Looking to move to Sheffield and am interested in understanding more about the pros and cons of buying/owning a property with a cellar.

It very much depends on the property and it's location as to whether it's really of any use. Some properties ar situated such that they have been able to convert the cellar into a garage, some can be converted into a useful room, most have very low ceilings, and some flood regularly.

our cellar is very damp and is no use really.

remember to get the cellar tested for radon (heehee how geeky of me)

You can put huge quantities of junk down there and forget about it. I haven't yet worked out whether that's a pro or a con.

Or you can get it converted like the one i am sat in now and use it as extra bedroom / office.

We have it properly tanked (see AB Basement Co. in yellow pages) and it looks like any other room, apart from the ceiling is quite low compared with rest of the house. We have window as well for fire escape and light

Our new house has two cellars - both will be tanked, one lined and plastered - as study, other as storage.

We have now had 3 cellars converted, all very sucessful, although one dindt have building regs cos we couldnt get ceiling high enough.
