I have a female rabbit who is 16 weeks old roughly. She is a house rabbit and I was wondering what the benefits would be if I had her spayed?

My vet told me that a very high percentage of female rabbits develop various cancers related to the reproductive system. Ovarian cancer being one of them. I cannot remember the percentage now but it was very high. In the wild rabbits would breed more or less constantly and their reproductive systems are designed for this. As pets we generally don't allow this to happen, thus cancer developing.

The best thing you can do for a female rabbit is to have her spayed. I have just acquired a female rescue rabbit myself and as soon as I feel she is settled well at home she'll be booked in for the op.

How old do they have to be? Iv read that they make better pets once neutered. Poppy my girl is marking EVERYTHING in sight now with her chin lol

I can't remember how old Truffle was when I had her done. Your vet will tell you if you give them a ring. I'm not sure how old Tigerlily is with her being a rescue, another reason why I'm waiting another couple of months before getting her spayed.

I'm pretty sure it was around 5-6 months when I worked at Broomhill (I could be wrong) but also depended on the rabbit's size. If the rabbit was quite immature and there were no males to worry about the vet would suggest waiting until she thought it'd be an easier op resulting in less trauma.

I could be wrong about the age though - it's been a while and my brain is full of other rubbish since then!

I was told Tigerlily was between 18 months and 2 years old when I took her in.:)

A male rabbit buck can be neutered from 3/4 months and a female doe from 5/6 months.
