Any of you good people help me out over nightlife, pubs and all that in dronfield. Moving there in a couple of weeks because I've been transferred in the company to Chesterfield from Liverpool. I'm not too happy about it but it's promotion.
Everyone says that Chesterfield is a dump to go out at night (don't know if that's true-sorry to anybody from Chesterfield) looking for decent pubs, good pint, no trouble and live music would be good too.
Any ideas and advice dead welcome thanks

Not really sure what you're looking for but check this link

http://www.jcbmcs.demon.co.uk/

This is the next village (Dronfield and Coal Aston have gradually merged over the years). The live music events at CAVH tend to be folk orientated but occassionally offer surprises with well known (at least in folk circles) names. Last gig we had Ashley Hutchins founder member of Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention. Let me know what genre of music you're into and I'll tell you what I know.

Thanks for the reply commuter. No I'm not a folk person more rock, R n B type of music but if nothing else I can give it a try. If you've any ideas where you get some decent live R n R around please let me know, ta for that:thumbsup:

Dronfield has a few decent pubs (coach and horses:thumbsup: ).

Chessie is a good laugh. If you fancy an cheesy night out lots of cheap bars and a few bad clubs.

I used to go all the time when I was at school. Now most of the pubs appear to have changed. However , some nice ones have sprung up (Barking Badger, coctail bar (forgoten its name and a few more. It's got a better variety of bars than Sheffield but not as good.

If you like a nice pub then the Royal Oak on Chesterfield Rd (10 mins from town) is good and the Golden Fleece and Rutland in town are good.

also you get a lot of live gigs around town.

Big thanks for all that Robbie. Funny when you read that guide to Chesterfield it doesn't sound that bad at all! One of the lads from the company worked over there a couple of years ago and it was he said it wasn't that good, he preffered Sheffield said there was loads more going on.
All in all didn't wan't to move but you've gotta make the most of it!
Thanks again:clap:

Dronfield's got some really good pubs and restaurants but it's not so good if you want a big night out. There's plenty of quiz nights on in the pubs if you're into that!!! The Green Dragon is particularly good and a lot of people in their 20s and 30s go there.
If you want to go to club's, etc it's better to go into Sheffield and strangely a taxi from Sheffield to Dronfield is cheaper than a taxi from Chesterfield to Dronfield!!!

If you like rock music there is corporation in sheffield. I think its a good night on a saturday but there are people who will argue with me on that!! check out www.corporation.org.uk

Taxi from sheffield to chesterfield is £13.50. Might be cheaper to dronfield. to justify this its £1 to get into corp before 10 and £5 after and bottles of carling are £1.50 and they do deals on spirits. It closes at 2.30am.

i enjoy my saturday nights!!

 Thanks for all that Snakey, I've printed your good pub guide off for when I move there. First few weeks I'll be in digs there while I sort something more permanent out.Been looking on the net and the house prices look a bit stiff there so in the end I might not be able to stay but seems okay for pubs etc with what you've written and then Sheffield's not that far either.
I'll bear in mind your advice about Chesterfield! Thanks

That ok no problems.PM me and ill be happy to give you directions from where ever your digs are to the pubs.
I know what you mean about house prices they are a tad high , im looking for my 1st house and theres no way i can afford dronfield prices so if when you come up also have a look at woodseats ,heeley, gleedless ,highfield, lowfield and abbeydale areas of sheffield.there in the south of sheffield all nice areas cheaper than dronfield but also very close.

The Blue Stoops used to be a great boozer when it served Wards Ale.

It had three rooms.

To the right of the main entrance on High Street was a sort of general, mixed room, with an ancient fireplace with a date on it. That was the bar.

In the other side (to the left) was a sort of snobs bar, for people who wore ties and thought they were posh. Beer used to cost more in there.

And then there was the back room. The one we used as kids.

You had to go to a sort of doorway to get served. It was not hush-hush, but it was quite discreet.

I remember celebrating my (then) girlfiend's 17th birthday there. I was still 16. We supped like good ens and nobody batted an eyelid.

I remember the price of a pint of best bitter going from 23p to 26p and the locals were outraged!

At lunchtime they used to serve a wonderful meat pie. Home made etc, great pastry.

hiya Daverity, it's a while since i've been out in Dronfield but there's some lovely places and a pretty good choice. You really have to try a few places out for yourself and see what you like.

Yeah, some of the houseprices can be a bit steep, but i'm sure you'll find somewhere to suit. Coal Aston is not far from Dronfield and then there's always the top end of Sheffield (Jordanthorpe) which is a lot cheaper - but it all depends what you're looking for.

You're bound to find somewhere in Sheffield for a decent drink, and you can always join us lot for a forum night out - Sundays and Wednesdays (and lots of other days coming up)!

There's a couple of people on the forum from your neck of the woods too, so you'll soon find yourself at home.

Dronfield is abit dull to be honest. I live here and its got gradually worse! they turned the only nightclub into a fishing tackle shop which says it all!

