Well I'm really pleased. I've just got back from our Saturday group walk and D was allowed to have his muzzle off around other dogs for the last 10 minutes!

He just carried on playing like he does when he wears the muzzle and it was lovely to see him running around and playing with all the other GS and labradors (many who used to have to wear muzzles too). His favorite dog, a female ridgeback was not there today.

We still have a long way to go as he is still not great with strange dogs that we meet one on one but now we can walk him on the group walks for a little periods without a muzzle he shall hopefully get used to playing without biting and we will be one step closer to our goal of having him off lead around strange dogs and knowing that if they run up to him he won;t have a problem with it (still with muzzle as my nerves would not cope!)

It's so nice when your making progress instead of not getting anywhere!

Well done. All your hard work is paying off. He certainly a diffferent dog to the one I met almost 12 months ago. :)

I know that there is mixed feelings towards the training on the pets forum. We had tried everything else with no improvement and it is actually quite hard to find trainers willing to take them on and we found 1:1 training really did not do anything. I'm really glad we did as it's working better than anything else we have tried.

There were 4 GS today on the walk, 2 used to wear a muzzles :) There does seem to be a high number of GS in the classes also  so you'll be in good company. They are also one of D's favourite dogs to play with as they play nicely and are not too fast!

Wow, I can't believe a year has nearly gone so fast! Slow progress eh!

Well just got back from our dog walk today and D was really good. He was muzzle free all apart from the first 5 minutes. He's getting much better at telling other dogs to back off if he's not happy (doggy language = ignoring them/ looking away/ hiding behind me) without resulting to being nasty with it. :)

He did tell one dog to go away but was just a gentle 'get lost' nip and run away as the dog had been bothering him for a good few minutes. The other dog is lovely but is the type that always wants to play and does not read the signals the other dogs are giving off when they want to be left alone ... it's there to learn to stop annoying other dogs :) D had done everything he could ... ignored/ turned away/ and hid behind me.

Now just got to get him to be good around random dogs we meet. He's fine if they are introduced then let off together and then takes note of the go away signals if they don't want him (he will just ignore them too and get on with the walk).

Now not knowing any people with dogs I will be begging people I bump into on walks (with nice dogs) to walk next to them, so he realises dogs on new walks are not scary. Ideally I would then like to then let them off lead but I don't think people would be happy to let him run free with their dogs as the muzzle puts them off and I'm not willing to take any risks by taking it off as I would rather be safe then sorry. I think he has learnt to react as then they walk away faster and take the scary dog with them  So if a mad women comes up to you when your out walking your dog and asks to walk at the side of you for a while it's me

I would be happy with another dog wearing a muzzle around my dog. Theres a few on our local park that wear them but the owner of one lot has since told me its to stop them eating poo. :) Everyone has their reasons for it so dont worry what people think.

If your out my way id be more than happy to let my dog play with yours. If your can stand an annoying youngsta :)

Hehe, until I finally got it through to my dog that she can't just take food regardless of whether it's in a bin or someone's picnic - I seriously considered walking her on a muzzle.

In the end I went with lead walks in picnic - type areas and a long lead during the summer if there was lots of left over food in the park (dirty people). Then one day it clicked and she doesn't bother anymore!

Evei - I'd like to offer but unfortunately, T's just not confident enough to do any work like that :( She'd give off the wrong vibes and probably upset D more!

I'd love to take up the offer if your around graves park/ meersbrook/ millhouses/gleadless way. He can be a bit jumpy for the first 5 minutes but then settles and if he doesn't I'm happy to give it up as a bad job :) Can I ask what size dog you have? He is labrador size so a tiny dog would not be the best for him  and is your dog quite outgoing as I would not want to scare another dog, like Lotti says an unconfident dog would not be best :)

I used to love hearing about T's picnic snaffling  Glad you got it sorted.

Hes only a coocker spaniel so hes not huge.

Lots of people who know him say hes confidently submissive. He'll happerly run up to any dog but rather than leaping into play he starts by rolling on his back and letting them have a good sniff. Its his way of letting them know he means them no harm. Then he starts encouraging them to play. I quite like him doing this because it means he always gets off on the right foot with other dogs. Lottie knows us if you want an independant opinion on him ass im prob bias:)

I dont live round graves parks but we do often walk him there at weekends. ill let you know when we're next out that way.

That sounds good. I know helenasq from here has taken him out with her youngest King Charles Spaniel when she takes him out dog walking and they played in our back garden when they got back. Thanks!
