I've been with BT Openworld for a few years now and they've just put my 512k connection up to 2Meg for free :D All existing customers should be expecting the free upgrade.

I vaguely remember a discussion on this a while back where someone said it came with a monthly download cap, but I can't remember whether anyone actually found that in the T&Cs. Could be complete rubbish :)

So how much is the BT 2 meg service?

I had my business broadband upgraded from 512k to 2Mb a month or two ago.

It's uncapped, but that's becaue it is the Business Broadband service. I pay about 30 a month for it. A bit steeper than some but I've had no real problems with it and there's no cap.

Sure that's right? If you get a business 2 meg service for £30 a month, you're getting a pretty amazing deal! :)

[edit - pretty close, it's £30 ex vat according to this link (http://www.btbroadbandoffice.com/broadband/btq3/ol8?campaignid=inbusiness). It's not as good a deal as it sounds though, because it's a 50:1 contention package unless you get the more expensive "multi-user" ones. A bit sneaky, as most companies have always given the 20:1 service with all "business" packages - but makes sense, a lot of offices will be fine with that]

From looking at the BT page, the home packages come with either 15 or 30 GB of bandwidth per month - more than enough for most people.

2Mb downstream ADSL.

Sorry, yes - 30 excluding VAT.

Have to say I've not really thought about the capping - I've never been anywhere near it and was under the impression that it wasn't capped.

I also have a fixed IP address in with that - I think the ill comes in at aout GBP146 a quarter, all in.

They also chucked in a modem.

I also added in the word "home" when I edited it, yours indeed won't be capped as a business one :)

No it's not capped. Capping was never part of the original BT ADSL package and so they cannot now suddendly impose a capped upgrade on customers subscribed to the original package.

I'm sure the T&Cs let them do whatever they want :) New connections are certainly subject to a cap, according to this page (http://www.bt.com/broadband/bb_info.jsp), so it wouldn't surprise me if converted ones are too... Or if all other ISPs go the same way, but that's another discussion!

Sorry JB, but btinternet will be capping most packages....the 1meg package has been capped for some time, but the date for capping the 2meg packages that will be capped has been delayed, it seems.

All the information you need is on the bt.com website, but you have to really look around to find everything.

I had a letter about a year ago about changes to BT's T&Cs which accommodate capping.

i have business package & they can't cap an exist account if that wasn't part of your original contract. i have a 12:1 contention ration howevr due to wher i live i can't receive any higher than 512 anyway.

Isn't the usual way this works that they will have some clause in the contract mentioning "reasonable use", which they will now suddenly define as below whatever cap they want? Failing that, they can just say that if you download over 15 or 30 gigs a month, you are abusing the network, which I'm sure will be in there.

I guess if they wanted to, they could just cancel your contract and offer you a new one on the new tariff...

That reminds me though, whatever happened with NTL? For those who don't remember, they said they were going to impose a 1GB per day limit (if memory serves me right). There was uproar from people claiming their rights had been infringed, although 90+ % of them just wanted to be able to download more warez :) I'm not sure how much if any they actually enforced this though?

As mentioned above they can and did place cap limits onto users. I was told 17 months ago that they would be capping my connection (and I signed up for an uncapped service), so I left them.

Firstly what does capping mean?

I have BT Broadband and pay £30 a month and they have just recently updated it to 2.2 MBPS

It relates to the amount you are allowed to download, and in BT's case is either 1, 15 or 30 gigabytes. The 1 GB tariff is aimed at very light users and is quite cheap. The others are likely to be the more common ones, but it's a little hard to guess how much you use unless you monitor it. As comparison, I've got through 1.3 GB through my web browser so far in July and I'd say I use the web more than most. I've also received just over 400 MB via email. I do have various other data traffic, but a lot of people wouldn't so 15 GB would be plenty for most people I reckon. However, I don't use things like video streaming or internet radio much at all, so these would add a lot...

What happens if you exceed the cap I'm not sure. It might automatically throttle you down to a low speed, they might charge you per amount of data used, or they might just politely ask you not to do it again :)

I have not received my upgrade either, still on 1mb

Saying my line is "too long"

Also have nightmares staying connected on broadband as well, always cutting out,

ftp uploading of web pages is a night mare, as ftp never seems to work, , and then webiste doesnt load as saying "used my bandwith" but no one can tell me what my bandwith is.

the bt help icon is a complete waste of time, they know bugger all about anything related to the internet or problems.

Cannot wait for the 12 months up to move isp`s, BT yahoo is pile of crap here.

Well thats my moan out of the way

Well thats my moan out of the way  Peter, do you have the BT Broadband Basic package, at something like £17.99 per month, which is capped at only 1GB per month?

I have the BT Broadband package, and the first 24+ hours after upgrade to 2meg was murder....wouldn't stay connected, and download speeds seemed to be slower than dial-up was back in the bad old days. I rang the free helpline, which I'm entitled to with BT Broadband, and they tried to get me to ring a national rate number.....when I pointed out that I was not a BT Broadband Basic customer, and therefore entitled to a free helpline service, I was put through to the relevant department ~ probably just as well, coz the "Indian" (it seems everything has been farmed out to India as well) at the other end of the telephone line was absolutely useless (giving me wrong information, and not explaining things, I needed to do, properly), and he should have known that there was a problem with the service in the first 24+ hours after upgrade....I thought I'd mention that in case anyone else is told to ring the national rate number, when they're entitled to free helpline.

It's ok now.

As far as I know, there's been a delay on capping this package....I don't think BT have worked out how to count yet. I haven't had the e-mail yet to say that it's started, anyway. I have no idea what my monthly usage is.