The green dragon is a nice pub, so is the blue stoops. I'm not sure about live music, most pubs have quiz nights and i think some have karaoke on the odd occasion.

as for chesterfield, its a typical midlands town... Its abit in-bred and to be honest its a dump. the town centre bars are pretty good if your underage but not alot more. i'm sure there are pubs that are good fun, but i certainly have'nt been to any!

dronfield is good if you like quiet pubs to get to know the locals but otherwise your best sticking to sheffield

A VERY BIG THANKYOU

I'm not sure if this thread will close soon but can I personally thank all contributors for their help and suggestions before it does.

Never easy moving to a new place but it's made a lot easier when you can leave a post and within a couple of days have chapter and verse on where and where not to go for your entertainment. Look forward to perhaps meeting some of you and I promise I won't nick any of your hubcaps when I come...........Scouser's honour!:hihi:

Hello all,
Here follows what I know about live music in Dronfield. Thursday nights you can usually find Russ Dennett and John the fox playing at the Hallowes or atTthe Swan. Sometimes with a full band, sometimes just acoustic guitars. They have guest singers get up to strut there stuff quite regularly and if you play yourself they don't mind you having a jam. It's a lways a fun night. Check it out.

You could just move to Sheffield you know, Chesterfield doesn't take that long to get to from the south side of the city, I live in Beauchief and it takes around 20mins in the car from here. That way you can have the best if both worlds- be close to work and live in a city thats quite good for gigs and music. The house prices around Woodseats and the top end of Greenhill are cheaper then a lot of Dronfield, and if you want to rent for a while I don't think theres a lot of difference between prices in Sheffield and Dronfield!

Oh dear Daverity... When I read the title of this thread I had to laugh... Dronfield is a dire little town. Comparing the nightlife of Dronny to the nightlife of Liverpool is like comparing a sunday league team to Liverpool FC, so I think you're in for a bit of a culture shock.

And Chesterfield is seriously manky. :gag:

Have you thought about living in Sheffield? My friend works in Chesterfield and commutes from her Sheffield home every day, and she says it's much more preferable to actually living in Chessie, Coal Aston, Dronny or similar.

If you enjoy socialising and nights out then I think you'd be much happier doing that, and the house prices are cheaper too.

Good luck with the move, I'm sure you'll find some nice new friends wherever you end up. South Yorkshire is a very friendly place, and the people of North Derbyshire are a good bunch too.:D

I dont think anybody on here has bragged about dronfields nightlife , yeah its nothing great its just your normal small town nightlife just pubs ect but i think your wrong to say its a dire little town , what do you base that on ???? It certainy aint rough , it certainly aint run down and it certainly aint full of townie scrubbers.

I catch the bus into sheffield to meet and greet people and a taxi back , theres nothing wrong with that.
Weve mentioned having a look at the south of the city but at the end of the day you'd still have to catch buses and taxis to go places

Sorry to offend Snakey... But you obviously enjoy living in Dronfield so who care's what I think eh? ;)

I grew up in Dronny so that what I've based my comments on. It was a lovely place to spend my formative years, but far too dull to waste any adult time on. I meant dire in terms of entertainment only though - as I said, the people of N Derbyshire are generally a nice bunch.

Okay Snakey. You're right. Maybe calling it 'dire' was a bit extreme, I had a lot of fun as a child in Dronny. It's just not much of a place to go out in.

I also find that when I go back to visit family, a lot of people seem to have quite a "small town" mentality. Most of the people I went to primary school with are still hanging around, doing the same old stuff, going to the same old places, and not really experiencing all they could experience in life.

There's a big wide world out there!

Do you find this to be true of the Dronny peeps you know, or not?

I agree with these comments by JBee. I was brought up in a village called Youlgrave near Bakewell and lived there until i was 28, but spent no time there since 25 when i met the ex.

Since i split up with the ex i have tried to spend time with my old mates but its the same small town/village mentality. None of them want to do anything and thats not because they have all settled down!!!

I work every other Saturday so if none of my old mates are out in Bakewell (which is just as bad, but there are more people) i go out with my dad and his mate. Not the ideal situation for a single lad on a friday night but it beats doing nothing with your old mates who i have sadly grown apart from.

By the way saturday i go to corp (no insults please!!) :headbang:

I am glad to hear the thick sweaty oaf brothers that ran the Stoops are gone, who wants to look at that when waiting for your pint?

I heard that the landlord of the Dragon was aggresively rude but have also heard he has left.

The Ash Tree is Dronfields equivalent of Mos Eisley Spaceport.

In terms of aesthetics The Stoops and Dragon are the best, the best all round is The Swan and I remember seeing a pool table in there last time I went.

Chesterfield? Ok if Saturday nights alright for fighting.

Dronfield is a nice area, and although it is technically a town it just really feels like a big suburb, and when we talk of nightlife should probably be treated as such.

The Blue Stoops and the Old Sidings in Dronfield aren't too bad, and out in Dronfield Woodhouse the Jolly Farmer is a good pub for real ale..

However if you want anything more you really need to get on a bus into Sheffield or Chesterfield (or possibly Woodseats).

Both Stagecoach and TM Travel run buses out of Dronfield, timetables can be found at www.derbysbus.net.
