View Full Version : An open letter to Massive Attack.
Agent Gypo 22-09-2009, 08:03 Dear Massive Attack,
Last night I endured your utterly soulless drivel for more than an hour at O2 Academy in Sheffield. That was time I could have spent watching Ross Kemp in something slightly less inane on ITV, or perhaps rummaging through bins in search of treacle.
Since you ruined my evening, I feel that a full refund is just and fair. The money will be used to buy knives, and where I live there should be no trouble finding someone who can get all Mr Blonde on my ass. It may seem drastic, but I just can’t take the risk of suffering your music again lest I react like the protagonist in Clockwork Orange when he hears Beethoven’s Ninth.
Yours truly,
Me.
JFKvsNixon 22-09-2009, 08:05 Weren't they very good then?

so why shell out for a ticket?
KATIEB_23 22-09-2009, 09:32 Yeah, why did you go if you don't like Massive Attack?!! :hihi:
Yeah, why did you go if you don't like Massive Attack?!! :hihi:
He thought he was going to see a Massive Ass Act :D
KATIEB_23 22-09-2009, 09:45 He thought he was going to see a Massive Ass Act :DAaaahh. No wonder he's disappointed ;)
NEKRO138 22-09-2009, 11:27 I love Massive Attack but couldn't afford the ticket so I didn't go. I'd assume that he does like Massive Attack if he went to see them!
Kthebean 22-09-2009, 11:30 It has not been a good few weeks for Agent Gypo. He was disappointed by Massive Attack, bored at Warp20 and completely underwhelmed by District 9. Have you considered maybe moving to Manchester, love?
muddycoffee 22-09-2009, 11:38 but on the plus side Ancient Gypo didn't have to go to the Arena with its awful acoustics, where you struggle to hear any lyrics and the beer is £3.50 a pint.
Agent Gypo 22-09-2009, 11:50 I love Massive Attack but couldn't afford the ticket so I didn't go. I'd assume that he does like Massive Attack if he went to see them!
I like bits of their stuff, mainly Blue Lines and Mezzanine, but we found their live performance so utterly dull that we'd all left before the end.

Not yet!
There's good stuff going off here, but I'm usually disappointed by these large events. You pay £20+ and you expect to be entertained.
pennypie 22-09-2009, 12:11 If you didn't like it, you should have just left.
neeeeeeeeeek 22-09-2009, 12:17 If you didn't like it, you should have just left.
He did.

I thought the same when I saw them in Manchester a while back. Technically very good, but they bored me to tears.
aw what I didn't know they came to sheffield! gutted I'd love to have seen them play :(
I went to see them last night. I thought they were brilliant!
alchresearch 22-09-2009, 14:45 I'm not aware of anything significant from them since Unfinished Sympathy.
hutch_uk 23-09-2009, 08:47 who was their supporting act? I enjoyed them a bit more than half the new Massive Attack stuff.
zongamin 23-09-2009, 09:02 I'm not aware of anything significant from them since Unfinished Sympathy.
I take it Protection and Mezzanine passed you by then?
pennypie 23-09-2009, 18:47 He did.
Not for over an hour.
I stayed for less than 5 minutes for Oasis because I thought they were awful - knew that wasn't going to change if I stayed for longer.
I used to dislike them & then really got into the '100th window' LP.
boutiquechoc 24-09-2009, 12:01 I went to this as I am a fan and have been for years.
They certainly wern't souless and it wasn't drivel!!
Perhaps slightly sleepy for some, but you should have known what they were like before going.
Massive Attack are 'different', the masses won't like the style of music they make, and this AO, was probably what happened to you. Their style is more lounge- electronic- 'trip hop' even though they themselves hate that word. If you listen to albums such as Mezzanine and Danny the Dog, you should have an idea of what they will be like when live: they ain't gonna come out jumping up and down.
I saw them last year in Castlefields in MCR, they had a quartet with them for Unfinished Sympathy. Blew my mind!!
How you can generalise songs such as 'unfinished sympathy' and 'teardrops' as drivel (especially as they were sang live) is completely beyond me!!!!! :loopy:

