Dont go for a Yamaha, rubbish things. Ive been looking and going for a Squire Telecaster. They vary on the internet from £145 to £190, Soundcontrol sell them at the RRP at £199. Good version of the Fender Original though I'm told by a reliable source.
If not look for the Squire Affinity series.
If not then ebay have the best deals on second hand guitars or buy guitarist magazine.

the decision has been made...without my approval i may add lol

Whats your qualification for saying that? You knew bugger all about guitars the other week.
The truth is with cheap guitars you have no generic answer. I've played some Squier's that were awful and some that were set up so well a pro would of used them. On the same hand we had two Yamahas at college that were great, and i'm sure some are crap.
Epiphones are great, i stand by Epiphones to the end. Take some time to bed in but once there they're lovely. I've had an Epiphone acoustic for 6 years now and it sounds great.

Chris.
Agree with the Epiphones.
I've had an Epi Les Paul for about 5 years and it is a wonderful guitar to play, arguably a more comfortable feel than my Gibson Les Paul! Its neck is slightly thinner than the Gibson and I've recorded loads of songs with it. The Epi is now my back-up guitar and for what it cost (£400? IIRC) it's a great guitar.
As I've said before though, the Gibson is in a class of its own. The pick-ups have more balls than United's Soccer Academy and the electrics (pots and wires) are wonderful. Unfortunately, this is where Epiphones compromise, hence the cheap price. You gets what you pays for and Gibsons are worth every penny.
If you can get an Epiphone, you shouldn't be disappointed but I would recommend maybe installing more powerful pick-ups and to keep an eye on the wiring.
Finally, having played guitar since 1983, a bit of advice: If you keep your guitar in a gig bag, it's like keeping your jewellery in a brown paper bag. Good guitars are kept in solid cases and another thing, they'll last a lot longer in one! Add another £30 to your budget and buy a proper case.
