So, just for a bit of fun I though i'd start a thread on what you think the best, and worst, cover versions are!
or songs that should have been left alone and have been ruined by someone else!
anyone care to start the ball rolling...?

We've done this thread a few times recently.

However, I'm not complaining, as it gives me another chance to post this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRmwSxTiKCA)link, to the greatest cover version ever performed. A lovely version, I'm sure you will all agree:roll:

Track 5 - 26 Mixers for Cash - Aphex Twin

"Heroes, Aphex Twin Remix" – 5:18 – remix of Philip Glass' orchestral version of David Bowie's Heroes, mixed with samples of Bowie's singing from the original.

The best Heroes remix by far!

Smashing Pumpkins did an excellent if pretty traditional cover of "Venus In Furs" in their early days.

Venus In Furs (http://www.thepumpkins.net/mp3/wzrd_89/The_Smashing_Pumpkins_-_Venus_in_Furs_%5BVelvet_Underground%5D_(live_89). mp3)

Sadly not a very clean version of this recording.

I also like these covers of The Cure's A Night Like This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yAef_UsC5Y) and Blondies Dreaming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxT04C9E8Ao) which sounds nothing like the originals.

Thank you Hecate for your above recommendation, it led me to the 'Wicker Park' OST (Never heard of the film), which has some real gems on it.

My favourite cover for raw emotion, is Ryan Adam's cover of Wonderwall.
Also *gets ready to hang his head in shame* I like James Blunt's cover of Fall At Your Feet.

Some are good (or at least fun)... others are disturbing.

Evergrey - "I'm Sorry" (Dilba)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bGp7LCRTlM

Hayseed Dixie - "Ace of Spades" (Motorhead)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xxh492o2aM

Northern Kings - "We Don't Need Another Hero" (Tina Turner)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKwQKqQ8MMY

Most of the Northern Kings covers are... uhhm... Interesting.

Why so negative, Lancashire Jack? Don't you have any cover versions that you like?

Try this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOaGDiPWdB8)

And sort that rose out.

Excellent:

Lucy in the Sky with diamonds - Shatner.

Good:

Fall Out Boy - Beat It

Bad:

Anything Girls Aloud or Atomic Kitten have covered ("Walk This Way", "I think We're alone now" and so on).

If anyone likes rock covers, listen online to Manchester's 106.1 Rock Radio around 4pm. Every day they do a modern cover of a classic or well known song.

McFly should be tortured until hell freezes over for having the bare faced cheek and arrogance to think they were fit to cover Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now".

The Sweet released a single called Poppa Joe in the mid 70s. Not a great song to start with but it was covered on a Top of the Pops album by session singers. It was hilarious because the song changes key upwards several times so that at the end, the poor guy is screeching and hopelessly missing every note. I used to have it but lost the album. I'd give my right ear to hear it again.