god knows how he didn't enjoy either of those, they were both great....maybe you should stop trying 'different' things AO!
leviathan13 24-09-2009, 12:12 god knows how he didn't enjoy either of those, they were both great....maybe you should stop trying 'different' things AO!
In your humble opinion.
boutiquechoc 24-09-2009, 12:19 In your humble opinion.
What exactly is the purpose of your pointless post Leviathan?...lemme guess.....to wind me up. Ok a prize for big brains coming your way, not......:loopy: d**k!
Kthebean 24-09-2009, 12:20 Well....I enjoyed warp20...but I am part of the great unwashed, in that I dont have a very refined sense of musical production, I just like to have a laugh and a dance with my friends.
I didn't go to see Massive Attack cos even though I own their albums and enjoy listening to them, I did predict the gig wouldn't exactly be...bouncing?
Its just horses for courses though, no need to get cross with each other about it. I've a feeling OP isn't going to like being described as part of 'the masses' :)
leviathan13 24-09-2009, 12:34 What exactly is the purpose of your pointless post Leviathan?...lemme guess.....to wind me up. Ok a prize for big brains coming your way, not......:loopy: d**k!
My point was you were having a go at someone just because they didn't feel the same as you about a band and when they played live. It's your opinion that they were good, and theirs that it wasn't.
I don't think you needed to have such a go. I'd hate it if someone told me how I should act at a gig. We all have expectations when we go to see a live band - to some it will meet them, to some it won't.
There's no need to get so aggressive.
KATIEB_23 24-09-2009, 12:47 What exactly is the purpose of your pointless post Leviathan?...lemme guess.....to wind me up. Ok a prize for big brains coming your way, not......:loopy: d**k!
Angry man! :o
There's no need for that sort of language...
Maybe you should chill out. I've heard that listening to Massive Attack is good for that ;)
boutiquechoc 24-09-2009, 13:38 If you guys remember the last time Leviathan and I swapped 'replies' to our posts (some time last year I think) he got very low, attacked me verbally and tried to insult the life out of me by suggesting he could 'break me mentally', to the point that I reported him and so did a lot of other members, then he suggested we met up as we'd get on???......:loopy:
I remember his wording as I have never heard such stupidity out of one mans mouth (or keyboard) before.
So, as he has already crossed me in the past, I am entitled to and will tell him exactly what I think of his reply to a post I wrote on and he knows that...
As for 'having a go' at the AO's original post. It was not 'having a go;' it was simply stating that 'I' IMO, just as he had his on the matter, stated what I thought of the band and suggested, tongue in cheek, he changed his activities. I also showed no sympathy for him for buying a ticket to a band, also being outstanded that anyone could think that some of Massive Attack's songs as drival, he should've know were like live due to already having their albums.
So, as sticking up for yourself, your opinions and beliefs on here is the norm, it seems 'you' guys are wrong in 'your' opinions on me and my posts!...case closed!
HarrietStar 24-09-2009, 13:40 Massive Attack don't make the sort of music that imo would transfer well to a live gig.. it's more sitting in a dark room chilling with friends sort of music....

I agree but they are also good live, singing and playing their instruments. The old guy who sings Angel is fantastic and so are the female singers.
KATIEB_23 24-09-2009, 14:59 If you guys remember the last time Leviathan and I swapped 'replies' to our posts...
No sorry, I had no idea of this - my comment was based entirely on this thread, where a *seemingly* minor comment was met with a scarily OTT aggressive response!
So, as sticking up for yourself, your opinions and beliefs on here is the norm, it seems 'you' guys are wrong in 'your' opinions on me and my posts!...case closed!
Please don't group me with someone I dont even know. I was not 'ganging up' or being on anyone's side in any way.
If you read back the exchange in an unbiased tone, hopefully you would agree that anyone reading that would think "Ooh, over-reaction alert! Calm Down!" ;)
(I do however apologise for calling you a man ;) :hihi:)
leviathan13 24-09-2009, 15:12 If you guys remember the last time Leviathan and I swapped 'replies' to our posts (some time last year I think) he got very low, attacked me verbally and tried to insult the life out of me by suggesting he could 'break me mentally', to the point that I reported him and so did a lot of other members, then he suggested we met up as we'd get on???......:loopy:

For which I apologised profusely - by starting a thread publicly and openly admitting how stupid I was for doing so as, although I was having a bad day, this was not your fault and I should never have taken it out on you. I served my suspension and the first post I made after this was my apology to you. So, as far as I'm concerned, that is all water under the bridge and I have learned my lesson about being overly aggressive on here.
Which brings me back to my original post on here. As KatieB_23 has said, you must forgive people if they have got the wrong end of the stick because on your post it does look like you're "having a go". Especially with the huge writing at the bottom saying that they can't generalise two songs just because you happen to like them.
If I got it wrong originally, then I'm sorry, but it would appear that a couple of us agree with how you've typed your responses and opinions.
boutiquechoc 24-09-2009, 15:58 ok, no harm caused here or offence intended! I do think still think my post stands though - Massive Attack are VERY good regardless....!

Well I think Akercocke are but non-black metal fans and Christians would probably beg to differ.
Personally, don't know much about M.A. and, to be honest, what I have heard doesn't really do anything for me.
Lil_Rainbow 24-09-2009, 21:40 Dear Massive Attack,

Since you ruined my evening, I feel that a full refund is just and fair. The money will be used to buy knives, and where I live there should be no trouble finding someone who can get all Mr Blonde on my ass. It may seem drastic, but I just can’t take the risk of suffering your music again lest I react like the protagonist in Clockwork Orange when he hears Beethoven’s Ninth.
Yours truly,
Me.
It's lucky I gave you two my guest list places then you ungrateful *uh hum* person.

Which were used by John, not me. Me and a mate had already paid for tickets.

Why didn't you sell your ticket and use the guest list then??? :loopy:

Because our tickets were collected at the box office after being paid for on credit cards.
