career when he has not been tested/stretched (either by a competitor in an equally sorted car, or by an equally competitive team mate). He's been able to walk away with most his poles/victories.
Just my opinion.
ianbrownfan 28-07-2005, 09:07 It's a tough one. The likes of Pele and Muhammed Ali were great sportman in their own sport just through their natural abilities.
It needs to be someone who has done unbelievable well like Redgrave, Carl Lewis etc.
Tricky one!
Tommmyyy 28-07-2005, 13:54 It's a good list but there are so many candidates you've missed off:
Emil Zatopek (5k 10k & Marathon in same olympics)
Messner (Best mountaineer ever)
Merckx (Better than Lance all round)
Obree (As a character, sportsman and human he's just amazing)
Gebresallasse (Best distance runner in history)
Michael Johnson (Best sprinter in history)
Beryl Burton (Broke men's cycling records for decades)
There's more, I'm sure.
Agent Gypo 28-07-2005, 17:53 Although I don't have any interest in cycling, I'll go for Lance Armstrong.
The way he's come back from cancer to achieve so much is amazing.

 spot on! for someone to come back and do what he has is amazing the will power to win on both levels, the determination, and courage its encouraging to us all!
I voted Muhammad Ali. He revolutionised sports as a whole like nobody else. And for me is one of the reasons why there is so much money and TV involved in sports to this day.
i voted Ali becouse he could defeat you with his mind before he even hit you
And on another topic shumacher has never bin agood driver he won becouse of all the technology great drivers are Nigel Mansel and Senna they were great drivers. Shumachers true driving skills are now showing with the new regs in F1.

Wouldn't agree with that. You could argue that F1 cars were technologically superior before Senna died than they are now. Active suspension etc was taken away in the safety drive after his death.
Schumacher has enjoyed a superior car for a number of years and, allied with his undoubted ability, this has made him untouchable.
This year the Ferrari is suffering, and no matter how good a driver you are, you ain't gonna win the title in a crap car. But don't forget he's still 3rd in the championship.
I'd like to have seen him in the same car as Senna for a couple of seasons; no team orders and no preferential team treatment.

I agree with you totally.
Ali for me is the greatest sportsman that there ever will be.
Don_Kiddick 04-08-2005, 23:12 It's got to be Andy "The Viking" Fordham (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.999today.com/_res/2005/01/25/10173.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.999today.com/education/story/666.html&h=185&w=250&sz=13&tbnid=VFAJMcDsERgJ:&tbnh=78&tbnw=106&hl=en&start=2&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddarts%2Bplayers%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3De n%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG) without any doubt
the_rudeboy 06-08-2005, 22:32 Sir Steve Redgrave for me........five Olympic golds....remember thats only every 4 yrs. Lance comes in a close second.
For me Michael Schumacher ...... F1's greatest driver, when Ferrari were good he could win in any condition, esp in wet weather.
Jeez, the guy drives a car FFS.....and he's German. Bet The Stig would kick his ass!
For me it has to be Lance Armstrong.to win the hardest race in the world just once is an achievment in it's self.
But to win it year after year for 7 consecutive years is an absolute super human achievment.
Lance will truely be missed from the pelaton in the coming years, and every winner form now on will be judged on Lance's previous results.!!
