View Full Version : Hate Hallam Love Students in CIQ
Classic Rock 27-07-2005, 11:31 I spotted this last week and meant to mention it.
There's a building on Matilda Street, across from the Matilda Tavern nr the BBC on Shoreham St which has sheets hanging outside it with protest statements on it and even a picture of a tank. 'Hate Hallam Love Students' is one of the slogans
From what I can make out, the building was sold privately to Hallam University and the company that was occupying the premsies at the time didn't have the opportunity to bid for it or their tender wasn't considered.
They are now protesting by hanging these sheets outside the building, pasting statements to the walls and generally hanging their dirty laundry out in public for the world to hear about. I'm kinda surprised it's all still there a week later.
It makes quite a picture to see it!
poimaster 27-07-2005, 11:54 is that the place just down the road from gatecrasher?
Wondered what was goin on there. Sounds like they have been screwed over big time...anyone know any more details?
It's something to do with this: http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/02/305119.html
and this
http://www.rage-against-hallam.co.uk/
On the Hallam University internal message board, this was all seen as a bit of a joke. The "mass demos" they tried to organise when the HUBS opened only managed to amass a few people who kindly set fireworks off.
If there was something proven to be dodgy and underhand, then I think they'd have a point. But at the moment it just seems like a personal grudge from Mark Cartawick (who a WHOIS search shows registered the Adrenalin Studios website AND the Rage Against Hallam one.)
sheff_minx 27-07-2005, 12:13 I moved away from Matilda Street at the beginning of July and the flags etc have been there since the G8 thing was here a few months ago. Although at that time they were carrying out a rooftop protest aswel and police were there constantly.
There doesn't seem to be as much (if any) people presence there anymore though!
Classic Rock 27-07-2005, 12:31 Oh right! I only spotted them last week.

Not necessarily, had you thought of the possibility he was just a web designer helping out both groups. And anyway it's not exactly a secret of the links between Rage Against Hallam and Adrenaline studios.
When you were joking about this on your internal message boards did anyone carry out the same sort of research into conflicting interests of the groups mentioned on Rage Against Hallam.

Whoa, chill out :) don't shoot the messenger.
I was only reporting on what was being said at Hallam. I don't profess to know exactly what was going on. My side of the story came from the Hallam message boards. I didn't have the time or inclination to do any research of my own, as past experience with research into Government bodies has proved fruitless.
If anybody feels that they want to research what went on, contact the council citing the Freedom of Information Act and get some documents off them.
Good luck.

Sorry dude didn't mean that to come across as so snappy.
Just curious to know how aware Hallam students are of the issues, curse these internal message boards.
Incidentally my fave contradiction of the day comes from Rage Against Hallam
"Hallam's capitalist activity is damaging businesses "
I just hate students personally.
i dont really mind students its the the middle class ones slumming it on mummy and daddies money what make me want to:gag:
Had enough of Hallam University yet?
So have we!
This Building
This building was illegally sold to Hallam University in 1998.
It was not put out to tender by the council
Adrenalin Studios offer for the building was ignored.
Hallam have broken contractual agreements concerning the sale
And now sold it for a vast profit to Yorkshire Forward
Hallam's capitalist activity is damaging businesses in the CIQ
This building was illegally sold to Hallam University in 1998. It was not put out to tender by the council at the time of the sale. The council's only reasoning for selling to Hallam was their apparent bigger agenda. This agenda was to move Psalter Lane Art college to this site, this was one of the conditions of the sale. Not only have they not adhered to this, but have now sold the building and the large plot of land for a enormous profit to Yorkshire Forward (Y F. remember the NCPM, "National Centre for Popular Music" this was bought from the very same people, Hallam paid £1.4 Mil for it, it's cost to build was £20 Mil. There is crossfertilization on these boards of directors) Adrenalin Studios made a higher offer for the building and were completely ignored, Adrenalin have rented this building for 15 years and spent an enormous amount of money on it. Hallam should not be allowed to capitalise on such activity, damage businesses, abuse tax payers money, and ignor the needs of the CIQ (Cultural Industies Quarter).
Adrenalin want this building back !

Tis rather funny isnt it!
At the end of the day, SHU are a business venture just like these "Adrenalin Studios" (whom, I must admit, have never heard of). If the shoe were on the other foot I wonder if 'Adrenalin' would have done the same thing...
Yorkshire Forward may do something interesting with the place, who knows?
