View Full Version : Help connecting a mini network please!

We have got a mini network set up at work that allows us share files and printers. There are three computers on the network which are all connected via a router using UTP Patch Cable.

There is a broadband adsl connection through one of the computers (this one that I'm using actually!)

All the file and printer sharing works fine.

However, I can only connect to the internet on the one computer where the modem is connected.

I have used the connection wizard to try and sort out and looked at all the setting on the connection etc but really on this bit I aint got a clue!!

Any assistance gratefully received!

What router is it?

The ADSL connection should be connected to the router and will be shared to all PC's whenever they want to use it.

Thanks for the reply.

The ADSL modem has to be connected via a USB port.

The router is a Sitecom DC202.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, maybe I didn't explain that too well, you need a new modem.

Can't find any info on the router as the Sitecom site is crap so I can't advise as to whether it has got a modem in it or not but I would imagine if it hasn't got one built in then you would need an ethernet modem.

I am told that we should be able to use the single connection as at the moment without having to go through the expense of having ethernet broadband installed.

I'm not sure if its to do with the settings on the LAN in internet options.

Anyone help pretty please!

you could do it through the existing modem by using internet connection sharing on the pc that has the modem connected.
If you're running win 2k or xp then you have the capability and should be able to do it with the network wizard.
If not then it's still possible but more complicated.

To be honest, it would make more sense to shell out the £50 required and do it properly through the router.

Thanks Cyclone.

I've ran the wizard on the two computers concerned and whilst it is picking up the file and printer sharing ok, it is not picking up the internet connection at all.

it's a while since I used ICS, and I did it with 2 network cards instead of 1 and a usb modem.
But, the computer with the network connection needs to be able to allocate addresses to the other pc's on the network I think. So you'll have to disable the dhcp server on your router and make the router basically work as a hub.

You don't need the router if you're using ICS, you'd be better off selling that and putting the money towards a Netgear DG834 as this will do all you want it to, (firewall, modem and router in one type thing).

If you do want to do it the way you're doing it then you don't need the router, you could just use a cheapo switch for a fiver. Windows ICS is pretty **** poor tbh, I've always used the AnalogX Proxy (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm) instead with no problems.

Rather than using ICS (coz it's kinda really rubbish), go to Internet options, then 'connections' tab, and then clic the 'setup' button top right.
that'll basically tell your PC to NOT try and dial a connection itself but to look for one through the network card, should take 10 seconds tops, or in the case of an XP machine, it's done automatically.

If I were you though, I'd follow the advice given above, put that modem of yours in the bin, and get an ADSL ROUTER (that's what your internet connection is right ?), you'll have the modem and the router all in one small box. That means you can UNINSTALL all the crap your ISP gave you on CD, and let your computer find the connection itself.
That will also free you of a USB port too.

that won't work though as the pc connected to the net isn't sharing the connection, it won't pass through packets for any other pc, it will just drop them.

Alternatively, if you want to keep another PC on 24/7, there's the sufficient setting to enable in 'Internet Options' as well 'Other PCs connect through this one to connect to the Internet'

10 seconds I tell ya... I'd know...

Tinternet<->Router/Modem<->All the PCs

errr... no, the modem is currently connected through a pc using the usb port. You should probably read the thread before posting.
If he goes and buys an adsl router, then yes, you don't need to use ICS, but at the moment he does (or an alternative product).

And the setting "Other pc's.... etc" enables ICS, that's what it's doing, Internet Connection Sharing...
