Following on from other threads about Rainrescue's Rosco, we're putting together a diary of his recovery.

Hopefully this will help to raise funds for his treatment (donations to Rain Rescue!) and highlight what good animal charities do for animals in need.

Another thread on Rosco is here:

http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=507325

Rosco is an 18 month, deaf, greyhound cross.

His full history isn’t known, but what we do know was that he was kept for chasing rabbits, but we he was not interested in chasing. Because of this, we believe his owner had beaten him.

This terrible start to life got worse, when he was hit by a car and broke his back leg. His leg broke just below the hip joint; the ball of the ball-and-socket hip joint was detached. He was treated for his break, but when he came to Rain Rescue, was still not moving his leg, or putting any weight on it.

After a week in kennels, he came to his foster home, where he lives with two cats. He has shown no interest in the cats beyond curiousity and the same can be said for the Guinea Pigs. After a couple of nights, he was quiet in his crate at night and needs waking up every morning.

He can move around quite well on his three good legs, but he has so much energy, he wants to play with other dogs in the park. He likes nothing more than lying down and going to sleep, his favourite places are on the sofa and on his duvet on the floor.

So far while he’s been with us, Rosco hasn’t been able to walk far, but he has been in the van down to Hillsborough Park where he can have a wander and a sniff and watch the world go by.

11th September 2009

Rosco went to Broomhill Vets this evening to have his first vaccinations, be microchipped and so the vet could have a look at his leg. He squeeled like a baby when the microchip went in, these dogs are such wimps!

Bad news on his leg, the vet has referred him to Peak Vets, the fact he isn’t walking on in indicates he will probably need X-Rays. Amputating the leg was also mentioned.

13th September 2009

He had his first visit to The Harlequin pub today; he enjoyed sprawling on the floor and getting attention from everyone there. He also met a Cavilier King Charles Spaniel, he is very well behaved around other dogs. He loves a sniff and to say hello, but he is quite calm and certainly not aggressive.

14th September 2009

Today Rosco went to his appointment at Peak Vets in Woodseats, Sheffield. Luckily the vet had managed to get hold of his notes, so he could see exactly what treatment Rosco had already had. He seems to think either he isn’t moving the leg because it hurts, or, that there might be a small piece of bone which is making it very sore to move for him. He’s got to go back in next week for X-Rays as that’s the only way to tell what is wrong. He’s a different dog from the one who came to us a week ago, full of character and he’s got his paws well and truly under the table!

23rd September 2009

Rosco’s second trip to Peak Vets today. It always makes me nervous taking an animal to the vet and today is no exception! I dropped him off at 9.30 for his X-Rays and any surgery he needs. The vet is also neutering him while he is under anaesthetic.

Just got a call from Greg the vet. He was X-Rayed and he did have a piece of bone which was giving him pain when he moved his leg. This has been removed, he’s been neutered and apparently he’s just waking up at 4pm. Hopefully, he will be awake enough to come home later on this evening. That should be the medical reason for not moving his leg sorted, now it’s getting him to use it again! If he’s well enough, he’s visiting my Mum and Dad on Saturday in the Lake District! Hopefully we’ll get some good photos of him there!

Oooh am I allowed to write in this diary too? He's espcially looking forward to the weekend in Lakes (or at least, I am!) Today has been weird in the house without him and his favourite hobby-slowly but surely claiming every inch of the couch until you're so squashed you can't breathe :D

pictures pictures pictures - come on all you budding photographers

We need some good ones of this sleeping angel to get onto our new blog when our site is up and running.
Rosco should be our fundraising dog - to pay for his operation.

Could I add another big thanks to GREGG AT PEAK VETS for really putting himself out and helping Rosco (even though he's a bit poorly himself atm). He's done a big operation on the boy today - and hopefully now Rosco will be out of pain and on the road to recovery.

Will you be able to take up the hydrotherapy offer now Haddock? I forgot to ask Gregg.

