We have a Jack Russell bitch puppy.

How long are we looking at to get her house trained roughly? I've seen some real twaddle on some websites saying 5 days :o It's not the fact that she's making a mess - carpet etc can be cleaned but I'd hate to think we were making a bad job of training her.

We're taking her out at regular intervals and after she wakes up or has been playing, the accidents have been either overnight (Which we expected) after eating or playing when we've left it too long to take her out.

It totally depends on the dog - some take days, others weeks, some months.

I doubt you're doing it wrong :) As long as you follow the following rules you're likely to be ok:

Take out every hour, or after food/water, playing or sleeping
Ignore accidents - don't reassure and certainly don't punish
Take puppy out for roughly 3 minutes at a time and if she doesn't go, bring her back in until she shows any signs of needing to go, then back out.
Reward lavishly (but not enough to freak her out - quiet puppies don't appreciate a celebration!) when puppy toilets outside
Go out to the garden with puppy - don't stand at the door and send her out, rewarding her on her return

A crate can really help with toilet training but as some have proven its not essential. (I only used Takara's crate at night - not for full on toilet training and she was trained within a couple of weeks)

I hope that helps to put your mind at ease :)

I'm sure you're doing a great job with her but don't compare her progress to that of other dogs - they're all different.

Thanks

Thats roughly what we're doing now, maybe not every hour though so will look at doing that.

We've never punished the accidents, just ignored them and cleaned up out of her sight

We are training out cavalier pup at the moment (around 3 weeks). The key for us is to take him out every hour, especially after every nap. Now he is getting the idea! Luckilly for us we have wooden flooring throughout our downstairs. We have found that he does tend to wee on our rugs which we have just put back down. Now he runs to the door when he needs to go, paws it and runs around in circles. The problem for us that he barks at everything but not to go out!!!!! If we dont see him at the door then he just does it there! Hopefully he will learn to bark when we are not in the same room as him!!! No accidents this week so far!!!!
