to be honest if you got your hamster from a pet shop hes unlikely to be pure winter whites ...hybrids can be riddled with problems
http://www.britishhamsterassociation.org.uk/locate_breeder.php
this may be of some help if you want to locate pure winter whites but please dont breed dwarves without knowing for sure that they arent hybrids

By the way! do you know what it means by pied winter whites? it said that at the pet shop i got my hamster from. I don't think my hamster is a hybrid aswell because i went to the shop and it made a pet room and it had the hamsters they use to breed in it.There was a plea winter white couple and a cream winter white couple. i think mine is the cream one.

Peter... do you have your parent's help with this?? I would be very concerned about a 14 year old breeding hamsters considering the fact that responsible pet shops and breeders only sell animals to over 16s!

But we have bred guinea pigs before easily enough. and now i have a hamster so i'm looking for a mate for it.

Well thank God not everyone thinks the way you do...

Otherwise we'd be totally overrun with animals bred purely because someone 'got one so decided to breed from it'

(Oh wait... we are)

Sorry Peter, I'm all for owning and caring for animals and I have no problem with breeders at all (much rather get a pet from a breeder than from a pet shop) but you are still unsure of what hamsters are actually Winter Whites. You should be learning so much more before even contemplating breeding.

Just because you've bred other animals 'easily enough' doesn't mean it's always going to be easy - problems happen, babies suffer and if you don't know everything you need to know, they can die.

I still fail to understand why people can't just own an animal and be happy with it instead of having to breed them.

In order to breed you should research and learn for (at least) many months beforehand, you should know everything you can know about that particular animal and know exactly what to do in the case of any problems. You certainly shouldn't still be asking people if their hamster is a winter white because you are not confident of knowing for yourself.

i agree with lotti....it takes months to proper understand the genes...you need to know what you are breeding for , how to introduce the hamsters and that the male will remate the female an hour or two after giving birth and its quite easy to end up with loads

If it makes you happier. i am not breeding hamsters yet ! only when i am ready and so far i am not ready and if you can see that i am actually getting organised before i can breed. And i might not even breed hamsters since apparently we are "totally overrun with animals". and btw i have been researching this for a good 3 months now!!!!!

Peter63, I don't think that anyone meant that you are over run with animals but more that the country is over run with animals.
I am sure that no one is trying to be mean or upset you, but just trying to make you think about things a little we see many many hamsters on here looking for new homes after people tire of them...I know this won't happen to yours but how about the little babies that they make, it is a big responsibility to bring other living things into the world :)

research is good ...if you seriously want to breed you want hamsters of good type, that your sure are pure winter whites... you dont have to show to breed but think of your aims...i bred for tortoiseshells and good temperement and i keep in touch with the owners , any questions they have etc
breeding is hard work even for hamsters you need to spend time handling, money on good quality food and money for vets bills incase your female gets a pup stuck etc. have homes lined up before you breed, and KNOW 100% why you want to breed and why it will better the captive specimens of the breed
if you can look at all these requirements and can fulfill them get in touch with breeders and get good stock :)

indeed moonbird it is a responsibility
even with a list of owners interested in my hamsters people can still change their minds or their circumstances change and you will be responsible for looking after the babies that stay

well its something to think about...if the breeder is near you maybe ask them to mentor you, it may give you some experience etc
