A man called at my house while I was out. My Mum let him in after checking his ID badge, etc. In any case my sons, in their twenties and a couple of their mates were in the house.
The man was from the water authority and said he'd come to read the water meter. My mother explained that the house has never had a water meter. The guy was insistent that, under the sink was a meter. The guy insisted on taking out all the disinfectants, cleaning agents etc from under the sink in order to get to the meter.
Basically he patronised my Mum because of her age. When he realised there was no meter he checked his meter reading apparatus and realised he had come to the wrong address.
I work with elderly people every day and would never dream of contradicting someone I didn't know simply because they were not in the first flush of youth...this ageist prat needs educating.

Yup, def something dodgy - water meters are outside. We've lived in two houses that have water meters - both of them are outside.

When I enquired about having a water meter fitted it was stipulated by the water company that it had to be fitted somewhere outside that allowed the meter reader access without me unlocking doors/gates.

Sounds very dodgy to me.

My mum's meter is in the house, but she lives in Cambridge.

I still think it sounds iffy :suspect:

Couldn't one of the young men in the house given this man a well-deserved slap?

water companies like to fit meters under the sink nowadays cos it's cheaper.....they willoffer it outside but charge you minimum of £90.00......still needs looking into what had gone wrong though

i'm not quite sure how this is ageism. Are you sure that he wouldn't have insisted it was under the sink if someone younger had told him it wasn't?

Stupid yes, ageist, no.

I wouldn't say it was ageist. I go to jobs all the time where customers have no idea what boxes\switches\meters etc... they have and they try telling me they haven't got some device somewhere when I know for a fact that they have. I have to insist that they have whether they are in their 20's or 80's or anywhere inbetween.

Mine too is under the sink in the house.
I'm sure they sent us letter before they came out to read it. This is Doncaster though so maybe it is a different company or maybe they had tried too many times when we were out at work. Never left any cards tho.