I hope we can take up the offer! He's on rest until he goes back to see Greg in a couple of weeks, but after that, hopefully it'll just be putting muscle back on that we're

Greg at Peak is a brilliant vet, I liked him when we saw him with our cats when we started using Peak and he's been so good with Rosco now too.

Rosco has spent ALL EVENING, telling us what an awful day he has had! He is sore today after his operation, especially as he was castrated too!!

He seems much brighter this morning! He really wasn't himself last night at all, but this morning he is much brighter. He wagged his tail before too! He was very sore after his operation and castration, you could tell it hurt him to lie down or get up, but he seems to be moving much better this morning too.

It's going to be so good to see WHEN he starts using his leg again!

Hope he's feeling ok tonight Andy- let me know how u go.

I think actually it was A LARGE piece of bone left in the poor boys leg. Its awful and very upsetting to think that this boy has been in pain for almost a month now (not under our care I hasten to add)

The bill is just over £450 and thats with a huge discount given by the vets for us. So, we best get his pityful appeal rolling and see if he can earn his keep bless him.

give him a cuddle on the sofa from me (no doubt he's managed to get up on it)

Quoted from another thread.

See above post, he seems far better today after a good sleep and some rest.

To say he was in pain, he never showed any sign of being irritated, aggressive or snappy. Hopefully in a few days he will be free of any pain in his leg and he might start using it.

Yes, even though he was feeling so bad, he still managed to haul himself up onto the sofa!

And occupy most of it, I'll bet!! Now it's getting colder, I'm letting Zeb up for a cuddle - he's lovely and warm. He starts off quite neat, then starts squiggling about a bit and all the legs emerge!!! I end up occupying a few square inches of sofa, while him, Mina and George sprawl in comfort.

Pleased to hear that Rosco is feeling a bit brighter today...lots of snuggles, tasty treats and cosy duvets for that (not so) brave boy, he's earned it .
My fingers are well and truly crossed that this latest op will help him to use his leg again, keep up with the diary I do like to read about his progress.
If only I had my lottery win, I would be in the queue to give him a home because he sounds like a fabulous dog, have there been any enquiries for him yet?

Agggh - just read earlier that you are also happy to do us a photoshoot for ROSCO -
that would be MARVELOUS if you would and I'm sure that Haddock would manage to sort out also.
Rosco is just SO adoreable - and melts everyone's heart -
This dog should be able to earn some good donations for the Rescue to be able to cover not only his own vet bill - but give us a little bit in store also for others like him.

Thank you for your donation - and we are happy to have a link to your site on our new website also

With Rosco we'll just fit in with whatever suits - we're both students as well so don't have "real" work to do!! :-)

For the raffle prize we have a portable studio so can do a family portrait in a location of the winners choice - we will then meet the family/person and they can pick their favourite picture to have printed. If they like more than one they'll be available through our website - basically its our standard portrait package on our website!

I can either be contacted through here or through our website above - there's email and phone or whatever on their so whatever suits you. If you need a voucher or whatever for the raffle prize let me know and I'll email one over.

Glad we are able to do something to help!

To be honest, apart from his not walking on his leg, you wouldn't think there was anything up with him!

Like I've said, he's a different dog completely from the one we took from the kennels!

Fine. I think he was quite intimidated by April staring at him as he kept yawning with a bit of a cry.

At one point april was on my knee at one side and Rosco at the other. He didnt flinch when she grabbed him (she deliberately stood in front of his food bowl when he wanted something to eat ).

She's a funny thing, but she's mummy's little darling and probably gets away with far more then she should/then any of the other animals do. I don't have favourites, but April (along with Ginger) lived with me when I lived alone and so I have quite a bond with her. She's fabulous IMO, but a total monkey in most other people's :P

He kind of lost his balance after crashing into the fridge  but he caught himself on his leg, then when he realised it was ok, he was at least touching the floor with it on each step.

He seems to have forgotten about that this morning a bit, but we'll soon remind him!

Rosco went to the vet again last night and has no excuses now for not using his leg!

