View Full Version : Derren Brown: How To Be A Psychic Spy
nuttygirl 21-09-2009, 07:29 Any clues on how this will work? I reckon he'll just use standard NLP techniques to suggest an image to us, rather than let us use any 'psychic' powers of our own!
I'll be tuning in on Friday!
It's more suggestion than NLP.
Very similar to the giraffe trick the other day I'd say.

Or perhaps a combination of the two? There is no way, with Derren himself saying that he doesn't believe in psychic ability, that any 'true' psychic powers could be claimed to exist by him.
WhiteHawk 21-09-2009, 18:32 I like Derren Brown but if the first 2 shows of this event series thing are anything to go by then it'll be garbage.
LibertyBell 21-09-2009, 18:51 It's been a good series so far. Looking forward to this one and the final one when he is sticking 5000 pounds on a single roulette number.
WhiteHawk 21-09-2009, 19:02 Its been rubbish. The lottery thing was an hour of my life wasted. His supposed prediction wasn't actually a prediction as he showed it us after the draw and his reveal show never actually revealed anything.
As for the stuck to the sofa one, the other bits of the show were ok (the giraffe thing) but the main experiement was garbage, I refuse to believe that circling some white lines on a TV screen can make you stick to your sofa.
His live shows are great, some of the stuff I've seen him do in them has left me stunned, but this whole events thing really is rubbish.

I agree! I've always had time for Derren but this whole 'events' things is garbage! His mystique and popularity is waning with every single show!

In fact the lottery reveal was the top rated C4 show for that week.

And? I watched it myself!.....But didn't know at the time it was gonna be a load of crap! How would i know? i'm not Derren Brown ya know! :hihi:

I agree too, I've been disappointed so far, it just hasn't felt up to his usual standards. It almost feels like he's trying too hard. In his book I'm sure he says he doesn't believe in NLP, I think it'll be more suggestion and sleight of hand than anything else.
Wouldn't say its a "load of crap" there's PLENTY of other stuff around thats way worse than The Events. I think it's just not entirely living up to the hype.
nuttygirl 23-09-2009, 19:48 I was hooked with the chair-sticking - I wonder if the suggestion will work on me?
Crazystars 24-09-2009, 20:06 For me, Derren Brown has been more or less consistent for the past 4-5 years which equals my span of watching, reading his work. I do believe he has, on occasion, put misdirection even in some explainations of how he does his tricks, but who cares? Its not as if he doesnt make it obvious its all about tricks.
nuttygirl 25-09-2009, 18:47 *getting really excited about 9pm tonight!*
nuttygirl 25-09-2009, 21:03 Bit disappointed - drew lots of triangles... :(
LibertyBell 25-09-2009, 21:21 Bit disappointed - drew lots of triangles... :(
did you read one of the newspapers?
nuttygirl 26-09-2009, 08:37 No - I get all my news online.
I did notice lots of 'hints' towards circles in the entire programme:
1) The woman had her mask taken off and a bright light shone on here - giving her pinprick pupils, hence a concentric pattern in her eyes
2) The 'O' of 'WRITE NOW' was 'drawn' on the screen in a spiral method
3) Derren made lots of 'O' shapes with his arms to the artist - probably influencing her before she drew.
the_rudeboy 26-09-2009, 08:55 Bit disappointed - drew lots of triangles... :(did you read one of the newspapers?
I drew two circles with a cross in them (bit like the view through a telescopic sight) I didn't read any of the papers but was influenced by the girls eyes and also the railings in the shopping centre.
LibertyBell 26-09-2009, 09:03 Thought the show was a bit weak and disjointed. What was the relevance of the light bulb trick or the clicking blind man? (who was amazing - seen him before on something else).
The results of the drawing were impressive and i liked the way he dismissed the "remote viewer" man without using the words "lying charlatan"
Twitcher 26-09-2009, 10:07 Freaked myself out!
Got the message of circles when I looked into the girls very bright round eyes, but thought that too obvious, I also kept getting 'stone columns' with something on the top...never associsted stonehenge in my own mind until later, when it was revealed where she was.....very strange....

Yeah, I honestly can't see where the Stonehenge bit came from, even though I can see where the circles came from.
dieselbabe 26-09-2009, 14:31 Well i thought it was a bridge, my OH says clocks. But it would have been more better if he ask people to text what thought it was befor we saw the other peoples pictures was shown. Has i did notice soon has the circles was said over and over again been the most people drew, more and more people text in saying this too. Would have been good to see what people said before has i belive many would not have said that.

That's rather the point, lots of people watched the lottery thing were justifiably less than impressed and haven't returned.
nuttygirl 26-09-2009, 16:58 Looking foward to the next one - how to beat a casino :)
LibertyBell 26-09-2009, 17:03 Looking foward to the next one - how to beat a casino :)
or how to appear to beat a casino. he's sticking 5 grand on one number! :o
Never worked on me - perhaps you have to pass some "suggestibilty" tests to be involved in it. I'm absolutely sure he couldn't hypnotise me like he did that guy in the cafe. I think is flippin awful anyway, hypnotising someone without asking them first.
WhiteHawk 28-09-2009, 16:54 Was quite decent this show, certainly the best of his "events" so far, although that isn't hard.
The remote view man was rubbish, I like how Derren basically said so aswell :D
That blind man was amazing and that lightbulb trick was good aswell.
I didn't get circles though because I thought it would have been an actual drawing of something, I went for a boat.
I noticed lots of circles in the background, behind where the picture was. Also the railing behind where he was stood contained circles in the ironwork. Watch it again and you'll see.

were they there when the curator was in there too - before she did the painting? guess that would make sence - it worked with all the "giraffe" suggestions the week before.

I'm not sure - from memory he met her by the river, not in the museum, and told her to take the canvas home and do the painting there. Possibly the London Eye was there in the background?
It's on Catch Up TV on Virgin Media if anyone has that and can be bothered to watch it again (I can't). I bet if you do watch again carefully you'll find some reference to Stone Henge too.
His whole act is about making people do what he wants them to do, nothing more nothing less. He made her draw those circles and mention Stone Henge, and he made the people in the museum and at home do the same.
I doubt his newspaper ad had much to do with it, but out of interest did anyone see this? I didn't read a paper on that day.
