Good choice. Amazing bloke. I reckon he could have gone on to do lots outside of F1, such was his charisma and intelligence. A very sad loss :(

Hard to compare though. One had the knowledge of being terminally ill and used that to push herself to some amazing feats, the other was the best in his field but had about a tenth of a second's warning of his imminent death.
Another one I should have mentioned from the same sport is Alex Zanardi, who lost both his legs in a crash and still made it back to a decent enough level. He's also aiming to compete in the 2012 paralympics in hand-cycling

Being a born red my sports heroes are Giggs, Scholes and Cantona. Eric was the catalyst that gave Man U their first title. Giggs and Scholes have been the soul of the team - local boys, not big signings, not flash Harrys. When mercenaries like Ronaldo and Tevez are just vague memories of what might have been for them, Giggs will be sleeping in a bed of medals, trophys and the adoration of the fans.
HeadingNorth 26-09-2009, 23:00 Being a born red my sports heroes are Giggs, Scholes and Cantona. Eric was the catalyst that gave Man U their first title.
That was some achievement, since their first title came almost sixty years before he was born.
totally agree about Giggsy, what a credit to football the man is. Loved Besty as well
another hero is Ian Botham, a superb all round cricketer, who liked a beer or two, who never gave anything less than 100% in the game of cricket
No Rugby players yet....?
How about Jonny Wilkinson? - cliche eprhaps but his work ethic and resolve in the face of years of injury are amazing, lets hope his current form wrans him a few England games.
Sergio Parisse. Who?! The Italian Number 8 - he'd walk into any world XV and has been carrying the Azzurri for years.
Jason Leonard - a prop who survived the transition from amatuer to professionalism, won a world cup, first prop to get 100 caps (IIRC) and never missed a game through injury. Legend.
That was some achievement, since their first title came almost sixty years before he was born.

HeadingNorth 29-09-2009, 11:30 Henry Cooper. He knocked down Cassius Clay didnt he ?:D
And it's always been debatable whether Clay's corner (I doubt he himself was involved) used "questionable tactics" to give Clay time to recover. Certainly, had he not had the extra time, he would have failed to come out for the next round and lost; was the extra time bought illegally, or was it genuine? Nobody knows.
I'm a little uncomfortable with describing any mere sportsman as a "hero," as it's the same word we use for those who lay down their lives for others, and nobody would ever argue that a sporting achievement is in the same league. However, it's the only word we have, and I don't think anyone here is being insulting to "real heroes" by using it. I prefer to talk of "sporting legends" myself, but it comes to the same thing.
Most of the people I'd like to mention have already come up.
flamingjimmy 29-09-2009, 13:52 Dennis Bergkamp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3n4CTLDn_w&feature=PlayList&p=2E3EA611FEC25D7F&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=4
David Seaman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whHyHXnLCIw
Scorer of the greatest goal of all time and maker of the greatest save of all time.

flamingjimmy 30-09-2009, 00:03 ..arsenal's fan...
No actually, Sheffield United fan, I hated Seaman when he made that save. It's only with hindsight that I realised how awesome it was. I was goalkeeper for my school when Seaman was playing for England and he was my hero for sure.
And Bergkamp? Well he's just pure class isn't he?
kerouac_zoso 30-09-2009, 10:03 oh yes ... all right,flamingjimmy ....

Bobby Robson for Obvious reasons and strangly enough- Chris Armstrong- a blades players whokept on getting injured time and time again- was offered ALOT of money to give it up again and again and he refused- fought back to fitness and worked his way back into the first team- now playing at reading- top lad.

johntimber 21-10-2009, 07:14 I have only one choice in sport, it's soccer and my favorite plyer is "Christiano Ronaldo", A Golden Ball boy. I really like to watch him while playing.:)
Zomoniac 21-10-2009, 08:13 Ryan Giggs. Pains me to say it as a Leeds fan and United hater, but he is a magnificent player, and continues to be (MU's best player this season by a massive margin), and defines what it is to be a professional. Hard working, well tempered, respectful of the officials, the opposition and never lets his ego get the better of him. The perfect role model footballer.