Been told to excercise him, if we can get him hydrotherapy, that'd be good and we've got some excercises and physio to do with him as often as he will let us!

He's coming back to the Lakes next weekend with us, so hopefully my mum will take him a big walk and fall a little bit in love?

I will need this Break in the Lakes-whatever the Lakes are, :? by the time the other animals have finished torturing me! You see, I don't like to admit it, but I'm a bit of a wimp!

I've heard mummy talking about being pulled somewhere by her though-I hope she doesn't make a habit of this as I only have three legs in working order at the moment, and falling flat on my face on this double date would be super embarassing! What's a holiday? Uh-oh, it's Roscoe here, I am in BIG trouble. You know how I chewed through Daddy's mum and dad's seatbelt? Apparantly it is costing not much off £200 to put right. Might have to postpone that date Bosh, I have been told to consider myself well and truly grounded!

I'm still going to the Lakes though-I thought I may have beeb left behind but I heard them talking about how much they love me and of course they wouldn't leave me behind ;) I also haerd them talking about there being many many rabbits round where daddy's parents live-shame I'm not allowed off lead-I'd have them-but I daren't push my luck after how naughty I've been!

Pea does sound a cracker doesn't she? But Pip is very pretty too-I think she might be a bit small for me though, I mean, I stood on her head twice within minutes of meeting her. She is gorgeous though  The height difference might become a problem though if ever we decided to become....intimate :o

Pea here....Rosco you sound very manly such a strong boy opening the crate and chewing through the straps that the naughty humans tried to restrain you with I love a rebel :love:

Our Kira's like that she killed Mum's settee, gosh we were ever so proud of the hole in it and the fluff from inside made really good rabbits to kill (we are not allowed to kill Mum's rabbits you see) then mardy Mum came home and started to clean it all up, she was using that horrible high pitched, loud whiney voice and going on about us being naughty and going back to the pound...girls like us are worth a lot more than just a pound we are priceless! :D

Anyway I overheard Mum talking to Daddy Dave about you being naughty, she was saying that she wondered if you were getting separated angliaties or something...not sure what that is but it sounds painful so I do hope not dear Rosco...she also said that perhaps you just got your foot in the door and trying it on, Mum talks some rubbish at times no way a door would fit a lurcher.

Kira is very excited about the date, she fancies Bosh :hihi: she saw his picture and went racing around the garden...she has little dignity at times, we just can't wait to be out with 2 big strong boys like yourselves :love:

I am proud of everything I have done-I stole a packet of Stollen, mum and dad's favourite cake, and I know why it is now! it was delicious, and also I slobbered all over her orange chocolates last night-I only managed to sneak one before they were snatched away but by god I made sure I ruined the whole packet with drool-if I'm not allowed then then I'm sure I'm not going to watch mum and dad scoff them to theirselves, greedy guts that they are! I tried to lick some mulled wine out of a mug but I got very very very told off for that-apparantly alcohol is no good for dogs-but Bosh I'm sure we can steal some from our houses to impress the laides on our date ;) Pea likes a manly bad bay, she said it herself.

Sounds like great fun with the sofa Pea-and Kira sounds like a fun little lady-but it's you I've fallen for, you sound HOT  My mum talks rubbish all the time like blah blah Roscoe don't break into the guinea pig cage, blah blah Roscoe don't tip over the kettle, blah blah Roscoe don't jump onto the kitchen table, knock everything off and stand there looking so goddamn pleased with yourself. I think she has the same voice as your mum too-she was well annoyed last night with everything! Everyone was getting done for no reason...well almost no reason...well ok we were all very naughty last night but still that's no reason for her to get emotional and cry that's she had such a busy week and would we please all BEHAVE. We were only having a bti of fun! :loopy:

Ros,I told you to blame the CATS just put on that soppy face you have and they wll think it was the cats not you cause you look innocent!!
I am in the dog house with my mum and my auntie magsie cause my mum had to go the this man called the dentist cause she had a abscess or something so it was really bothering her last night so she has this thing called a plate with teeth on and when she was in the shower this morning i just thought i would look at them honest wasnt going to do anything else with them then she came out of the shower and starts yelling with that funny voice again and then when she comes into the living room and sees me with this plate thing in my mouth she starts going nuts and i thought she was playing, so i start playing hide and seek with these teeth things in my mouth but i could tell she wasnt happy so i gave them back to her and she phones aunty magsie up(you know the one that always brings treats) and then she starts laughing on the phone I cant make her out sometimes.
But I think the date with the girls will have to wait for a bit, mind you they do sound really hot girls dont they cant wait to meet up.And dont worry I can always sneek some beer out, anyway Ros hope you have a lovely holiday with your mum and dad and see lots of rabbits roll in some fox poo for me I will give you a bell on the dog and bone when you get back cheers mate

He looks marvelous Haddock - and he is going to be featured in a magazine this next month called REFLECT.

I hope we manage to get some donations in towards his huge vet bills, but more importantly - to give him a much needed home for life.

thanks for putting them up for him

My god, how much we'd love to keep him. Seeing his face when he was in the Lakes at the weekend was so nice, he seemed to really love being in the countryside.

Unfortunately, I just don't think we're able to commit to a permanent dog at the moment :(

I spoke to his 'potential' new mum last night Haddock and he was fast asleep smiling. He had been out for a walk with his new friends - and nobody had an issue at all. In fact they sent me a link to some pics of him in his new chair. They seem a brilliant home for him and we can keep our fingers and toes crossed nothing changes over the weekend, and if so - odds are this will be his home for life. Boy is it a great one.

Great big thank you's to Haddock and Mermaid for all the love and care they have given to him and
Great big thank yous' to Moonbird for posting him on the Lurcher Link forum where his new home found him.

I do have to say though that Pea is gutted having her potential new boyfriend snatched away at a seconds notice...but she does wish him well :hihi:

They seemed really nice when I spoke to them and also when they came to visit last night.

They go on the Lurcher Link forum, which I look on quite regularly, so we can keep up to date with how he's doing.

I can't see them not wanting to keep him now, so looks like that's him rehomed!

He really was a different dog when he left that when he came to us, shows what a bit of attention and a warm place to live can do :)

If we could have committed to having a dog of our own, believe me, we would have kept him in an instant!

Honestly, if he could have stayed, he would have!

I know, we'd have had Slim if we'd not already been full, he looks lovely!

Hope it's OK, but this is a link to a couple of photos of him in his new home, taken last night.

Wow, I'm really sad! Almost as sad as when Zac the collie went around New Year! Anyone who fosters will know what I mean though-ecstatic he has somewhere lovely to live, with two amazing new owners (they were really, really nice!) whilst at the same time missing him dreadfully! His new mummies promise to keep in touch though, and they go on the Lurcher Link walks in Chesterfield, so no doubt we will still see him occasionally. Moonbird-if it was just me or haddock we would be rubbish fosterers, but we keep each other in check. :D I really want to keep Pumpkin but it's not going to happen. We are a good influence on each other :hihi:

Thank you Moon :) I'm ok really-those pictures on the Lurcher forum are impossible not to smile at! Nipping upto the kennels to pick up a collie that needs transporting on Saturday and will get to meet our potential next foster-I think you know about her :D I''ve seen a pic of the collie though, and now am broody for a collie dog  I'm so fickle :hihi:

Ock, you know I love Pumpkin but I know know know we can't keep her, I'm not stupid, but she IS lovely!

And thanks everyone, like Andy says though, he was no trouble, not really! And seadog, thanks for the offer of having him tomorrow night, even though it's not needed any more :)

A few new photos of him in his new home again, he looks to have settled in just fine!

It's a really wonderful home he has gone to....and.....he seems to have found himself a girlfriend (see photos).

We're hoping to meet up at some point in the future and see him.

Thanks to Rain Rescue, this wonderful boy's life has been turned around completely.
